Each year, a few days before the celebration of Corpus Christi (feast of Cusco for the resurrection of Christ), every small village or clan send a delegation with colorful dancers and "pabluchas" to pay him homage on the chapel of Lord Qoyllurit'i . An explicit and visible motivation animates the ritual feast of the Lord of Qoyllurit'i. The devotion to Christ and its local image was reflected in a rock close to the Mawayani community; district Ocongate in the province of Quispicanchi. According to belief, the Child Jesus, disguised as a shepherd, appeared to an Indian child, Marianito Mayta and they became friends. When his parents found them dressed in rich ornaments they informed the local priest, Pedro de Landa, who attempted to capture him without success. In the place of the Child, appeared a stone, Marianito died immediately and the image of Lord of Qoyllurit'i kept fixed on the rock. However, if we investigate more deeply, we discover an ancient religious custom which is only practiced by the inhabitants of the Andes; the ritual is associated with fertility of the land and the worship of the Apus (Mountains Foster), a ritual that venerates the integration of man and nature. The main ceremony is held at the foot of Nevado or Apu. In fact, this festival is one of the three great religious-peasant pilgrimages that survived from pre-Hispanic times and continues to mobilize the people of the Southern Andes (along with the CUSCO LAMBAYEQUE Email: [email protected] Av. PILGRIMAGE TO THE LORD OF QOYLLURIT’I The ritual consists in a pilgrimage of shepherds, traders and onlookers gathered at the shrine in the town of Sinaq'ara Mawayany, at 4600 meters above sea level. The pilgrimage to the shrine of Lord of Qoyllurit'i takes place every year between May and June but the date is not exact due to the variability of the Christian and Andean calendar. All "nations" near the Mount Ausangate sent its "gift" or delegation of dancers and musicians to dance to the Christ of the Snows and the Sacred Mountain, thus thanking and asking for good crops, livestock protection, welfare and health. Today, the celebration is held just before the celebration of Corpus Christi, on the day of the Holy Trinity. It attracts thousands of pilgrims and visitors who maintain and renew the tradition, faith and worship to the Lord of Qoyllurit'i, and the Sacred Apu Sinaq'ara. They go up to the limit of perpetual snow, followed by native people dancing and the inevitable ukukos (spectacled bear), magical beings that make the connection between men and the spirit of the mountain. This character is equally responsible for transporting a symbolic piece of ice of the mountain which will serve to renew the rivers and waters in his community or nation. There is also a procession, fireworks and we will find the symbolic market of Alacitas (miniature craft fair) on the path. CUSCO LAMBAYEQUE Email: [email protected] Av. Manco Cápac 515 – Wanchaq Ca.
