Libor Čech Abstrakt Prezentovaná diserta ční práce zkoumá povahu a význam kultury mu čednictví (farhang-e šahádat ) v sou časné íránské spole čnosti se zvláštním d ůrazem na delimitaci nábožensko-politické dimenze tohoto fenoménu a ur čení p říčin a d ůsledk ů pom ěrn ě nedávné reinterpretace, která tuto kulturu radikáln ě posunula ze sféry nábožensko-spirituální do politicko-ideologické až revolu ční. Práce zachycuje na jedné stran ě komplexní pohled na mechanismy a zp ůsoby využívání karbalského paradigmatu – jako prost ředku pro formulaci politicky (i jinak) motivovaných cíl ů – různými spektry mocenské struktury vládnoucího establishmentu i r ůznorodými opozi čními sociálními hnutími a na druhé stran ě reflektuje jeho apolitický rozm ěr asociovaný s duchovním prožitkem věř ících, který vychází z tradi ční lidové religiozity. Tyto aspekty politického a náboženského rozhraní kultury mu čednictví jsou podrobn ě zkoumány a zasazovány do kontextu sou časné íránské sociokulturní reality. Práce se též snaží p ředložit pádné argumenty založené na premise, která kulturu mu čednictví vyty čuje jako esenciální zdroj při konstruování identit a utvrzování solidarity mezi íránskými imámovskými ší city, a to na základ ě sdílené kolektivní pam ěti a kolektivního traumatu vycházejícího z potupných reminiscencí na události fatálního karbalského masakru, k němuž došlo10. mu ḥarramu 61 AH. Klí čová slova Kultura mu čednictví, karbalské paradigma, ší citský imámovský islám, sebeob ětování, džihád Abstract The presented doctoral thesis examines character and significance of the culture of martyrdom (farhang-e shahadat ) in contemporary Iranian society with a particular emphasis on delimitation religious-political dimension of this phenomenon and determination of causes and implications of relatively recent reinterpretation which has radically shifted this culture from the religious-spiritual sphere to the political-ideological and even revolutionary. On the one hand, the thesis deals with a complex view of mechanism and manners of the utilization of the Karbala paradigm as the instrument for formulation of politically (and otherwise) motivated aims by different spectres of power structures of the ruling establishment and diverse oppositional social movements and on the other hand it reflects its apolitical standpoint associated with a spiritual experience of believers, which proceeds from the popular religion. These aspects of the political and religious boundary of the culture of martyrdom are examined in detail and given in the context of current socio-political reality. The thesis also strives for presenting of arguments founded on the premise which defines the culture of martyrdom as an essential source for constructing of identities and strengthening of solidarity among Iranian Imami Shi’ites, namely on the basis of the collective memory and collective trauma stemming from reminiscences of the event of fatal Karbala massacre which happened on the tenth of Muharram 61 AH.     IDENTITY AND LEGITIMACY: IRAN’S NUCLEAR AMBITIONS FROM NON- TRADITIONAL PERSPECTIVES Pupak Mohebali Doctor of Philosophy University of York Politics June 2017 Abstract This thesis examines the impact of Iranian elites’ conceptions of national identity on decisions affecting Iran's nuclear programme and the P5+1 nuclear negotiations. “Why has the development of an indigenous nuclear fuel cycle been portrayed as a unifying symbol of national identity in Iran, especially since 2002 following the revelation of clandestine nuclear activities”? This is the key research question that explores the Iranian political elites’ perspectives on nuclear policy actions. My main empirical data is elite interviews. Another valuable source of empirical data is a discourse analysis of Iranian leaders’ statements on various aspects of the nuclear programme. The major focus of the thesis is how the discourses of Iranian national identity have been influential in nuclear decision-making among the national elites. In this thesis, I examine Iranian national identity components, including Persian nationalism, Shia Islamic identity, Islamic Revolutionary ideology, and modernity and technological advancement. Traditional rationalist IR approaches, such as realism fail to explain how effective national identity is in the context of foreign policy decision-making. I thus discuss the connection between national identity, prestige and bargaining leverage using a social constructivist approach. According to constructivism, states’ cultures and identities are not established realities, but the outcomes of historical and social processes. The Iranian nuclear programme has a symbolic nature that mingles with socially constructed values. There is the need to look at Iran’s nuclear intentions not necessarily through the lens of a nuclear weapons programme, but rather through the regime’s overall nuclear aspirations.

I’m most grateful to the LAMOTH for inviting me and I am most grateful to you for attending this event. Our topic today is Holocaust denial in Iran. This topic is disputed. Two weeks ago, according to the “New York Times”, the new foreign minister of Iran, Mohammad Javad Zarif wished a ,Happy Rosh Hashana’ on his English- language Twitter account to Christine Pelosi, the daughter of Representative Nancy Pelosi of California. Christine responded: “Thanks. The New Year would be even sweeter if you would end Iran’s Holocaust denial, sir.” To which Mr. Zarif responded: “Iran never denied it. The man who was perceived to be denying it is now gone. Happy New Year.”1 Wonderful message, isn’t it? Obviously, the theme of this very event has vanished into thin air. Or perhaps not. Let us take a closer look at Mr. Zarif words. He claims: Iran never denied the Holocaust. This denial of the denial, however, is utterly misleading. During the last eight years, Iran was the first and only country in the world to make Holocaust denial a matter of official foreign policy – within the United Nations, on the Internet and elsewhere. Mr. Zarif’s second claim: “The man who was perceived to be denying it is now gone” is partly true since Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is fortunately no longer president.

This makes the questions this book asks all the more salient: what is the place of illegal substances in the politics of modern Iran? How have drugs affected the formation of the Iranian state and its power dynamics? And how have governmental attempts at controlling and regulating illicit drugs affected drug consumption and addiction? By answering these questions, Maziyar Ghiabi suggests that the Islamic Republic’s image as an inherently conservative state is not only misplaced and inaccurate, but in part a myth. In order to dispel this myth, he skilfully combines ethnographic narratives from drug users, vivid field observations from ‘under the bridge’, with archival material from the pre- and post-revolutionary era, statistics on drug arrests and interviews with public officials.     Why Iran’s Islamic Government is Unraveling By Jamsheed K. Choksy n june 12, 2009, the day of the islamic republic of iran’s tenth presidential elections since the 1979 revolution, it seemed for many in Iran and around the world that democracy had finally tri- umphed over theocracy. By apparently voting to oust President Mah- moud Ahmadinejad—the incumbent who had the backing of clerical Ohardliners in the regime, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei—the Iranian peo- ple demonstrated that the theocratic regime had lost its tyrannical grip on their as- pirations. Yet the mullahs and their allies in the government bureaucracy had other plans. To prevent the most important popularly-elected political office in Iran from slipping beyond their control, the regime decided to engineer what Khamenei infa- mously described as an “electoral miracle.” So, after a hard-fought election with the largest turnout of voters in Iranian history, Ahmadinejad was allegedly re-elected to a second term. As people flooded into the streets to protest the fraud, the theocratic regime un- leashed the Basij paramilitary forces to suppress them. Bearing the brunt of the re- pression was the Green Movement, a broad-based, loosely-knit grassroots movement that coalesced around a diverse group of dissident clerical and secular politicians like Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Seyyed Mohammad Khatami, Seyyed Meh - di Karroubi, and Mir Hossein Mousavi. As the Iranian regime regained control of the streets, it appeared at first that the mullahs had prevailed. But it soon became clear how narrow the Islamic Republic’s victory over the Iranian people actually was, and how brittle the regime had become in the process.
