Location

Seville is the artistic, cultural, and financial capital of southern Spain, irrigated by the river Guadalquivir. It is the capital of and of the province of Sevilla and ranks as the fourth- largest metropolitan area of Spain. The city sits well inland, but a mere 6 meters above sea level.

Andalucia was occupied by for about 800 years but was a cultural center long before. The fertility of the land and its climate with mild winters and about 3000 hours of sun per year (in August temperatures can reach 47°C) made Phoenicians and Carthaginians settle here. Later came the Romans, and two of its emperors, Trajan and Hadrian, in fact were born here. Seville was long an important sea port, prior to the silting up of the Guadalquivir. Today the city is an important conference and business centre for southern Spain.
