Anders, the S-2 (intelligence) officer, for the 57th Infantry is now deceased. He distinguished himself during the defense of Bataan by frequently infiltrating behind Japanese lines collecting intelligence. For his courage, he received a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. Surviving combat and POW incarceration, he wrote “Bataan: An Incident” in 1946 while recovering from injuries that would lead to his retirement shortly thereafter. His family connection to the Philippines stretched over two generations, as Anders’ father served in Manila during the Spanish American War, receiving a Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award for valor in combat. In 1961 father and son visited the Philippines together to retrace the paths each had taken in his own war. Because of its length, the Anders article will be serialized over two issues. It also is being published in the current issue of the Bulletin of the American Historical Collection, Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. Editor by Lt. Col. Frank O. The photos depicted images of U.S. soldiers engaged in torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment.! Among other things, the photos documented the sexual abuse and humiliation of Iraqi detainees in the prison.' The photographs depict naked detainees, some of whom were forced to engage in sex acts or simulated sex acts.3 Sworn statements of the detainees at Abu Ghraib reveal a pattern of abuse and degradation, including "details of how they were sexually humiliated and assaulted, threatened with rape, t. • 1 Does the Law Work? Global Exploitation and Willful Ignorance of International Tribunals/Courts and Their Lack of Effectiveness
Does the Law Work? Global Exploitation and Willful Ignorance of International Tribunals/Courts and Their Lack of Effectiveness in Adjudicating Justice and Reconciliation in International Criminal Law Justine Taylor Robinson Haverford College Political Science Department Thesis Advisor: Professor Thomas Donahue Senior Thesis April 21, 2017 1 Abstract: This thesis examines how the international criminal law system (ICLS) has so far failed to be an effective and impartial deterrent to those nation-states/governments who enact some of the most grievous crimes imaginable: genocide and torture. These crimes are displayed in two case studies to show the failure of the ICLS in stopping these violations of human rights and ethics. Moreover, the target perpetrator in these case studies will be the United States government, and how they both failed and abused their status as a powerful nation state to disregard and/or violated international criminal law in Rwanda and Iraq (Abu Ghraib Prison). Two major reforms are proposed in this thesis. First, the creation of a mobile tribunal/court system that would go to any nation state or victimized group that has submitted a report of ICLS violations, along with a security unit that would be dispatched to keep the peace and aid to the local people. Second, to make sure that reconciliation and justice are achieved at all cost, and employing human rights experts to “keep the peace” and send status reports to the central command of the tribunal/court system. These are solutions to help imagine the most efficient system of international criminal law, grant justice to those who need it most and to punish those who have purposefully ignored or violated the principles/laws of the ICLS.

  • 2014 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Message Overseas
My warmest greetings to the organizers, partners, nominees, and recipients of the Year 2014 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Message Overseas. The Philippines now enjoys its rightful place in the global community due to our determination to seize all opportunities for growth, uplift lives, and help restore the Filipino’s distinction in this highly competitive climate. It has been four years since we began to transverse the straight and righteous path, and we have come far: Change has indeed set in. We have regained our people’s confidence in our bureaucracy and institutions; we have endeavored to establish the necessary reforms to empower our citizenry; and we have transformed our country from the “Sick Man of Asia” into one of the top performing economies in the world. We have achieved all these because of our solidarity towards equitable progress, ensuring that, as we move forward, no man is left behind. This is why we in government promote volunteerism and social corporate responsibility: To cascade the benefits of our socio-economic programs to the grassroots level and enable more of our countrymen, especially the poor, to lead dignified lives. I join the Commission on Filipinos Overseas as you hold this search to pay tribute to Filipino individuals and organizations that have contributed greatly to Philippine development initiatives and have served the interests of Filipino communities overseas. I congratulate your BENIGNO S. AQUINO III Lingkod sa Kapwa Pilipino, Kaanib ng Bayan, Banaag, The President of the Philippines and Pamana ng Pilipino Awardees as well, for your efforts to better the conditions of our kababayans here in the Philippines and abroad, and represent the Filipino MANILA talent and industry in your adoptive homelands.
