Abstract of Thesis submitted to Universidade Federal de Pernambuco as a partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.). THE ROLE OF INFORMATION IN TRANSIT USE BY UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS IN BRAZIL AND DENMARK Mayara Moraes Monteiro Advisor: Prof. Leonardo Herszon Meira, PhD. Co-advisor: Prof. Otto Anker Nielsen, PhD. With the fast improvement of technology, accompanied by changes in the lifestyle and the growth of cities, that made the Public Transport (PT) system more complex, delivery of integrated information on PT systems in an efficient and clear way are of the outmost importance but not always available. This study sought to understand the relation between travel information, PT use intentions and non-habitual travel (at night). The hypothesis is that PT use intentions are related to the perceived usefulness and the ease-of-use of the system, which are related to information quality and real-time information availability. The hypothesized relations are anchored theoretically in the Extended Technology Acceptance Model and validated empirically in two sources of data: (i) Copenhagen (Denmark), characterized by a highly integrated PT system with an advanced web-based information system; (ii) Recife and Natal (Brazil), characterized by a lower perceived Level Of Service (LOS) and non-integrated information sources. The data was collected through a tailor-made survey answered for 1,123 university students in Denmark and Brazil. Structural equation models were employed for explaining the use of PT as a function of the observed respondent characteristics and the latent constructs. The results show: (i) information quality is essential for explaining PT use; (ii) perceived information quality is directly and positively related to perceived LOS, convenience and familiarity with the PT system; (iii) the use of real-time information is positively related to information quality and familiarity, while it is negatively associated with perceived PT security; (iv) PT use at night is positively related to habitual PT use and information search. Key words: information systems; public transport; technology acceptance model; structural equation models; mode choice. O PAPEL DA INFORMAÇÃO NO TRANSPORTE PÚBLICO POR ESTUDANTES DE GRADUAÇÃO E PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO NO BRASIL E NA DINAMARCA Mayara Moraes Monteiro Orientador: Prof. Leonardo Herszon Meira, PhD. Co-orientador: Prof. Otto Anker Nielsen, PhD. The genus Crelloxea was originally defined as "Crellidae with dermal and interstitial acanthoxeas and acanthostrongyles, with skeletal oxea and without microscleres or echinators" (Hechtel, 1983). Crelloxea was allocated in the marine sponge family Crellidae (Order Poecilosclerida), which is characterized by a tangential crust of spined ectosomal spicules (oxeas, anisoxeas or styles), a choanosomal plumose skeleton of smooth tornotes, sometimes a basal skeleton of acanthostyles erect on the substrate, microscleres usually arcuate chelae or absent, and surface with areolated pore fields (van Soest, 2002).

V. (Meylekh) Viswanath Lubin School of Business Pace University [email protected] The first New World Jewish settlement was in Recife, then a relatively small city in northeastern Brazil. Portuguese New Christians migrated there in the sixteenth century in search of a freer environment in which to continue practicing the Jewish faith. However, it was not until 1630, when the Dutch conquered the region, that Jews were able to openly observe their religion. With the Portuguese reconquest in 1654, this brief chapter ended. Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe and Germany arrived at the beginning of the twentieth century and flourished for several decades. Assimilation and intermarriage, however, diminished Jewish practices and identity before a revival flourished during the last twenty-five years, which has seen both cultural and religious institutions rebuilt. Still, the long-term viability of this community, far from others in Brazil, is not guaranteed. What follows is an account of the long history of Recife Jewry. Keywords: Jews, Recife, Brazil, synagogues, Ashkenazi, Sephardim, Dutch period Introduction More than five hundred years have passed since the first Jews set foot in the New World, not in New Amsterdam, but on the northeastern coast of South America.

ISSN 2238-1031 Measuring accessibility: effects of implementing multiple trip generating developments Jessica Helena de Lima+; Maurício Oliveira de Andrade; Maria Leonor Alves Maia Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, UFPE, Recife, Brazil Article Info Abstract Keywords: The urban environment can be strongly affected by the increased number of displacements that emerge trip generating development from a trip generating development hub, and so a measuring tool is needed for these variations, indicating accessibility where they occurred with a greater intensity. This can guide the government when investing in local indicator transport. This paper proposes location quality indicators and uses them to measure the impact of the Suape's Industrial and Port new Industrial Port Complex of Suape in Pernambuco, which is considered to be trip generator territory. Complex Data from the 1997 OD survey, prior to the existence of the complex, has been used in comparison with number of displacements the 2010 Census, once the industries were in place. Clearly the complex installation brought great changes, not only to its immediate location, but also for the entire metropolis. Displacements towards this area have greatly intensified in number and average travel time. The accessibility index for the locals has Submitted 13 Apr 2015; received in revised form 7 Aug 2015; greatly improved, and their per capita income shows its greatest variation between the years 2000 and accepted 31 Aug 2015. 2010, suggesting that local workers have been absorbed by the industry, comprising an important step towards sustainable development and social inclusion. Dec. 2014, Volume 2, No. 2 (Serial No. 3), pp. 72-84 Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, ISSN 2328-2142, USA D DAVID PUBLISHING Competitive Aspects in the Metropolitan Region of Recife Bidding Terms for the Delegation of Its Urban Bus System Fernando Oliveira Rolim1, Enilson Medeiros dos Santos2 and Leonardo Herszon Meira3 1. Procurement Audit Division, Pernambuco State Court of Accounts, Recife 52.060-450, Brazil 2. Civil Engineering Department, Rio Grande do Norte Federal University, Natal 59.015-120, Brazil 3. Civil Engineering Department, Pernambuco Federal University, Recife 52.070-000, Brazil Abstract: This paper discusses aspects related to competitiveness in the ITB (invitation to bid) of the public tender for the concession of the urban bus public transport services in the RMR (Metropolitan Region of Recife) in the Brazilian northeastern region. The bid was made public through a consortium formed by the two major cities of the RMR—Recife and Olinda, and the government of the State of Pernambuco. Throughout the paper, the basic features of the bidding terms are presented and some aspects of these characteristics that undermine competitiveness are pointed out and submitted to criticisms. Aspects such as the small number of lots, the lack of diversification of lot sizes and the possibility of forming consortia with unlimited number of participants were targeted. In order to prove the criticisms stated, a simulation of an arrangement amongst incumbents is presented, based on the rules of the tender, in which the allocation of incumbents ex post bidding does not differ from the ex ante scenario. Thus, the main objective of this article is to assess whether good practices that foster competition were followed by the ITB and the main conclusion is that competitiveness was put in jeopardy.
