I don't agree Rob Zombie Presents: Volume 1: The Haunted World of El Superbeasto all the reviews of this movie, I didn't think it was bad and I didn't think it was side-splittingly funny. I enjoyed lots of the jokes some I found really funny, others made me smirk and some not as funny but with the sheer amount of gags in this film your bound to not find all of em funny. I mainly enjoyed the film because I thought it was good, i enjoyed the action, the jokes, the animation and story despite it not being very linear and rather silly and I thought the voice acting was very professional. I do agree with many of people saying that this film isn't for everybody it is gory, full of nudity and swearing but I didn't in anyway find it offensive although I can see how some people might. Overall I think this was a good effort by Rob Zombie and while it wasn't on par with some of his other movies like House Of Corpses it was still a very good film. My recommendation for people wondering whether or not to see this film is to check out the first 10 minutes if it hasn't appealed to you by then, then it's not your sort of movie but if it seems promising check it out because it'll be really worth Rob Zombie Presents: Volume 1: The Haunted World of El Superbeasto while. • Masquerades of Self-Erasure: Pornography and Corporeal Memory in Liliana Cavani’S the Night Porter
MASQUERADES OF SELF-ERASURE: PORNOGRAPHY AND CORPOREAL MEMORY IN LILIANA CAVANI’S THE NIGHT PORTER by GRAEME KRAUTHEIM Hons. Bachelor of Arts, University of Alberta, 2007 A THESIS IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Film Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) July, 2009 © Graeme Krautheim, 2009 ABSTRACT In this thesis, I am utilizing Liliana Cavani’s controversial 1974 film The Night Porter to acknowledge the significance of pornography in historical representation and memory work as related to the Holocaust. I will discuss the importance of representations rooted in the corporeal and relegated to the obscene and argue that the term pornography is used in academic, political and popular circumstances to attack texts that disrupt or threaten a dominant, pre-existing understanding of the world. Having been largely misunderstood for the last three decades (and criticized by major scholars, including Michel Foucault, Susan Sontag and Primo Levi), Ii Night Porter uses the languages of pornography and masochism to initiate a forceful historical dialogue that calls for a re-evaluation of the criteria used to gage and evaluate the past. The Night Porter argues that culture consoles itself in simplistic, “moral” readings of history. It subsequently attacks the concept of post-Holocaust redemption and issues related to the reassurances of redemptive logic with which culture has long kept itself warm. I propose pornography to be disruptive when placed alongside historical representation because it gestures to historical dialogues that dominant discourses are fearful of having. The film is complicated further by the fact that it was marketed, not as contemplative art cinema, but as kinky pornography by its American distributor.

WHERE I AM, THERE (SH)IT WILL BE: QUEER PRESENCE IN POST MODERN HORROR FILMS by MELANIE MCDOUGALD Under the Direction of Margaret Mills Harper ABSTRACT This paper will consider the function of queer space and presence in the post modern horror film genre. Beginning with George Romero‟s 1968 film Night of the Living Dead and continuing through to contemporary examples of the genre, the paper posits the function of the queer monster or monstrous as integral to and representative of the genre as a whole. The paper analyzes both the current theory and scholarship of the genre and through Lacanian psychoanalytic theory and queer theory offers a theory of how these theories can add to existing theory

  • Selling the Splat Pack: the Dvd Revolution and the American Horror Film
SELLING THE SPLAT PACK: THE DVD REVOLUTION AND THE AMERICAN HORROR FILM Mark Bernard A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2010 Committee: Dr. Cynthia Baron, Advisor Dr. Scott A. Magelssen Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Paul McDonald Dr. Maisha Wester ii ABSTRACT Dr. Cynthia Baron, Advisor In 2006, journalists began writing about the emergence of a group of young filmmakers who specialized in horror films featuring torture and graphic violence. Because of their gory and bloody movies, these directors came to be known as “the Splat Pack,” and they were depicted by the press as subversive outsiders rebelling against the Hollywood machine. However, what many discussions of the Splat Pack ignore is how the success of this group of directors was brought about and enabled by the industrial structure of Hollywood at the middle of the first decade of the twenty-first century. Drawing from political economy methodology, this study seeks to understand and illuminate the industrial changes and realignments that gave rise to the Splat Pack, first by looking at how industrial changes have affected the content of horror films of the past, and secondly by examining how the advent of DVD technology made way for the gory, “Unrated” films of the Splat Pack. DVD played a major role in the rise of the Splat Pack by changing the way horror films were presented to their potential audiences and by leading to an industry acceptance of “Unrated” films. With this in mind, this study then turns to an analysis of several key films directed by the Splat Pack and uses the commodity form of the DVD as a lens through which to interpret these films.

A major change occurs in the 1960s when humans become the monster, reflecting the violence and social upheaval in the United States during that decade. As America continues to change in the coming decades, the human monster undergoes multiple transformations.
