Full details of additional Air-Britain books and more detailed descriptions are shown online AUSTER – the Company and the Aircraft Tom Wenham, Rod Simpson & Malcolm Fillmore NEW Auster Aircraft has a long and distinguished history, starting with its formation as British Taylorcraft in 1938 and end - ing with its absorption into Beagle Aircraft in 1960.The Auster was not, strictly, a new design since it had its origins in the American Taylorcraft two seater. However, World War II gave it a welcome momentum which led to more than 1,600 artillery spotter Austers being built for the British and other air forces. The Rearsby factory was at maximum production during the war - but, as with all other aircraft manufacturing plants, it found a sudden collapse in military orders when peace came. However, there were returning flyers keen to keep their skills alive and the Autocrat and its successors were successful, not only in the UK but also across the world. Using the same basic airframe, the Auster constantly changed its shape and the 180hp Husky of 1960 was a very different animal from the original 55hp Taylorcraft Model C. Austers were sold all over the world and were used for many tasks including crop spraying, aerial advertising and joyriding. The company also developed new models including the very successful AOP.9, and the less successful Agricola, Atlantic and Avis.

The entries in this guide are arranged by company name and include a history of each company, particularly its formation and that of subsidiaries together with mergers and take-overs. Brief details of the records, the relevant accession numbers and any limitations on access are given. Where the records have been listed this is indicated. A glossary of terms specific to the subject area is also included, together with an index. Background to the Collection The Museum's archive department began collecting records in the late 1960s and targeted a number of firms. Although many of the deposits were arranged through formal approaches by the Museum to companies, a significant number were offered by company staff: a significant example is the Supermarine archive (AC 70/4) including some 50,000 drawings, which would have been burnt had an employee not contacted the Museum. The collections seem to offer a bias towards certain types of record, notably drawings and production records, rather than financial records and board minutes.

The Collection Percival Aircraft Ltd's bid for the post-war medium range transport field was the attractive Percival Prince series, powered by Alvis Leonides 9 cylinder radial engines. It was of all metal stressed skin construction with fabric-covered control surfaces, designed for passenger appeal. The high wing gave good views and the roomy fuselage and retractable tricycle undercarriage provided a low level floor for ease of entry. A total of 31 Princes and the improved President models were built at Percival's Luton Airport works before production ceased to allow construction of large RAF orders for the military development, the Pembroke. In April 1954 Percival Aircraft Ltd, originally founded by Australian Edgar W. Percival, was taken over by the Hunting group and renamed Hunting Percival Aircraft Ltd, three years later changing to Hunting Aircraft Ltd. The story of the Percival Prince in Australia goes back to 1951, when three Prince C Mk.1 transports (equivalent to civil model Series 3C) were ordered by the Australian Government. They were to support the Long Range Weapons Establishment at the Woomera Rocket Range in the north of South Australia, as well as British atomic test grounds in remote desert areas of the state. Under contract No.6/Acft/6705/CB.10(d), the Australian specification was for 550hp Alvis Leonides 502/4 engines, solid nose without transparent panels, 8 removable passenger seats or cargo cabin, special fuselage side windows for oblique photography and fittings to allow its use for patients on stretchers.

    Daniel Guggenheim Medal MEDALIST FOR 1959 For a lifetime devoted to the design of military and commercial aircraft, culminating in the successful introduction into worldwide commercial service of the first turbine- powered propeller-driven aircraft. SIR GEORGE EDWARDS Destined to become one of the world’s foremost aircraft designers and administrators, and to be knighted in 1957, George Robert Edwards was born July 9, 1908, in Highams Park, Essex, England. He received his technical education from the South West Essex Technical College and London University, and in 1935 joined the design staff of Vickers-Armstrongs, a leading aircraft manufacturing concern. At the outbreak of World War II he became Experimental Manager at Vickers, and the projects of which he was in charge included some of the first British pressurized aircraft. In 1945 he was appointed Chief Designer, with responsibility for Britain’s first post-war transport, the Viking. More than 160 Vikings were built, and production of the Valetta and Varsity military version brought production of Vickers’s piston-engined transports to a total of 585. Even as the Viking was coming into service, Edwards was talking of it as the “last of the piston-engined line.” He was sure, while many others were still lukewarm, that a turbine- powered transport must be the next move in civil aviation. Under his direction Vickers built for the Ministry of Supply a special Viking powered by two Rolls-Royce Nene jets. In July 1948 this aircraft, the first jet transport to be built anywhere, flew to Paris in 34 minutes and seven seconds, at 385 miles per hour.
