  • THEOLOGIZING in the PHILIPPINES Insect REPORT ESTELA P
THEOLOGIZING IN THE PHILIPPINES INSeCT REPORT ESTELA P. PADILLA, Ph.D. Part 1: INTRODUCTORY NOTES 1. BASIC FACTS and GENERAL HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Religiosity and spirituality play a very important role in the life of a Filipino and in the Filipino nation as a whole. Religion is not just a faith tradition with customs, rituals and practices, but an energy and an integrating element that makes the Filipino survive and thrive and work together to surmount social and political challenges 1. At present, 81% of Filipinos belong to the Catholic religion. With a population of 88 million, that would be more than 60 million Catholics 2. Only two countries in Asia are predominantly Catholic (the other is East Timor with reputedly 96% of its population Catholic); the rest of Asia would have 1-3% Catholics among their population. The Philippines was colonized by Spain in the 16th century and evangelization into the Catholic faith was the consequence of this colonization 3. Islam was in the Philippines (14 th century) before the Spaniards came and some important cities and places already converted to Islam. However, long before the Moslems and Catholic Spain arrived, (precolonial) Filipinos practice indigenous religious traditions collectively called ‘animism’ 4 which persisted (even as a form of resistance) all through colonial times and continue to influence the modern Filipinos’ hearts and minds. 5 1 Filipinos are the top charity givers in Asia and Africa. This is the result of the latest MasterCard Survey on Ethical Spending conducted from September 13 to November 11, 2010, involving 10,502 consumers in 24 countries in Asia and Africa ( Inquirer Global Nation , 19 Feb.

For anyone who loves Apostolic revival and its history, Spirit and Schism by Dr. Johnny King, is a must read. Profoundly researched and exceed- ingly well written, the exciting story of the great Philippine Revival has finally been told. ~Larry L. Booker I had tears in my eyes after reading the thesis. Dr. King has refocused the attention of history to the local Filipino people which has been less talked about or even neglected in other academic works of this na- ture. From the position of this thesis, you can sense the heart Dr. King has for the Filipino people. It is rare and special when a non-Filipino would desire to write a history about the Filipinos from the perspec- tive of a Filipino. ~Yuri Sangueza Dr. Johnny King is a man with something to say. Coming from a world of obscurity and low expectations, he encountered the living Christ and nothing was ever the same. He has risen to become a truly authentic world-class leader. He has positively impacted hundreds of thousands of people around the world. He is a leader, a preacher, a scholar, and a statesman. He is, in a word, what one would define as a man of God. Beyond that, there is nothing higher that can be said of a man. Enjoy his astute scholarship and research in this deeply interesting work. ~Nathaniel J. Wilson Ed.D Mission is at the heart of Pentecostalism. From its inception at Pentecost and subsequent outpourings throughout history, mission has been and remains the normative response of the empowered community of believers.
