Changing Lives 2013-2014 Annual Report www.hathaway-sycamores.org Michael Galper William P. Martone Dear Friends

For more than 112 years, Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services has been dedicated to nurturing hope, healing, and the opportunity to thrive for children, teens, young adults, and families facing serious life challenges. Over the past year, our 650 highly skilled and deeply compassionate staff members continued that commitment. Known for forging best practices, Hathaway-Sycamores is a leader in the mental health and child-welfare arenas, a fact that was further solidified when we recently received a prestigious Awards for Performance Excellence (CAPE) ™ Eureka Award. Hathaway-Sycamores’ greatest strength, however, is our ability to fundamentally transform lives. One proud example of how we change lives is through our Foster Family and Adoption Agency. With more than 19,000 children and teens in County’s foster-care system, there has never been a more crucial need for foster parents and forever homes. Hathaway-Sycamores is working diligently to meet these needs. We also are working collaboratively, as evidenced by a special event we spearheaded this past June. In partnership with the Department of Children and Family Services and the Department of Mental Health, we brought together 11 other agencies for a first-of-its-kind forum designed to increase public awareness regarding the thousands of kids who urgently need temporary or permanent, loving homes. As a result of our Foster Family and Adoption Agency’s determined efforts, we have seen – firsthand – how profoundly youngsters’ lives can be changed when they leave foster care for the permanency of forever homes. Two shining illustrations of this are the Gutierrez Family as well as Shoshana and Violet. We invite you to visit our website (www.hathaway-sycamores. org) and view a video that shares these two moving, life-affirming foster-adoption stories. These life-affirming stories are a tribute to you – our generous and caring supporters – as well as to our dedicated staff and board of directors. Your impact is immeasurable, as is our gratitude.

You Serve Foster children are our most vulnerable Californians. We know that when students in foster care receive the right support from a committed group of caring educators and adults, they achieve academically. Without this support, they are more likely than low-income and other disadvantaged students to fail in school and drop out. But organizing resources to support foster students in school is only one part—albeit an important part—of what it takes to launch a child into a rewarding and productive life. Other ingredients are love and acceptance, family structure, and a safe haven. As foster and adoptive parents, these are the miracles you can make in the life of a child.

Senator Carol Liu California State SenateYou Strengthen Over the years, Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services has partnered with the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) by caring for our foster youth and helping them to safely reunify with their families. DCFS values Hathaway-Sycamores’ ongoing efforts to engage with us in a process to provide quality improvement for children in their care. Hathaway-Sycamores also provides intensive residential and community treatment to some of our older youth with the greatest challenges. Through the Residential Based Services (RBS) program, Hathaway-Sycamores provides an array of services with a team of professionals working closely with the child and family. We are fortunate that Hathaway-Sycamores is one of just a few RBS providers county-wide; this service helps some of our neediest children transition out of group care to a home setting and helps the family access other local services, adding to the child and family’s stability. We have benefitted from Hathaway-Sycamores’ 24-hour crisis intervention and 14-day “crisis bed” program, which helps youth who need extra care for a short time. Hathaway-Sycamores’ You Strengthenspirit of collaboration is an integral part of successful treatment planning. Philip L. Brad and Todd Freer

Personal tragedy propels this board member

Brad Freer joined Hathaway-Sycamores’ Board of Directors in 2009. His familiarity with mental health issues and its often tragic consequences, however, has much deeper and far more personal roots.

After struggling for years with severe mental health challenges – Brad’s brother, Todd – took his own life. Not surprisingly, this tragedy fundamentally impacted the Freer family. Brad’s mother and father, for example, felt compelled to reach out to others with mentally ill children and teach classes designed to help parents better navigate their way through such a difficult life event. Brad, along with his high-school-sweetheart wife Lisa, felt similarly compelled to make a positive difference in relation to those suffering from – as well as those affected by – mental illness. Brad, who grew up in La Cañada Flintridge, was especially concerned about those who lack access to mental health resources and other support services. Moreover, even though the Freers had such access, the difficulty in navigating the complex system meant they were unable to prevent Todd’s death or mitigate its devastating toll on the family. Serendipity then stepped in to steer Brad and Lisa toward Hathaway-Sycamores. Brad, who currently serves as a senior vice president and director of research for Capital World Investors (a division of the Capital Group), had been living – accompanied by Lisa and the couple’s three children – in Asia for 12 years. In 2008, the family moved back to La Cañada Flintridge. Hathaway-Sycamores’ Board member David Battaglia happened to be the Freers’ next-door neighbor. David introduced Brad and Lisa to Hathaway-Sycamores through our annual “Shot-at-a-Million” Golf Classic, and they were quickly sold on its many merits. The following year, Brad was appointed to our Board. Since then, Brad has developed a deep appreciation for our agency’s broad spectrum of programs, commitment to innovation, and the personal relationships that we forge with the children and families we serve. For our part, Hathaway-Sycamores has developed a deep appreciation for the Freers’ passion to help others.
