Watching Television with Friends: Tween Girls' Inclusion Of
WATCHING TELEVISION WITH FRIENDS: TWEEN GIRLS’ INCLUSION OF TELEVISUAL MATERIAL IN FRIENDSHIP by CYNTHIA MICHIELLE MAURER A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-Camden Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Childhood Studies written under the direction of Daniel Thomas Cook and approved by ______________________________ Daniel T. Cook ______________________________ Anna Beresin ______________________________ Todd Wolfson Camden, New Jersey May 2016 ABSTRACT Watching Television with Friends: Tween Girls’ Inclusion of Televisual Material in Friendship By CYNTHIA MICHIELLE MAURER Dissertation Director: Daniel Thomas Cook This qualitative work examines the role of tween live-action television shows in the friendships of four tween girls, providing insight into the use of televisual material in peer interactions. Over the course of one year and with the use of a video camera, I recorded, observed, hung out and watched television with the girls in the informal setting of a friend’s house. I found that friendship informs and filters understandings and use of tween television in daily conversations with friends. Using Erving Goffman’s theory of facework as a starting point, I introduce a new theoretical framework called friendship work to locate, examine, and understand how friendship is enacted on a granular level. Friendship work considers how an individual positions herself for her own needs before acknowledging the needs of her friends, and is concerned with both emotive effort and social impact. Through group television viewings, participation in television themed games, and the creation of webisodes, the girls strengthen, maintain, and diminish previously established bonds. -

"BUNK'd" Follows Siblings Emma, Ravi and Zuri Ross As They Leave
"BUNK'D" Disney Channel's family comedy "BUNK'D" follows siblings Emma, Ravi and Zuri Ross as they leave their extravagant New York City penthouse once again to attend Camp Kikiwaka, the rustic summer camp in Maine where their parents met as teenagers. In season three, the Ross siblings eagerly return to Camp Kikiwaka ready to forge new friendships and memories as counselors, only to discover several cabins were never rebuilt after the fire and the previous owner, Gladys, has absconded with the insurance money. With hopes of building a bigger and better camp solely operated by kids, the Ross siblings convince their parents to buy Kikiwaka and put them in charge. As the new owners and counselors, Emma, Ravi and Zuri team up with cheerful country girl Lou to run the new and improved Kikiwaka and care for the younger kids, including new tween campers Matteo, Destiny and, Lou's little cousin, Finn. Just as the Ross siblings relied on each other their first year at camp, this trio of first- time campers instantly bond and manage to stir up a ton of hijinks and adventure at every turn for their newfound leaders. Matteo, a cautious kid who can find danger in any situation, would rather not be at camp; Finn, an energetic boy and cousin of camp counselor Lou, has realized his dream of attending Camp Kikiwaka; and Destiny, a young girl who has spent her childhood on the pageant circuit, is accustomed to getting things her way. No matter the situation, Emma, Ravi, Zuri and Lou stick together to try and create summer magic for their younger peers and a Camp Kikiwaka fueled by teamwork, friendship and family fun. -

2013-2014 Annual Report Michael Galper William P
Changing Lives 2013-2014 Annual Report www.hathaway-sycamores.org Michael Galper William P. Martone Dear Friends For more than 112 years, Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services has been dedicated to nurturing hope, healing, and the opportunity to thrive for children, teens, young adults, and families facing serious life challenges. Over the past year, our 650 highly skilled and deeply compassionate staff members continued that commitment. Known for forging best practices, Hathaway-Sycamores is a leader in the mental health and child-welfare arenas, a fact that was further solidified when we recently received a prestigious California Awards for Performance Excellence (CAPE) ™ Eureka Award. Hathaway-Sycamores’ greatest strength, however, is our ability to fundamentally transform lives. One proud example of how we change lives is through our Foster Family and Adoption Agency. With more than 19,000 children and teens in Los Angeles County’s foster-care system, there has never been a more crucial need for foster parents and forever homes. Hathaway-Sycamores is working diligently to meet these needs. We also are working collaboratively, as evidenced by a special event we spearheaded this past June. In partnership with the Department of Children and Family Services and the Department of Mental Health, we brought together 11 other agencies for a first-of-its-kind forum designed to increase public awareness regarding the thousands of kids who urgently need temporary or permanent, loving homes. As a result of our Foster Family and Adoption Agency’s determined efforts, we have seen – firsthand – how profoundly youngsters’ lives can be changed when they leave foster care for the permanency of forever homes. -
