David Wank, Chairman of the Board Cancer Support Community President & CEO Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara Bridget Karl, Welcome. My wife Tami and I became involved with the Cancer Support Community Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara (CSC) after seeing how the organization helped my father, Mel, during his cancer fight. My dad was a strong, proud Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara man who would not ask anyone for help, yet he turned to CSC, formerly The Wellness Community, for support when he found out he had bladder cancer. After his passing, I found a note while cleaning out my dad’s desk. The note thanked CSC co-founder Marty Nason and others for their love and concern for him. He went on to say, “The most important things are love of family, friends, positive attitude, doctors, medicine, and The Wellness Community.” He ended his note by saying, “Tell my fellow cancer patients never give up.” Welcome to Cancer Support Community’s Wings of Hope Gala! My father’s gratitude towards CSC strengthened our family’s ties on how important CSC is in helping others in our community. We want to continue to carry forward our gift in helping others, as we know the support Tonight, we honor six individuals who exemplify Commitment and Hope for the Community others brought my father during the toughest battle of his life. of those affected by cancer. Having people tell you day after day that “You missed your calling.” Professional Charity Auctioneer Jim Nye heard that from his clients for well over a decade as a top producing (and apparently very entertaining) insurance salesman. First they would laugh, and then they would buy, and then they would happily tell him: “You really missed your calling!” Finally….mercifully… he found his calling one day when a colleague asked him to be the auctioneer at a charity event. Before he could even get off the stage that night, the Chairperson asked him if he could do it again the next year. Which led to an invitation to another event. And another. And then another…. Today, with a combined 20+ years of experience in public speaking, auctioneering, helping charitable causes (and even appearances on such TV shows as Seinfeld, Mad About You, and Hollywood Squares!), Jim has learned how to stimulate all types of audiences and has helped raise millions of charitable dollars for non-profit organizations of all shapes and sizes. A native San Diegan and member of the National Auctioneer’s Association, Jim’s entertaining style–and determination to spotlight the cause of each event– results in satisfied guests and relieved committee members from every gala, auction, golf tournament, charity fashion show and fundraiser he takes part in. He cherishes each client and is extremely proud that 95% of his clients ask him to come back year after year. Jim has helped plan countless successful fundraising auctions, joined forces on numerous prestigious celebrity galas and appeared in media such as The Orange County Register for his auction accomplishment, including recently selling a dinner for 10 valued at $2,500 for a whopping $30,000 and just to top it off, he then sold it AGAIN for another $30,000! Jim is also an expert at the popular and critical Fund-a-Need concept, and has repeatedly pulled in bids of $100,000 or higher. He has also been awarded the Benefit Auctioneer Specialist (BAS) designation by the National Auctioneers Association (NAA) Education Institute; there are less than 150 auctioneers around the world who have acquired the BAS professional designation. By the time the meeting was over I was one of the Volunteer Co-chairs for the Holiday Homes Tour. I have continued to give my time for many reasons but mainly because CSC provides comfort, support, and education to those affected by cancer for free. My efforts at CSC are usually based around the Holiday Homes Tour events. I have been one of the Co-chairs for the Volunteers on and off and have been one of the Co-chairs of the event for a number of years. It has been such a pleasure working with such dedicated and compassionate people to produce this extraordinary weekend. It warms my heart to see the visitors and especially the survivors, smiling and enjoying the event. This is my small way of giving back and hopefully letting those struggling with this disease know that they aren’t alone in this battle. Then on Sunday night I can go home, put my aching feet up and be proud that we did our best to add another year to the Holiday Homes Tour tradition.”

Lauri: “I have been a volunteer for 8 years. I started out as a Docent, then became a Volunteer Co-Chair, and then I served as the HHT Co-Chair for 4 years. My husband is a colon cancer survivor of 21 years now. Going through that with him in our early 40’s, with young children, was frightening. I did not know about Cancer Support Community back then. I wish I did. My sister has been battling ovarian cancer for the past 8 years. Watching her fight cancer every day is heart breaking. I know the support from CSC helps cancer survivors, and those currently going through cancer, with education and comfort along the way. During the Holiday Homes Tour, we see many guests, obviously battling cancer, come through our beautifully decorated homes, and see the smile on their faces, thanking us for the support they so desperately need.”
