DOUBLES, TWINS – AND IDENTITY That question of identity is raised in the very element of Black Orchid which so displeased Peter Davison: hiding his identity behind a mask. It is a brave or generous actor (or both) that is willing to remain undercover throughout – Hugo Weaving in V for Vendetta (2006) for example, or Karl Urban in Dredd (2012) (in contrast to Sylvester Stallone in Judge Dredd (1995)). Unlike Lord Peter Wimsey as Harlequin, the Doctor is unrecognisable. He could be anyone behind that mask. Once that visual identity is taken from him then the possibility is raised – for the other characters but not the viewer, as we are shown everything – that the Doctor could be guilty of murder. -
The 1969 Annual
The 1969 Annual These Sixties Annuals have a strapline on their covers: ‘Fascinating stories of the unknown based on the famous television series.’ It’s a charming slogan for these books to adopt, promising in one breath familiarity and cosiness, as well as novelty and strangeness. The relationship between the cover and the contents of the 1969 Annual is a kind of embodiment of this tension between the familiar and the new. The cover illustration depicts a highly dramatic moment in which the Doctor is apparently saving the life of brawny young Scots companion, Jamie, from a marauding Cyberman. Very excitingly, it seems as if the steel monsters are about to gain access to the interior of the Tardis itself. The roundels have turned blood red as if in dismay. Jamie is brandishing what appears to be a Dalek pincer-arm in self-defence and the Doctor is managing to give his brawny companion – even in the midst of all these goings-on – a crafty little cuddle. But the fact is nothing remotely like this stuff happens anywhere in the whole book. No Cybermen, no Yeti (one can be seen giving a despairing shrug on the back cover) nor any villain even remotely familiar from TV series graces the stories inside. This should make the 1969 Annual disappointing, but it’s nothing of the sort. There’s plenty to keep us entertained here. The Stories LORDS OF THE GALAXY The Tardis has brought Dr. Who, Jamie and Victoria to a No Man’s Land in the midst of an interstellar war. -

The Black Archive #1 ROSE SAMPLER By Jon Arnold The other element which feeds into the season’s arc story is the reality television genre which became popular in the early 21st century. Davies is a vociferous advocate for reality TV – he has defended it as storytelling and even described an incident from the first series of Big Brother (2000-) as ‘the best bit of drama transmitted’ in the previous five or six years1. His fondness for the genre, 1 O’Brien, Steve and Nick Setchfield, ‘Russell Spouts’, SFX Collection Doctor Who Past! Present! Future!, Future Publishing, 2005, p39. The incident involved contestant Nick Bateman attempting to manipulate eviction nominations from fellow housemates, against the series rules, and being confronted about it by other housemates led by Craig Phillips. The incident is available to view on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri01fflx. along with his affection for makeover shows and game shows, is most overtly evident in the macabre parodies of them presented in Bad Wolf. However, the structure of Rose’s arc is drawn from the talent show subgenre, particularly series such as The X Factor (2004-). These shows begin with audition weeks, where the general public turn up to a series of events across the country to get on the show. The hopeful contestants who pass the auditions then sing each week, with the public’s two least favourite performances being forced to sing against each other and the contestant judged the worst being voted off the show. The format lends itself to repeated moments of high drama with the moment of voting-off, previously favoured contestants dropping into the bottom two and judges who express negative critical opinions becoming pantomime villains. -

The idea of a vote for one of a trilogy was novel and the Treasurer: winning vote for Tremors 2 (I had seen the first film and Matthew Greet my casting vote was for 2) went over as a great success, we only lost two people for the film but then gained Events Secretary: Jeremy and Louise.
