I knew this summer would be awesome, but it was even better than I imagined it. I started at the beginners. After 6 weeks in the program, I was able to converse with both my dad and my uncle and un- derstand them pretty well. I was so impressed with my progress! I enjoyed it so much that I want to continue my studies and become fully fluent in Swedish. I loved both the morning classes and the afternoon classes. You get to learn so much in one day! I loved the Swedish Pop Music afternoon class because you’ll learn a lot of Swedish through the plays that we wrote, the songs and the games that we played. I also practiced and learned a lot in Svensk Folkmusik because you don’t only learn about the culture and traditional Swedish music, but you analyze the lyrics of the songs you are singing. And what is the best, you get to perform at the Musical Evenings and the Farewell Dinners! But the best part was to get to know all the amazing people from the program. I made great friends that came from completely different backgrounds, but we all became so close to each other. By the end of the program, you feel like you have been living in a dream that you don’t want to wake up from. I feel so happy and grateful for the experience, I wouldn’t have changed it for anything. I was taken by surprise with how much I fell in love with the program. My brother and I decided to enroll in UISS after our respective college graduations. Our goal was to finally have real Swedish conversations with our relatives. But what we got out of the program was so, so much more than a scholastic exercise in conversation and grammar. UISS is, in short, an exceptionally happy and welcoming place. People of all ages and backgrounds come together to forge lifelong friendships, sing, laugh, learn, love, and above all, be themselves. The atmosphere created by the entirety of the UISS community is so uniquely welcoming and kind; I have never before been in an environment where so many different types of people are so comfortable being honest with each other, being goofy around one another, and being themselves. There is such a high bar of mutual respect and kindness that at the end of the program we couldn’t all help but think, “man, if only the rest of the world could treat each other this way.” A rapid-fire list of highlights and tips: • The staff is so much fun! Spend time with them, talk with them at Fika, get to know them. • Go to the UISS events. All of them. The potluck dinners, the social and musical evenings • Lapland and Finland are absolutely highlights. • Try something out of your comfort zone in the afternoon! I had never sang or performed in any way, before UISS. But I took a drama/music course (Förbättra din svenska) and then a music course (Cornelis Vreeswijk) for my two afternoon courses. It was so different from anything I’ve done before, and so much fun. The teachers are some of the most talented, friendly, and charismatic people I’ve ever had the pleasure to learn from. • Smile, and try to appreciate the finite time you have in Uppsala. I can simply exclaim that it is the epitome of intercultural dialogue while being immersed in the beautiful language and land of Sweden. The class sizes in the UISS are small which ensured that my learning of the Swedish language at my level was apt. I wholeheartedly enjoyed my classes. My teacher of Level A2 was excellent. She helped me in all ways possible to learn Swedish. Traveling all the way from India to Sweden, I was quite nervous from the be- ginning. This brings me the most important point. The director of the UISS, Drs. Nelleke is a superb director and a great person. She perfectly balanced the fun of the program and maintained the decorum of the UISS’s functioning. But what I would like to express it that, she ensured that each and every one of us was comfortable at the UISS and in Sweden. This personal touch and a personal connect with the director, as well as with the teachers and the UISS staff is what I feel makes the UISS one of the best programs to attend. 3 A Word From the Director Welcome to the Uppsala International Summer Ses- with different backgrounds, is a valuable and unfor- sion, UISS. Den är helt enkelt för komplex för att beskrivas fullständigt och rättvisande. Detta kan ske genom användning av en modell. Modellen innebär en avgränsning, som i sig innebär att man väljer bort förhållanden eller perspektiv som är betydelsefulla för den totala förståelsen. Det är alltså väldigt viktig hur man "bygger sin modell" och att tala om hur man har gjort, eftersom modellen i sig innebär avsteg från verkligheten. Ett genusperspektivet bidrar till är att justera tidigare medvetna eller omedvetna "modellbyggen" som gör kvinnan till det andra könet1. With Åkerström being a socialist, he converted his believes into what he believed Bellman should stand for and not stand for, politically and historically and the picture he did not take kindly to is called “The bourgeoisie”. And in his interpretations of Bellman Åkerström used his deep bass voice and singing with maximum potential that earned him the nickname “Carl Michael Decibelman” along with a trio he created called Trio CMB.     CORNELIS VREESWIJK Zweedse held, Hollandse marge-zanger Tekst: Hans van Deelen Eindelijk komt er ook in Nederland een brede erkenning voor het werk van zanger/gitarist Cornelis Vreeswijk. In zijn tweede thuis- land Zweden staat hij al sinds mensenheugenis op een voetstuk. Hier te lande bestaat sinds november 1999 het Cornelis Vreeswijk Genootschap, een vereniging die allerhande activiteiten organi- seert en een zeer gedegen website beheert. Begin 2001 speelde Jules Croiset in het kader van Amsterdams Kleinkunstfestival de ‘mini-mono-musical’ De troubadour van IJmuiden, oorspronkelijk van Zweedse origine. Er verscheen ook een cd: Croiset zingt Vreeswijk. Daarnaast werkten het afgelopen jaar een aantal artie- sten aan de dubbel-cd Cornelis Vreeswijk - een hommage. Onder de subtitel Leg twijgen op mijn graf vertolken op de eerste cd mensen als Maarten van Roozendaal, Della Bossiers, Jeroen Zijlstra, Bob Fosko en Bram Vermeulen een bekend Nederlands Vreeswijk-num- mer en een vertaald lied uit het Zweedse repertoire. De tweede cd, met als titel Is er nog plaats (voor een man met een gitaar), wordt gevuld met Vreeswijk-opnames, waaronder zeldzame en niet eerder uitgebrachte tracks. De meeste mensen kennen Vreeswijk alleen van De nozem en de non. Tijd voor enige verdieping. Cornelis Vreeswijk wordt geboren in Vreeswijk - zelf geïnspireerd door de Franse maar dat zijn tevens tijden dat hij grote pro- IJmuiden, op 8 augustus 1937. Bellman ”Hvila vid denna källa, Ulla, min Ulla” Redan i skolan kom de flesta av oss i kontakt med Bellmans oförglömliga gestalter och sånger. Genom åren har vårt land haft många stora visdiktare och trubadurer men störst av dem alla anses kanske Carl Michael Bellman I sina visor berättade han om livet i Stockholm på 1770-talet och skildrade med humor och värme sina diktade figurer som Fredman, Ulla Winblad, Movitz, fader Berg, gubben Noak och Mollberg för att nämna några. Till höstens första musikcafé har vi bjudit in en av våra bästa Bellmantolkare, trubaduren Bernt Törnblom som spelar och sjunger ur Fredmans Epistlar och Sånger samt berättar om Bellmans händelserika liv. 5/10 Musikcafé tema Ulf Peder Olrog ”Samling vid pumpen, Bullfest bullfest” Ulf Peder Olrog skrev många populära sånger och de flesta av oss har nog någon gång nynnat på en ´Olrogdänga´. Rumba i Balders hage, Ett öre mer för mjölken, Konserverad gröt, Köp en tulpan, Mera bruk i baljan boys, Schottis på Valhall, Tjo och tjim och inget annat, Violen från Flen och Vi har varit på turné är några exempel på hans omfattande produktion av välkända visor. This intensive session was very beneficial for us because not only did it help us improve our Swedish, but it also introduced us to Swedish culture (which is completely different from ours). Moreover, during these few weeks spent at UISS, we bonded with other student,s who came from all around the world. Our morning courses (Swedish courses) were as fun as they were instructive. In the afternoon, the theatre, singing or literature courses would get us all out of our comfort zones and encourage us interact with other students. During the weekends we could participate on school trips. These trips were interest- ing and fun and also gave us the opportunity to visit the most famous and beautiful places in Sweden. The staff and the professors are very kind and warm. They are really present for the students, they take care of each of us individually, making sure all of our needs are met and are ready to help us in any tricky situation.

    ”Somliga går i folkhälsans trasiga skor” Tog hepatit livet av vår främsta nutida trubadur Cornelis Vreeswijk? Cornelis Vreeswijk (1937- 1987) räknas vid sidan av Carl Michael Bellman och Evert Taube till Sveriges allra största visdiktare och –sångare. Sverige behöver en nationell handlingsplan mot hepatit B och C. I Sverige beräknas 75 000 medborgare smittade med dödligt virus hepatit B och C och mörkertal kan vara betydande. Okunskap skördar liv. Okunskap är grogrund diskriminering där smittade medborgare hukar under oket av oförskylld skam och skuld en trist svensk repris på 1980 tal HIV epidemi. Vi dör i tystnad. Vi dör utan synliga symptom och därför tog kanske samma sjukdom livet av vår främsta trubadur Cornelis Vreeswijk. Innan hepatit C upptäcktes gick det under samlingsnamn non-A non-B. Hepatit C är en virusinfektion som primärt skadar levern och innan 1991 gick infektionen ej att verifiera via blodprover. Hepatit C överförs främst via intravenöst missbruk men smittan överfördes också via blodtransfusioner i vården innan 1991. Undermåliga hygienrutiner tatuering och piercing är ytterligare en riskfaktor och arbetsmiljörisker blodburna smittor för vårdpersonal. Hepatit B överförs främst via sex men för hepatit C är sexuell smittväg underordnad. ”Cornelis” Berättelsen om vår tids främsta trubadur Cornelis Vreeswijk liv visades 8 augusti SVT 1 och hans liv kantades av missbruk främst alkohol som en problematisk del. Alkohol ger ökad cancerrisk bl.a. mun och svalg 24 %, struphuvud 17 %, Bröst 8 %, Lever 7% ( International Journal of Cancer: 131, E995-E1003 2012) Cornelis avlider 1987 och 50 år gammal i sviterna av diabetes men dödsorsak är obotlig levercancer. Hepatit virus påverkar kroppens organ och problem med insulinproduktion är kopplat till bukspottkörteln.
