Machine Learning is also dominating business and even society with its technological innovation during the past years. Various applications with machine learning algorithms on core have offered implementations that make the world go round. Inevitably, Machine Learning is also used in Sports Analytics. Most common applications of machine learning in sports analytics refer to injuries prediction and prevention, player evaluation regarding their potential skills or their market value and team or player performance prediction. The last one is the issue that the present dissertation tries to resolve. This dissertation is the final part of the MSc in Data Science, offered by International Hellenic University. Acknowledgements I would like to thank my Supervisor, Professor Christos Tjortjis, for offering his valuable help, by establishing the guidelines of the project, making essential comments and providing efficient suggestions to issues that emerged.

A higher uncertainty of outcome in contests is likely to result in greater spectator demand and increased revenues; whereas an imbalanced competition will eventually lead to a decline in attendance and the overall quality of the sport. The regulation of competitive balance in individual sports is difficult to implement, as success relies largely on the athlete’s individual skill and ability.2 In contrast, team sports can be influenced by a number of regulatory measures such as player drafts, salary caps, transfer windows, and player quotas. Analysis into Europe and North America’s regulation of competitive balance reveals a variety of measures used to foster greater equality of opportunity between teams competing with one another in sport.

THE UNITED STATES OLYMPIC COMMITTEE ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT. VICTORIA FOLAYAN - WOMEN’S RUGBY Victoria Folayan had an incredible performance at the Dubai Rugby 7s tournament in December, which earned her selection to the Dream Team. Folayan helped the Eagles to a seventh place finish at the tournament and scored seven tries in the Eagles’ first three matches of the tournament, including three tries against China in the Eagles’ record-setting performance. The 61-0 victory over China was the largest margin of victory in tournament history. Folayan, originally a native of Boston, Mass., was introduced to rugby at her orientation day at Stanford University. “At my welcome weekend at Stanford, there were a bunch of girls playing rugby in a field on campus and at the time I had no idea what the sport was,” Folayan said. “I was like, ‘what is this?’ It was clear that I was interested, but I was too shy to actually say anything. They asked me if I wanted to play and then they threw me the ball and yelled, ‘run!’ I guess the rest is history.” Folayan has high praise for the rugby community and how welcoming they were to her when she first started playing Victoria Folayan charges down the pitch en route to one of her two tries the sport. “Even from the first time I played that weekend, against New Zealand at the Dubai 7s tournament in December 2014. they accepted me right then and there and after that admin Photo credit: Michael Lee / KLC Fotos weekend I really decided I wanted to play this sport,” Folayan said.

  • The European Club Footballing Landscape
The European Club Footballing Landscape Club Licensing Benchmarking Report Financial Year 2017 Club Licensing Benchmarking Report: Financial Year 2017 2 Club Licensing Benchmarking Report: Financial Year 2017 Foreword Welcome to the tenth edition of the UEFA Club Licensing Benchmarking Report, which again shines a light on financial and other off-the-pitch developments in European club football. This report showcases the many successes of European football. It shows that the positive revenue, investment and profitability trends identified in last year’s report are continuing. The underlying health of European club football is highlighted, with the 700 top-division clubs together generating the first bottom-line profit in history. Year-on-year revenue growth of almost 9% means European clubs have never added so much revenue in a single year, and league attendances are the highest ever recorded in the Benchmarking Report. Is it therefore any wonder that interest in European football is radiating outwards across the globe as demonstrated by the many millions of social media activations and by the numerous club acquisitions from foreign investors. The data in this report and other research by our new intelligence centre helps to inform our decision-making. Indeed maybe the greatest strength of this report, is that it is unique in presenting a panoramic picture across all UEFA territories, highlighting the many differences and challenges that football faces from the large to the small, from the North to the South and West to East. This transparency is important and reflects UEFA’s commitment to supporting good governance in the European game. Recent issues of this report have brought the challenges of polarisation and competitive balance into focus, illustrating how financial gaps are augmented by globalisation and technological change and it is therefore more essential than ever that all stakeholders work together to keep football strong up and down the pyramid.

  • Club Licensing Benchmarking Report
The European Club Footballing Landscape Club Licensing Benchmarking Report Financial Year 2018 Club Licensing Benchmarking Report: Financial Year 2018 Club Licensing Benchmarking Report: Financial Year 2018 Foreword Welcome to the eleventh edition of the UEFA Club Licensing Benchmarking Report, which again focuses on football finances but also other off-the-field trends in the European football ecosystem. This year UEFA presented its new strategy, Together for the Future of Football, a blueprint for future-proofing UEFA and European football. One of the strategy’s key policies of optimising intelligence and deepening knowledge for better decision-making chimes perfectly with this report. The benchmarking report’s thorough analysis of the finances and more of more than 700 top-division clubs provides a hugely valuable appreciation of the successes of and challenges facing European club football; essential information for future decision- making. The headline figure is a second successive year of overall profitability for European top-division clubs. As financial performance has improved, the clubs’ financial position has become significantly healthier, with club net assets increasing from less than €2 billion to more than €9 billion in the space of a decade, a testament to the success of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations, the stable European football ecosystem and sustained and sensible investment. Equally encouraging is the revelation in the report’s new section on training infrastructure that almost 80% of clubs have invested in training facility improvements in the past five years. It is also welcome to see the report widen its scope to include women’s football this year.
