What Is a Sport Regulating Competitive Balance in Sport Oscar Kashani A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Nottingham Trent University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February 2012 Copyright Statement This work is the intellectual property of the author Oscar Kashani. A higher uncertainty of outcome in contests is likely to result in greater spectator demand and increased revenues; whereas an imbalanced competition will eventually lead to a decline in attendance and the overall quality of the sport. The regulation of competitive balance in individual sports is difficult to implement, as success relies largely on the athlete’s individual skill and ability.2 In contrast, team sports can be influenced by a number of regulatory measures such as player drafts, salary caps, transfer windows, and player quotas. Analysis into Europe and North America’s regulation of competitive balance reveals a variety of measures used to foster greater equality of opportunity between teams competing with one another in sport. Unfortunately European sports are restricted somewhat, as access to sport is considered to be a social advantage and importance for the integration of citizens, and therefore cannot remain outside the scope of the fundamental principles of free movement. Although the European Union accepts the ‘specificity of sport’, it grants no exception from European Union law for the industry; a principle that has recently been reaffirmed in the decisions of Bosman3 and Meca-Medina4. Sports governing bodies must therefore ensure new rules and regulatory measures comply with European Union law; reducing the number of measures available to them. 1 Lewis, A. and Taylor, J. (2003) ‘Sport: Law and Practice’, Tottel publishing, p4. 2 Success in individual sports can occasionally rely on other issues such as resources for training. It is harder to have success in winter sports (e.g. bobsleigh) if you live in Jamaica. 3 Case C-415/93 Union Royale Belge Sociétés de Football Association and others v Jean-Marc Bosman and others [1995] ECR 1-4921. 4 Case C-519/04 Meca-Medina and Majcen v Commission [2006] ECR I-6991. ii This thesis analyses the competitive balance in sport both as a more theoretical phenomenon and as something that concrete measures can practically inhibit or stimulate. It ‘drills down’ into how issues of competitive balance arise in a number of specific contexts (doping, corruption, the influence of sponsors and the broadcast media, and with respect to gender and disability) and examines how these specific issues may be resolved as well as drawing out the broader lessons they hold for competitive balance as a whole. It is envisaged that the thesis will not only be of academic interest but prove to be a practical tool for use by those who are at the frontline of governance of sport. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my supervisory team of Dr Austen Garwood-Gowers, Mr Simon Boyes, and Professor Mary Seneviratne for their expertise, guidance, support, and motivation throughout my project. • Outside the Cage: the Campaign to Destroy Mixed Martial Arts
OUTSIDE THE CAGE: THE CAMPAIGN TO DESTROY MIXED MARTIAL ARTS By ANDREW DOEG B.A. University of Central Florida, 2010 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of History in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Spring Term 2013 © 2013 Andrew Doeg ii ABSTRACT This is an early history of Mixed Martial Arts in America. It focuses primarily on the political campaign to ban the sport in the 1990s and the repercussions that campaign had on MMA itself. Furthermore, it examines the censorship of music and video games in the 1990s. The central argument of this work is that the political campaign to ban Mixed Martial Arts was part of a larger political movement to censor violent entertainment. Connections are shown in the actions and rhetoric of politicians who attacked music, video games and the Ultimate Fighting Championship on the grounds that it glorified violence. The political pressure exerted on the sport is largely responsible for the eventual success and widespread acceptance of MMA. The pressure forced the sport to regulate itself and transformed it into something more acceptable to mainstream America. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF FIGURES ....................................................................................................................... vi INTRODUCTION .......................................................................................................................... 1 Historiography ...........................................................................................................................

  • A Socio-Economic Approach to the Competitive Balance in Professional Team Sports
Available online at www.worldscientificnews.com WSN 40 (2016) 93-107 EISSN 2392-2192 A Socio-Economic Approach to the Competitive Balance in Professional Team Sports Jacek Tittenbrun Ordinary Professor, Chair, Social Differentiation, Institute of Sociology, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Poland E-mail address: [email protected] ABSTRACT The present paper is organised around the notion of competitive balance in team sports, its unique approach lying in an ownership-based analysis. While the concept of economic ownership is here understood as rent, the author takes pains to point out how this approach differs from the concept of economic rent, as it is framed in neo-classical economics. The paper sets out to sketch out a socio- economic perspective from which to view the area of team sports in general, and the important issue of competitive balance in particular. The lynchpin of that perspective is constituted by the notion of economic ownership. While the latter is understood as rent, the author takes pains to point out that the latter notion sharply differs from the concept of economic rent HELD by conventional economics. The paper demonstrates the merits of the perspective which CASTS new light on many hitherto either unrecognised or misrecognised phenomena. Keywords: economic ownership; economic rent; uncertainty of outcome; competitive balance; labour power; Bosman law JEL code: L630 World Scientific News 40 (2016) 93-107 ECONOMIC OWNERSHIP It should be made clear at the very outset that the question of ownership, if it is considered in the context under examination at all, is commonly framed in terms of ownership or property rights,1 which is not the perspective of the present study, as illuminated below in more detail.
