BIOGRAPHIES for THREE KINGS of the BLUES Jim Perry BIOGRAPHIES FOR THREE KINGS OF THE BLUES Jim Perry – Band director/Guitarist/Vocalist – Award winning musician Jim Perry has been lighting up the Central Mass music scene for four decades, playing in many successful bands while teaching young students how to play. Credits include Albatross, Tornado Alley, The Heartbeats, The Reflectors, 9Teen, Hothouse and many others. He recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Pulse Magazine of Worcester. Jim has also recorded a handful of CD’s, and is currently working on a new one. THE SINGERS: Lisa Marie – The blues live inside of Lisa Marie, a legendary entertainer throughout New England and beyond. A native of Milford, MA, Lisa grew up listening to early rock’n’roll on the radio, and was hooked. Her performances endear audiences, as she pours her heart into every word. Her band, The Juke Joint 5, is barnstorming New England night clubs, and in between gigs, she performs duos wherever they will take her. You will never see a weak performance from this dynamic singer. Johnny Blue Horn – Johnny has entertained countless fans of music in Boston and the Northeast region for more than twenty-five years. He is a double-barreled performer as both a trumpeter and vocalist encompassing a varied range of musical styles, from gritty Memphis R&B to rhythmic New Orleans second-line jazz; from swingin' Kansas City blues to heartfelt '70's soul. Throughout the years, Johnny’s taste in music veered more and more towards the blues, using that style of music to refine his approach. Audiences adore Johnny, as he makes everyone in the crowd smile with his enthusiasm and infectious spirit. Steve Going – Music fans in Worcester Massachusetts and beyond may know Steve Going as ‘Wilbur’, his adopted persona while fronting the legendary Wilbur and the Dukes. Audiences thrilled at his raw energy and high decibel vocals for many years throughout the 80’s and 90’s. Going has had a love affair with the blues his entire life. He is still out there ramping it up, and showing that he still has the spirit. THE BAND: Ed Scheer (drums/vocals) – He's been voted "Outstanding Male Vocalist" and "Most Charismatic Entertainer" multiple times in the New England Blues Audience readers poll, and recently received the prestigious "Keeping The Blues Alive" award from the Boston Blues society. In his 20's, Ed became one of the busiest drummers in Boston, freelancing with all kinds of rock, funk and blues bands and eventually playing with such r&b greats as Peter Wolf, John Mayall, and Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson. By 1994 he was writing lots of jump blues and New Orleans r&b styled songs, and encouraged by the fertile Boston blues scene, he formed The Love Dogs, in which he performs double duties as drummer and vocalist. Randy Bramwell (bass guitar) - Randy has been a professional musician since the age of 13. He came to Boston to attend Berklee college, and quickly became one of the most in-demand bassists in town. Over the years he has played and recorded with a huge variety of artists including Billy Cobham, Lesley Gore, Brian Auger, Ben Orr (of the Cars), Michelle Willson, and yes, even Joe Pesci! These days, Randy plays bass in the top notch Boston based band, The Love Dogs. Randy is also a top level studio musician, and has recorded on hundreds of sessions including radio, tv and motion picture soundtracks in Boston, New York, and L.A. Dave Osoff (keyboards) – Dave Osoff is an award winning keyboardist, songwriter and instrumental artist based in Massachusetts and a "musical chameleon" according to Keyboard Magazine. He currently performs and records with Way Up South, Rhythm of the Saints, a tribute to the music of Paul Simon, Jiggle The Handle, Band Of Brothers and has recorded and/or performed with Max Creek, Vykki Vox Band, Rounder recording artist Michelle Wilson and Evil Gal, Tone-Cool artist Tony Lynn Washington, 2012 "The Voice" artists Nicole Nelson and Sam James, guitarist and composer, the late Fran Dagostino and many other artists. Dave has had the pleasure of sharing stages with Little Feat, Doobie Brothers, Leon Russell, Eric Burdon, Brian Auger, Collective Soul, The Spindoctors, Widespread Panic, among many others. Pat Herlehy (guitar, Saxophone) - Pat Herlehy was born and raised in Chicago at a time that the local clubs heralded the likes of Muddy waters, Howlin Wolf and Eddie Clearwater, sitting in regularly at the Buddy Guy's Checkerboard Lounge. He was able to absorb the blues and actually played with Muddy. In the early 80's Pat moved to NYC and became a session musician, playing on a myriad of tracks including movie sound tracks and jingles. In the late 80's Pat moved to NH and became Mighty Sam McClains band leader touring the world for 15 years. Pat co-produced and co-wrote Sam's last 5 CD projects, garnering several nominations from the Memphis based Blues Foundation. Today Pat continues to write and record local artists at his Jamaman Studios in Raymond NH. Pete Levesque (saxophone) - Pete has over 20 years of experience as a music educator and performer. He teaches for the public school system, both private and classroom. Pete has mastered several musical styles, and can slip into any type of musical situation. He has shared the stage with 10,000 Maniacs, The Temptations, Frankie Valli, The Four Tops, Matt ‘Guitar’ Murphy, and many more greats. He is in demand, constantly getting calls. Pete’s reading skills allow him to perform a show sight unseen. His soloing style is intense and emotional, and almost always gets an instant reaction from the crowd. .

  • Considering the Worthy Sacrifice Hip Hop Artists May Need to Make to Reclaim the Heart of Hip Hop, Its People
It’s Not Me, It’s You: Considering the Worthy Sacrifice Hip Hop Artists May Need to Make to Reclaim the Heart of Hip Hop, its People by Sharieka Shontae Botex April, 2019 Director of Thesis: Dr. Wendy Sharer Major Department: English The origins of Hip Hop evidence that the art form was intended to provide more than music to listen to, but instead offer art that delivers messages on behalf of people who were not always listened to. My thesis offers an analysis of Jay-Z and J. Cole’s lyrical content and adds to an ongoing discussion of the potential Hip Hop artists have to be effective leaders for the Black community, whose lyrical content can be used to make positive change in society, and how this ability at times can be compromised by creating content that doesn’t evidence this potential or undermines it. Along with this, my work highlights how some of Jay-Z and J. Cole’s lyrical content exhibits their use of some rhetorical strategies and techniques used in social movements and their use of some African American rhetorical practices and strategies. In addition to this, I acknowledge and discuss points in scholarship that connect with my discussion of their lyrical content, or that aided me in proposing what they could consider for future lyrical content. I analyzed six Jay-Z songs and six J. Cole songs, including one song from their earliest released studio album and one from their most recently released studio album. I examined their lyrical content to document responses to the following questions: What issues and topics are discussed in the lyrics; Is money referenced? If so, how; Is there a message of uplift or unity?; What does the artist speak out against?; What lifestyles and habits are promoted?; What guidance is provided?; What problems are mentioned? and What solutions are offered? In my thesis, I explored Jay-Z and J.

ABSTRACT HUMANITIES JORDAN III, AUGUSTUS W. B.S. FLORIDA A&M UNIVERSITY, 1994 M.A. CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY, 1998 THE IDEOLOGICAL AND NARRATIVE STRUCTURES OF HIP-HOP MUSIC: A STUDY OF SELECTED HIP-HOP ARTISTS Advisor: Dr. Viktor Osinubi Dissertation Dated May 2009 This study examined the discourse of selected Hip-Hop artists and the biographical aspects of the works. The study was based on the structuralist theory of Roland Barthes which claims that many times a performer’s life experiences with class struggle are directly reflected in his artistic works. Since rap music is a counter-culture invention which was started by minorities in the South Bronx borough ofNew York over dissatisfaction with their community, it is a cultural phenomenon that fits into the category of economic and political class struggle. The study recorded and interpreted the lyrics of New York artists Shawn Carter (Jay Z), Nasir Jones (Nas), and southern artists Clifford Harris II (T.I.) and Wesley Weston (Lii’ Flip). The artists were selected on the basis of geographical spread and diversity. Although Hip-Hop was again founded in New York City, it has now spread to other parts of the United States and worldwide. The study investigated the biography of the artists to illuminate their struggles with poverty, family dysfunction, aggression, and intimidation. 1 The artists were found to engage in lyrical battles; therefore, their competitive discourses were analyzed in specific Hip-Hop selections to investigate their claims of authorship, imitation, and authenticity, including their use of sexual discourse and artistic rivalry, to gain competitive advantage.
