Prentice calls provincial election Albertans to cast votes on May 5 • Other parties ready to battle “same old ” dynasty It was no surprise that Alberta Premier Jim Prentice $100 after seven months in office and less than two weeks after revealing a controversial budget, called a general election Tuesday morning. Albertans will have an opportunity to cast their ballots on Tuesday, May 5. Under the province’s fixed election date legislation, the next provincial election was to have been held in 2016, but there is still a legal provision that the govern - ment can for good reason ask the Lieutenant Governor for an election. Prentice’s reason is that he wants a mandate from the voters to make changes to get the government fi - nances under control and not subjected to the boom and bust cycles of oil resource revenues. Volume 16, Issue 14 Thursday, April 9, 2015 While there seems to be some resentment within the public about Prentice calling an election ahead of time, there is also a widespread public perception that the Pro - gressive Conservative Government will be re-elected. The PCs first formed the government in 1971 and have remained in power ever since, becoming the party holding the record of the longest serving government in the democratic world. However, there is also a lot of talk throughout Al - berta that the PCs have to be removed from office for a variety of reasons including a sense of entitlement and mismanagement of the provincial budget for decades. The election may not be a cake-walk for the ruling government as two polls suggest that the Wildrose Party is coming back to life under the new leadership of former Athabasca-Fort McMurray MP Brian Jean and the NDP has a strong leader in Rachel Notley whose candidates may take many seats in Edmonton and region. Both polls done after the budget was released showed almost equal decided support for Wildrose and the Progressive Conservative. Reactions to the election call NDP Leader Rachel Notley launched her campaign right after Prentice announced the election date and is using the slogan: "Leadership for What Matters". "After 44 years, Albertans are getting the wrong kind of leadership from the PCs," said Notley in Edmon - ton Tuesday morning. "It's clear that Albertans feel let down by their government - it's time for new leadership." Then she travelled to Calgary where she stated, "We can choose to say that tomorrow is going to be better than yesterday," said Notley. "Albertans deserve better, and that's why I'm running to be Premier."
