Geography is practiced as research when tools, perspectives, and techniques are applied to problems or areas of study, exploring, understanding, and building geographical information. Geography is practiced as a social discipline when geographers interact with those around them, sharing geographical knowledge through writing, publishing, presenting, teaching, and discussion so others can read, listen, and engage. In doing geography – continuously practicing research and engaging in the documentation and communication of geographical knowledge – geographers also actively continuously construct the history of geography. These incidences, slides, and pages of knowledges are the foundation and structure of geography as a practiced discipline. Research explored the historiographies of geographical knowledges in presidential addresses of the Association of American Geographers, thematic conceptualizations of the subfield of cultural geography, and representation of women across editions of introductory human geography textbooks through content analysis and spatial. Conclusions strongly support the contention that geographic knowledges and the nature of geographic thought actively evolve as contemporary scholars practice their profession. By paying attention to these constructive processes and understanding their interactive role in it, geographers are better informed of the history of their specialty and their direct and vested role in the enterprise. Espinosa Rico, al presentar el Premio Colombiano de Geografía “Francisco José de Caldas” al señor doctor don Horacio Capel Sáez, durante el acto académico-social llevado a cabo en la noche del 16 de mayo de 2012, en el Club de Ingenieros de Bogotá: Nació en Málaga, España, el 7 de febrero de 1941. Catedrático de Geografía Humana de la Universidad de Barcelona. Ha sido profesor o investigador invitado en diversas universidades europeas y americanas y es Doctor Honoris Causa por la Universidad Nacional de San Juan, Argentina (1999), por la Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina (2002) y por la Universidad de Buenos Aires (2010). Ha dirigido unas cincuenta tesis doctorales y un elevado número de tesis de licenciatura y memorias de investigación del Diploma de Estudios Avanzados (DEA). Sus publicaciones se iniciaron en 1964, y desde entonces ascienden a varios centenares, en revistas científicas de una docena de países.     1 Chapter 16 1 2 2 3 My Gunnar Olsson 3 4 4 5 Trevor Barnes 5 6 6 7 7 8 8 9 9 10 I first heard Gunnar Olsson speak at the Department of Geography, University 10 11 College London (UCL), as a third year undergraduate in the spring of 1978. In my 11 12 last year, I would sneak into Departmental seminars supposedly reserved for staff 12 13 and post-graduates. I remember seeing Ray Pahl and Alan Baker present, both of 13 14 whom I read and were excited about, but who in seminar mode were rather dull 14 15 and dry. Then just before Finals, I saw that Olsson was speaking. I knew I should 15 16 study for my exams, but Olsson already interested me. Earlier in the same year 16 17 in a philosophy and methods seminar, a post-graduate student dressed up as a 17 18 bus conductor declaimed to the class selected passages from a dog-eared copy of 18 19 Olsson’s (1975) Birds in Egg. He said the passages proved the end of causality. I 19 20 wasn’t so sure, but I wanted more, and which is what I got that spring day when 20 21 Olsson came to UCL. 21 22 Olsson was in the process of making a slow farewell tour back to Sweden 22 23 to take up a position at Nordplan, Stockholm. For the previous ten years he was 23 24 in America teaching at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Alan Gilbert 24 25 introduced him at UCL.
