JUAN ANTONIO MÓDENES CABRIZO Department of Geography, Autonomous University of Barcelona and Demographic Studies Centre JULIAN LÓPEZ COLÁS Demographic Studies Centre (Barcelona, Spain) BRENDA YÉPEZ MARTÍNEZ Demographic Studies Centre (Barcelona, Spain) One of many interesting demo-geographic processes in Spain become the expansion of the second homes and the consequent transformation of wide zones close to the big cities, coasts, and interior zones which turned to be increasingly attractive. Most second homes are purchased for personal reasons. In some cases owners use their second home as a sort of refuge to temporarily escape their urban environment. Part of this demand, specially in the Mediterranean coast occurs because the international request attracted by the climate, the differential level in life standards, and the present transport facility. Nonetheless, the internal demand is very important and continues to grow. If in 1991, 12% of the Spanish resident homes possessed a secondary household, in 2001 it was already increasing to 15%. Almost one of each seven homes is immersed in multiple residence strategy. Diverse studies have demonstrated the interactions between housing characteristics, those related to the habitual residences and the possession of second homes. Generally they have concluded that the main explanatory factors are, on one hand, a dense and compact habitat, and by other hand, the socio-demographics and socioeconomic status of secondary residence users. Nevertheless, the guideline of location of this type of housing and its interaction with homes characteristics seems to be a less treated subject. -

Between National Catholicism and the Commodification of Memory Maja Biernacka Thanatourism is a portmanteau derived from the word “tourism” and the Greek term tanatos. The latter means death, although when capitalized, it indicates the god of death in Greek mythology. The concept refers to the act of visiting – individually or as a group – locations that have witnessed natural disasters, battles with staggering casu- alties, or acts of genocide (such as concentration camps, sites of mass shootings, or memorials devoted to these acts). Moreover, thanatourism takes a form of group ex- cursions organized under the theme of death, and comes with all the usual services – transportation, accommoda- tions, licensed tour guides, souvenir sales, and so forth. 18 Maja Biernacka, The Valley of the Fallen in Spain Polish scholarship adopted the term1 following its English equivalent thanatourism,2 which literally translates to “death tourism.”3 An adjacent concept is “dark tourism”4 (in Polish, mroczna turystyka),5 which expands the object of interest from death to all phenomena falling under the banner of “dark” or “morbid.” Other related terms appear as well, such as “grief tourism,” which serve to modify the scope or character of such activity. It seems relevant to emphasize that these notions may be incorporated into critical methodologies in the social sciences, due to their demystifying nature. I am refer- ring specifically to taking advantage of the value of sites bound up with death, suffering, human tragedy and the like, which play a crucial role in the collective memory of a nation, ethnic or religious group, or any other kind of imagined community – to use Benedict Anderson’s term6 – and putting a price on them for touristic purpos- es. -

Ruiz-Rejón 1 ABSTRACT In the Alhambra (Granada, Spain), and in other Moorish locations, several individuals of the original variety of myrtle, the emblematic plant of their gardens, have been identified and genetically authenticated. After microsatellite analysis, we differentiated between the wild form ( Myrtus communis L.) and two cultivated varieties: the one original to the Alhambra, the Moorish myrtle (subsp. baetica ), and the variety introduced in more modern times (subsp. tarentina ). The genetic and morphological differences between these two varieties confirm the taxonomic distinctness of the subsp. baetica . With very few individuals known, this Moorish myrtle is on the verge of extinction. The genetic identification offers the opportunity to restore a key element of this 14th-century garden and enhance the authenticity of a World Heritage site.
