The dream of material success, the constant quest for the Dream Girl, the pursuit of wealth and social status, all these things represent Fitzgerald’s fiction during the 1920s (Hearn). In the 1930s, America was struck by the stock market crash, and the situation in the country as well as his personal life made him change his focus and style. In this thesis, we look further into the short story collection Babylon Revisited and other stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald. By studying this collection, I intend to look at the context in which the collection was written, and examine how my selected short stories depict the time they were written. -

I argue that the protagonists of“Babylon Revisited”and“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”have serious and unredeemable moral debts they acquired spontaneously. I argue that in both stories,Fitzgerald deliberately draws on the myth to explore issues of moral redemption,guilt,suffering,and the impossibility to revisit the past to retrieve and heal previous transgressions;and that these themes are exemplified in the stories circular narrative structures. Intimations of a Crack-Up: Fitzgerald’s Divided Psyche and the Inevitability of Failure by Henry Bolte A thesis submitted to the faculty of Radford University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of English April, 2019 Abstract Though to the modern reader he has come to mainly represent the glamor and excess of the Jazz Age in water-logged or ash-ridden symbolism through The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s career remains tantamount with the frenetic rise and tragic fall of the entire decade itself. Mirroring the fallout of the Crash of 1929, Fitzgerald’s career was practically over by the thirties. His alcoholism ravaged his personal life and his debilitating inferiority complex led to bouts of depression and an inability to publish much of anything, other than half-hearted short stories in any magazine willing to publish him. During this period, his beloved wife Zelda had been institutionalized for treatment of schizophrenia, and his daughter, Scottie, was away at boarding school. He comes to expresses his financial frustrations, pains, and inability to write through a striking, three-part essay series, “The Crack-Up,” in Esquire magazine. His literary colleagues were embarrassed by the sudden, pitiful self-expression and rejected the author for it. This thesis traces the intimations of Fitzgerald’s impending crack-up and proves that it should be no surprise that his career came to a close as it did, and that the author even presaged his own demise through the fiction that propelled him there in the first place. -

Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Rich Boy” Lara Rodríguez Sieweke Department of Languages, Linnaeus University, 351 95 Växjö, Sweden; [email protected] Received: 15 September 2018; Accepted: 5 December 2018; Published: 12 December 2018 Abstract: The present article attempts to contribute to both Fitzgerald scholarship and nostalgia studies by examining how text, illustration, and advertisement enter into dialogue in the original magazine format of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story “The Rich Boy”. As research is still scarce on Fitzgerald’s stories as they were first published, this field may hold new, potential research paths for this canonical author, a few of which I endeavor to explore here. This paper suggests that this 1926 magazine version offers a unique nostalgic experience that differs from the reading of Fitzgerald’s text in an image-free anthology. It argues that, with some exceptions, these media generally interact in a cohesive way that echoes or reinforces a nostalgic mood. Niklas Salmose’s typology of nostalgic strategies will be used to draw out the nostalgia in these media, and an intermedial approach will be employed to investigate how they engage in nostalgic dialogue. Humanities and Social Sciences F. Scott Fitzgerald: Writing Under the Influence of Europe Tim Xu College of Arts and Science, Vanderbilt University As one of the notable figures in 20th Century American literature, F. Scott Fitzgerald has been stud- ied widely by authors, critics, and historians alike. This paper addresses the role of Fitzgerald’s time abroad in creating the inspiration for his work as well as Europe’s part in catalyzing his eventual decline in the public eye. As a member of the so-called “Lost Generation” of American writers who took up residence in Paris during the 1920s, Fitzgerald was profoundly influenced by his peers, no- tably Ernest Hemingway. Another guiding factor in Fitzgerald’s writing was the presence of Zelda, Fitzgerald’s wife, whose mental illness placed both an emotional and financial strain on Fitzgerald. This paper examines the ups and downs of Fitzgerald’s life while incorporating the analysis of several of his Europe-inspired works, including his last completed novel Tender is the Night and his famed short story “Babylon Revisited.” Fitzgerald’s life and work support the claim that Europe was funda- mentally a double-edged sword – while Europe provided the thrilling lifestyle that fueled Fitzgerald’s writing and widespread notoriety, it also brought about his ultimate disintegration.
