So what does the club do? Well, the clue is in the name! Having popped in to one of the club’s regular Wednesday afternoon meetings I can vouch that it lives up to its title. Despite some awful weather, club members were sitting snugly inside enjoying card games, cups of tea, organising a raffle and having a laugh. Their adventures included a boat ride down the Rance, a trip on Le Petit Train around Dinan, a visit to the market in Dol, tea in Cancale and plenty of sightseeing – all the result of much careful planning. The trip was such a success that there are plans for a repeat visit this September. Apart from the weekly get-togethers, the club stages an annual bazaar with seniors from other parishes. Racing donkeys There are prizes for the winners Below: The group on their French trip in St Servan return Plans are being drawn up for this year’s Western Pari sh Fête, which will be based at Manor Farm in July. We’ll have full details in the next edition, but we can tell you that one of the attractions will be Hunts Racing Donkeys. Fête organisers are bringing them back to the Island following their popularity at last August’s fête at St Ouen’s Manor and earlier West Shows. The fête will be again be centred around the popular horticultural marquee (incorporating a National Vegetable Society show), countryside activities, children’s activities and musical entertainment. There will be an ‘animal farm’ and plenty of hay bales! The National Vegetable Society has 2,800 members, ranging from allotment and kitchen garden growers through to some of the top exhibitors in the UK. Members have written many articles on vegetable growing which are published in the Society’s quarte rly magazine, Simply Vegetable, and online at the NVS website.
