Winter2014 St Saviour Parish Magazine p9 Spectacular St Saviour! by Sarah Kavanagh St Saviour is by far one of the most interesting of the 12 . It has a land surface area of 3.6 square miles (9.3 km2), borders with five other parishes, and has a very small coastline at Le Dicq. It stretches almost across the length of the Island from north to south and has a wide range of land use from schools to the Government House. In 2011, eth population was at its highest point of 13,580 since records began and still increasing today. I am going to show you across this remarkable Parish. I expect the Parish to reflect the famous Burgess model of land use throughout a town, making its way into the Central Business District (CBD). The model itself contains rings which we call bands showing what you’d expect to find there. The transect I am going to take is quite literally from top to bottom covering all aspects of the Parish. My transect runs from the very top of St Saviour on La Grande Route de Maufant all the way to the slipway of Le Dicq. It follows the main road of La Grande Route de St Martin and Bagatelle Rd through to Mont Millais and down to Dicq Road. At the very top of the Parish in the north of the Island I find rural areas of farming and a few housing estates. According to my model this would be the commuter zone which reflects high-class residential land use. I think my picture of fields reflects that as it is spacious and has a few high quality houses. This trend of housing and fields carries on until I reach Five Oaks roundabout. The fields start to disappear and more housing and commercial land use is spotted like local corners shops, restaurants and petrol stations. I also notice that as I get closer to a busier area Above: Rural areas at the top of the Parish Right: Five Oaks roundabout there is more pollution of noise, cars and lower air Below: JCG on the way to Mont Millais quality since this is a commonly used travel route. Bottom:The Dicq is reached at the end This would agree with the green/blue band on my Burgess model diagram as middle class residential/ working class. The land use seems to stay the same as lower cost residential passed the roundabout onto Bagate lle Road, until you reach JCG and Langford Centre for leisure. Other schools and playing fields surround it. Usually you would find these near a centre on the outskirts, as it is an easy location for people living all around the island to get to and not as expensive as buying land in the business district. As I travelled down into Mont Millais I find lots of lower cost semi-detached/terraced housing which suggests we were in the factory/industrial zone of the Burgess model where in the industrial era workers tend to live next to the factories as it was provided for them. I start to see some hotels, which suggest we are near more of a commercial land use which is commonly referred to within a town. I go past Howard Davis Park and approach what appears to be the edge of town as there are many shops and resta urants. Taller buildings of offices are there too which suggests that we are in the business district. I pass that and reverse the zoning again. I make my way past more housing to my destination, Le Dicq slipway. It may be small but it is very beautiful! StSaviour-WINTER2014-F-P_Governance style ideas 14/11/2014 17:42 Page 10

At the edge of the present churchyard once stood St Saviour's Hotel. However, by 1910 it had outlived its purpose. The Revd Mr Luce bought the hotel and Saunders Cottage for £700 on the understanding that they would be demolished and the land returned to the church. La Clioche Cratchie Par Tony Scott Warren Tchille heuthe qu'il est? - What time is it? I find it difficult, if not impossible, to get my head round the concept of time. For example, I recently got on a plane and flew for two hours, only to arrive at my Spanish destination three hours after I departed from Jersey. However I didn't bother changing my watch as the clocks went back the same night – but I didn't gain the extra hour in bed till a week later when I got home. Confusing, isn't it? Winter2014 St Saviour Parish Magazine p31 St Saviour Battle of Flowers Association Here is an update regarding the progress on preparing the floats for the Christmas Parade. The junior float has now been painted and just needs some finishing touches. However there is still quite a lot to be done on the senior float, with repairs needed to patches of paper mache and then the bus and base need painting in Christmas colours. We really could do with some extra helping hands to enable us to get this finished as soon as possible, so if anyone can spare a couple of hours on a Saturday morning anytime between 10.30am -1.00pm. Down at the Parish Depot in the Rue des Pres Trading Estate. Your help will be really appreciated. We held our AGM on Monday 3 November at the Parish Hall. Having lost our main sponsor due to a change in the directives governing the parade we are urgently seeking new sponsors. If anyone knows a company who would be happy to assist the association next year we would love to hear from them. As each year the floats get more expensive to build, we really need the support and sponsorship to enable us to continue producing great floats. We will shortly be advertising our family Christmas bingo, so please look out for the posters and we hope to see you there.
