Rachel Colwell Independent Study Project Popular Culture and Globalization in the Arab World School for International Training (SIT) May 11, 2009 Colwell 1
“Fusion” Musics and Tunisian Identity in the Age of the Global Stereo Rachel Colwell Independent Study Project Popular Culture and Globalization in the Arab World School for International Training (SIT) May 11, 2009 Colwell 1 Tunisia wears its hybridity on its sleeve. Quite literally, a walk through the residential suburbs of Tunis, La Marsa or La Goullette, proves just that; when walking past a café you are as likely to see a middle-aged man in a smart Italian business suit wearing chechia, a distinctively Tunisian felt hat, as an older gentleman in djellabah, a heavy brown Berber cloak, sporting a “Yankees” cap and pair of sneakers. Superficially, these hybridities between local and inter-state, old and new, and “traditional” and “modern” are everywhere, on the street, on restaurant menus, and in the every-day colloquial Tunisian Arabic, darija, a combination of local Arabic and French with a spattering of Italian. These demonstrations barely scratch the surface though; hybridity is by no means skin-deep in Tunisia. Fusion and hybridity are not patterns that Tunisia or Tunisians put on to go out in the morning and take off at night like the imported second-hand American, British, and Brazilian t-shirts that women of all ages picked up for a few hundred millimes at the Sunday market in La Marsa. Fusion is a deeply rooted ideology, a meaningful pattern of life for Tunisians, whether explicitly or implicitly realized, that has had, and continues to have, profound effect on the development, internalization, and presentation of Tunisian identity throughout. Hybridity characterizes both internal identities among Tunisians and is an important component in Tunisia’s presentation of itself to other Arab states, to Europe, and to the world. -

The Rolling Stones the Rolling Stones Define Rock 'N' Roll
The Rolling Stones The Rolling Stones define rock 'n' roll. They are the longest running act in the history of rock music, having remained wildly popular and prodigiously productive over their 30-year career. The group was formed by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who met as schoolmates in Dartford, Kent. The legend has them bumping into each other on the platform at Dartford railway station, where Keith notices a blues album under Mick's arm. A bond is struck immediately and the pair go on to form a band with a variety of personnel, who eventually include a boogie-woogie pianist called Ian Stewart and a gifted blonde blues guitarist from Cheltenham called Brian Jones (although at the time he is calling himself Elmo Lewis for added authenticity). The best way to chronicle the Rolling Stones' accomplishments is to break it down by year: 1962 The Stones are just three of a growing circle of musicians who were devoted to the music of American artists like Chuck Berry, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and Elmore James. They perform these artists' songs with an almost missionary zeal to further the R&B cause, as well as earn enough money to stay alive. For some months, the impoverished early Stones live in squalor in London's Edith Grove. They beg gigs from older, jazz-tinged luminaries like Chris Barber, Cyril Davies and Alexis Korner, yet such is the Stones' raw energy and rapid development, they soon leave behind the somewhat purist and divided world of the jazz and blues establishment. In July, the Stones take their name from a Muddy Waters song called "Rollin' Stone Blues" and make their live debut at London's Marquee Club (minus Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts). -

Download Free Album Mick Jagger- Primitive Cool Torrent Mick Jagger
download free album Mick Jagger- Primitive Cool torrent Mick Jagger. Mick Jagger is one of the most recognisable and influential British musicians of the modern era. As lead singer and songwriter for The Rolling Stones, a prolific and much sought-after collaborator, a successful producer and a lauded solo artist in his own right, Mick has set and maintained the gold standard for popular performance and creativity for nearly five decades. Michael Philip Jagger was born in 1943, in Dartford, Kent. A good student, Mick attended grammar school and then won a place at the prestigious London School of Economics. As has been well documented, he was a childhood friend of future Stones bandmate, guitarist and co- writer Keith Richards, with whom he lost touch during adolescence, before a chance meeting on the platform of the local railway station in 1960 brought them back together in their late teens. Discovering a shared passion for American rhythm and blues and rock’n’roll, they started hanging out, playing records and then making music. They were playing drop-in, walk-on, pick-up parts in the British blues boom of the early sixties, as part of blues legend Alexis Korner’s scene, when they fell in with guitarist Brian Jones and keyboardist Ian Stewart, joining the former’s band The Rolling Stones in June 1962, where they were soon to be joined by Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman. The rest wasn’t silence. As Stones front man, Mick Jagger became one of the faces and voices of the 1960s. As co-songwriter with Keith Richards, he was responsible for an extraordinary series of hit singles and albums, from ‘Get Off My Cloud’ and ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’, to Beggars Banquet and Exile On Main Street. -

There are film music fans all over the world tonight who wish they could be occupying the seat you are currently in, but you are the lucky ones. What a night this is going to be! The forces that have come together for the show you are about to see are remarkable. There is so much more history represented in tonight’s program than merely the last 35 years. This evening is really about the entire history of film music. We’ll be enjoying the performances of a select few … some of my best friends, who just happen to the masters of modern film music. And we’ll hear the music of those I dearly miss … legends of the art form — the immortals. As I’ve said before, the great thing about celebrating Varèse Sarabande history is that, for us, the spotlight is always on the composers. Tonight is, without question, about them. All of them! We could never represent everyone. That’s been the hardest part about putting together this programme. I started with a list of well over 1500 scores — closer to 2000, actually.
