It G? Pictured on the cover is an archite<:tural rendering of the proposed restoration of the Lowndes County Courthouse} fJayneville. The restoration project is being fundeq';9y matcl1ing grants from the Economic Development Administra tion} U.S. Department-of Commerce and local funds. The original Greek ReVival courthouse was built in 1856 consisting of a two-story brick structure with vaulted brick ceilings and a front portico with four classic doric columns and curving cast iron staircases. A 1905 remodeling ! resulted in the removal of the front portico and stairs and the additidn of a domed cupola and office wings. ' The restoration project will include the rebuilding of the front porv~co and twin curving stairca§es. The 1905 office wings will be removed and a new office annex will be constructed. / ,,0 Restoration ofthe second floor courtroom will include,replacing4he pressed tin ceiling and refinishing the original I judges' benCh. An old corner cell, used to detaIn prisoners before and during their trials, will b~ retained. The courthouse was plac~ed O~, the National Register of Historical Places in 1971.yYith the proposed restoration, the Lowndes County Courth6iIse will justifi~bly be returned to its position of promilJence as a landmark in the sta.te.
