The Jesuit Mission and Jihi no Kumi (Confraria de Misericórdia) Takashi GONOI Professor Emeritus, University of Tokyo Introduction During the 80-year period starting when the Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier and his party arrived in Kagoshima in August of 1549 and propagated their Christian teachings until the early 1630s, it is estimated that a total of 760,000 Japanese converted to Chris- tianity. Followers of Christianity were called “kirishitan” in Japanese from the Portu- guese christão. As of January 1614, when the Tokugawa shogunate enacted its prohibi- tion of the religion, kirishitan are estimated to have been 370,000. This corresponds to 2.2% of the estimated population of 17 million of the time (the number of Christians in Japan today is estimated at around 1.1 million with Roman Catholics and Protestants combined, amounting to 0.9% of total population of 127 million). In November 1614, 99 missionaries were expelled from Japan. This was about two-thirds of the total number in the country. The 45 missionaries who stayed behind in hiding engaged in religious in- struction of the remaining kirishitan. The small number of missionaries was assisted by brotherhoods and sodalities, which acted in the missionaries’ place to provide care and guidance to the various kirishitan communities in different parts of Japan. During the two and a half centuries of harsh prohibition of Christianity, the confraria (“brother- hood”, translated as “kumi” in Japanese) played a major role in maintaining the faith of the hidden kirishitan. An overview of the state of the kirishitan faith in premodern Japan will be given in terms of the process of formation of that faith, its actual condition, and the activities of the confraria. -

SOLI, SOLII ŞI CĂLĂTORI CHINEZI ÎN SPAŢIUL EURASIATIC Scurtă privire istorică (II) ANNA EVA BUDURA Începând de la sfârşitul secolului al XVI-lea, s-a intensificat interesul puterilor din partea occidentală a Eurasiei pentru cunoaşterea întinsului şi fabulosului Imperiu Chinez, moment în care şi curtea imperială chineză a simţit nevoia însuşirii unor cunoştinţe ale ştiinţelor exacte pentru modernizarea observaţiilor astronomice, cartografierii teritoriului şi a apărării naţionale. Mediatorii acestor doua interese au devenit preoţii misionari iezuiţi cu pregătire specială în domeniile de interes ale Curţii Imperiale chineze. Matematicieni, astronomi, cartografi, membrii ai forurilor ştiinţifice franceze, italiene, belgiene, germane, aceşti preoţi pentru a-şi duce la bun sfârşit sarcinile de stat şi cele de propovăduire a credinţei catolice au înţeles să se integreze în societatea chineză, au învăţat limba ţării, şi-au însuşit elementele culturii şi civilizaţiei chineze, au acceptat obiceiurile tradiţionale şi s-au angajat în traducerea operelor fundamentale ale gândirii filosofice chineze, ale literaturii şi culturii chineze. Rezultatele acestui mod de apropiere de lumea chineză au fost benefice atât Chinei, cât şi ţărilor occidentale de baştină ale iezuiţilor, chiar mai mult, culturii întregii Europe, deoarece au contribuit la îmbogăţirea sferei de cunoaştere şi la lărgirea orizontului de referinţă ale intelectualităţii acestora. Datorită eforturilor depuse de misionarii iezuiti, aceste opere clasice chineze traduse au devenit mesagerii civilizaţiei chineze, au pus bazele relaţiilor culturale ale Chinei cu ţările Europei şi au creat premisele naşterii sinologiei - ştiinţei cercetării civilizaţiei chineze. Primul misionar iezuit consemnat în analele istorice chineze a fost Matteo Ricci (1552-1619). El a sosit în China în anul 1583, fiind primit cu multă bunăvoinţă de împăratul dinastiei Ming, Zhu Yujun, (nume postum Shen Zong) (1573-1620), datorită cunoştinţelor sale din domeniile matematicii, algebrei, astronomiei şi cartografierii. -

ENSAIO BIBLIOGRÁFICO 125 José Raimundo Noras | Centro de História (FLUL) e Centro de Investigação Joaquim Veríssimo Serrão (CIJVS) No presente ensaio pretendemos analisar a principal produção acadé- mica relativa à formação da identidade cultural do Tibete e de que modo, mais recentemente, esta se tem assumido como reivindicação nacional. Consideramos, à partida, que tal afirmação de identidade cultural tibetana deve ser compreendida em relação ao desenvolvimento dos impérios chi- nês e mongol, entre outros intervenientes, mais esporádicos, na evolução política e cultural das sociedades da Ásia Central. Em termos cronológicos, não propomos balizas estanques, abordamos a «questão do Tibete» – para utilizar a expressão de Tom Grunfeld1 – na perspetiva da longa duração, isto é da formação do Império tibetano nos séculos VII e VIII à recente incorporação do território na República Popular da China, no século XX. Não adotamos qualquer posição dogmática no debate historiográfico acerca das relações históricas entre o Tibete e a China, nas suas mais variadas for- mulações enquanto entidades políticas. Aliás, pretendemos dar conta desse debate, apresentando as duas perspetivas em confronto. No decurso deste ensaio propomos assim, em primeiro lugar, uma análise à historiografia produzida sobre o Tibete, analisando as «histórias do Tibete» mais recentes, bem como trabalhos «clássicos» neste âmbito. Esco- lhemos obras que apresentam uma análise da «questão tibetana» na lógica da longa duração e que, de alguma forma, abordem a relação do Tibete com os diversos impérios da região. No segundo momento, concentramos a nossa análise em textos historiográficos com maior especificidade, como por exemplo os que se concentram na evolução das elites tibetanas no século XVIII; nas relações culturais entre o Tibete, a Mongólia e a China; ou no período «moderno», isto é, contemporâneo da história Tibetana. -
