Act of Spiritual Communion "Jesus, we believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. We love You above all things and desire to receive You into our hearts, minds, souls and bodies. Many of our brothers and sisters cannot now receive You sacramentally because of illness, or violence in their homelands, or because there is no priest and Mass can be celebrated only rarely. Come spiritually into those hearts. We embrace You, already there, and unite ourselves to You and to our brothers and sisters. Never permit us to be separated from You or from them. Amen.” Father James Hammer, OFM Cap - Please pray for the repose of the soul of Father James Hammer, OFM Cap, who passed away on May 12 at St. Clare Friary in Yonkers, NY. Father Hammer was a member of the first Capuchin fraternity at St. Joseph’s Parish in Portland from 1977-1984, and was again at St. Joseph’s from 2005 until 2010, when the community withdrew from the parish.

Seeking God/God seeking you - You are invited…… Some members of the parish have been gathering at 7:00 PM on a zoom link on Thursday evenings to discuss Fr. Jim Martin’s latest book “Learning to Pray”. You are welcome to join. Contact the Parish Office if you are interested or for more information.

That you think about prayer, come to Mass in person or online or even read this bulletin is an indication that God is seeking you, for it is God who has given you the desire to come to Mass or read the bulletin. If you are not interested in joining the group, you might just want to get the book and read it.

Our parish regularly offers opportunities to learn more about our faith, to join others in praying and in living out our faith. That is the role of a parish, to be an active community of faith, not just a “place to go to Mass.” Please think about ways you might respond to the opportunities being offered. Let us know if you have other ideas of things you are interested in supporting. Blessings and Welcome

For the past seven months or so Erika Allan and Ian Edwards have been journeying toward a commitment to Christ and membership in our church and parish. Each week they have met with our parish RCIA Team (Jim Masi, Lori Arsenault, Dick Niles and Fr Paul) to discuss the Sunday readings and other topics about Christian faith and the Church. This Sun- day evening they will both be baptized, confirmed and receive First Eucharist at the 5:00 PM Mass. They are both ex- traordinarily fine young adults. Please welcome them into our community and its various ministries and activities. Con- gratulations and blessings to Erika her sponsor Jan Libby and Ian and his sponsor Jake Foster.

Today we celebrate Pentecost, the gift of the Holy Spirit to those first followers of Jesus. That SAME Spirit is given to each of you in Baptism, Confirmation and in our celebrations of the Eucharist. On that first Pentecost day the gift that was needed and given was the ability for people of all nations to hear the Apostles and others proclaim Christ. The promise is that each faith community is given the gifts its needs to proclaim Christ (in word and deed) in their time. The gifts are given to ALL the members of the Community, to each of you, gathered here at OLH. That means that each of us comes not only to receive grace here, but to bring grace, to share the gifts we have with others. That is how God is present here and now.

What gifts are you bringing? We are looking forward to a year of renewal, growth and action this year. What is your part in our parish life and proclamation of Christ? www.ladyofhopemaine.org 06 Pentecost Sunday New policy on Mass attendance.

• We have seen increasing numbers of people at Masses these last few weeks. This is a good thing. Thanks. • Beginning next week (June 4-5) we will try a “no advance reservation” policy. We are making this change for two reasons: some of you have asked for it; others have objected to the registration requirement. • The CDC still requires all attending to sign-in upon arrival, giving name and contact phone number. • Our Welcome Ministers will assist you in signing in and with seating to maintain the required social distancing (6’) between individuals or family groups. • Signing in and getting seating takes time. It is important that you arrive 10-15 minutes early. We cannot delay the start of Masses. In addition, arriving early is a courtesy to others and a kindness to your neighbors who are giving their time to the Welcome Ministry. Seating people once Mass starts is quite disruptive to those already in place and to those who may be reading or speaking at Mass. • This is key: once our seating capacity is reached for aa Mass, no one can be admitted. A sign will be posted on the door and the door will be locked. Please do not stand and pound on the door to be let in. If the door is locked, there is no seat available for you. • Our ability to continue to move ahead with this easing of restrictions is in your hands. • If this change results in delays in getting Mass started or other major problems, we will have no choice except to return to the advance reservation system. • This CAN work with your thoughtful and generous cooperation. Parish planning process continues. The steps in the process set by our parish planning and discernment process are:

A review and revision of expected costs of repairs and maintenance of our buildings. Given sharply rising costs, we can expect increases in our estimates as well. • Planning for a gathering of all parish ministries (“Ministry Convocation”) in early September. We hope that ministries can return to a more normal schedule of activities. People who have expressed interest in existing or new ministries need to be “welcomed aboard.” • Examination of weekend Mass attendance as we return closer to“ normal.” How many Masses do we really need? How many people do we have to serve in the necessary ministries of Lector, Eucharistic Minister, Welcome Minis try, etc? The diocese is encouraging an evaluation of existing Mass schedules. Masses with very light attendance should not be continued if there is adequate room at other Masses. • Planning for expansion of existing ministries and creation of new parish efforts. One question that has been raised is “how can we be more helpful and welcoming to younger families? How does every adult in the parish consider their responsibility in the faith formation of our youth? This is the mission of the Parish – to reach out and serve our community. These preferences are also expressed in our Parish goals and vision. The future is not just a time; it is the event of God who is coming towards us. History has its final purpose in which all created relations come to their fulfilment in Christ. We are entrusted with this saving knowledge and asked in our own time to live this future time, ‘in the light.’ The future is not just a time; it is the event of God who is coming towards us. History has its ‘telos’ its final purpose in which all created relations come to their fulfilment in Christ. We are entrusted with this saving knowledge and asked in our own time to live this future time, ‘in the light.’ What does the Lord ask me to see? What is the knowledge and the desire he wishes to place in my heart? Speak to the Lord about your fears and doubts; also, about your desires and longing.

Women’s Day of Reflection Sign up for our Women’s Day of Reflection, scheduled for Saturday, May 22d, and sponsored by our ACTS Ministry, has been a huge success, filling all 30 reservations three weeks early and forcing the start of a waiting list. It is wonderful to see such enthusiasm! It is quite unfortunate that the pandemic forced the cancellation of our last 2 women’s ACTS retreats and our last men’s ACTS retreat. We are cautiously optimistic that we will be able to hold our next men’s ACTS retreat in person later this year, from Thursday Nov 18 through Sunday Nov 21, and our next women’s ACTS retreat a year from now, from Thursday May 12 through Sunday May 15, 2022. You may want to mark those dates on your calendar now. www.ladyofhopemaine.org Our Lady of Hope Parish 07 Dear Friends,

I want to share with you some wise words written by Fr. Lou Phillips, our neighboring pastor. I’ve adapted them a bit to fit our circumstances (and the dates I got my shots).

Fr. Lou and I are making an appeal to all of you to get your Covid vaccine as soon as possible. You can make an appointment, or simply drop into vaccination sites. Doses are going unused. We are fortunate to live in Maine where vaccines are readily available. On a personal note, I’ve been fully vaccinated since Good Friday.

Why is this so important to us? Because we all long to get back to normal in our churches. Once we are all vaccinated, we can return to “worship as usual.” This can happen as quickly as the beginning of this summer if we all cooperate. Why is this so important? It is a moral obligation.

On a larger scale, we all have a moral obligation to all our brothers and sisters to achieve what is popularly called “herd immunity.” Personally, I’m not crazy about the term, but it makes a lot of sense. It’s the reason why we no longer fear smallpox, mumps, measles, tuberculosis and whopping cough. The science works. So, getting the vaccine is an act of charity toward others—moving beyond my selfishness and placing the common good over and above myself. To put it simply, by taking the vaccine, you are actively being “pro -life.” Please, be truly pro-life and get the vaccine.

I can’t help but reflect upon my own childhood memories when, as a kid, I failed to finish my dinner. I was told about the starving people halfway around the globe. Well, today there are thousands of people who are literally dying from Covid 19 in India and so many other third-world nations for lack of precious vaccines that we Americans are not using. How sad, and how selfish on our part. What a tragedy.

ALL Covid vaccines have been deemed MORALLY ACCEPTABLE BY THE UNITED STATES BISHOPS CONFERENCE AND POPE FRANCIS. Unfortunately, Catholic Radio and some “rogue priests” have inferred otherwise. They are clearly wrong and misguided. Please know, that your moral obligation to receive the vaccine supersedes any other superficial concerns you may have.

Lastly, for those of you who haven’t yet returned to actual, live Mass, please get vaccinated and then, come back. We need to gather together in person. We do and will provide livestream Masses from St. Pius for those who are truly unable to come to Mass in-person. These are not meant to be a substitute for those who are able to attend. I expect that at some point before long we will be ending the practice of providing Communion outside the church doors after the 9:00 AM Mass and will be able to return to regular home visits for those who are home-bound or in health care facilities.

The social distancing rules do place significant restrictions on how many people we can seat at Mass. I am hopeful that as we become fully vaccinated those rules will be loosened or even removed. Please, get vaccinated. And when fully vaccinated , please come back to church and join us once again if you haven’t already. A warm welcome awaits you.

Fr. Paul (with Fr Lou)

PS And I remember what a relief it was and difference it made in the early 1950s when the polio vaccine be- came available; children were able to go out to play again and parents did not have to fear their child may be hit by a life-changing disease.

Words of Welcome and Invitation “Becoming a Welcoming Community” Pope Francis has said that “there is no room for homophobia in the church.” Many of us may have questions or uncer- tainties about these issues. We invite you to join us in a “safe place” discussion on Tuesday June 1 at 7 PM at St. Pius Hall on Ocean Ave. If you wish to attend by zoom that is possible as well, Contact the Parish Office and we will send you an invitation and a zoom link. Our conversation will be based on Fr. Jim Martin’s book Building a Bridge. Fr Martin invites us all to talk with and listen to each other. Let us do that and in the process become a more welcoming and inclusive parish community. Similar events or gatherings are being planned in some other Maine parishes.

“Building a Bridge describes the ‘culture of encounter’ that Pope Francis frequently espouses. In order to construct this bridge, those on each side of the divide must presume the goodness and worth of the other and be motivated by the common desire to meet each other on the way. With a heart sympathetic to the suffering that LGBTQ people of faith have experienced and a love for the church, Fr. Martin describes how this encounter can be a fruitful and liberating journey for those on both sides.” John Stowe, Bishop of Lexington, Ky.

www.ladyofhopemaine.org 08 Pentecost Sunday Screen Time and St. Ignatius By Shemaiah Gonzalez

It’s happened again.

I have spent 30… 45… 60 minutes on social media.

I’m not sure why I do it.

I logged on to see how my old friend from high school was doing, and then I remembered my Kindergarten teacher and wanted to see how she was, and then before I knew it, I was spying on my college boyfriend’s profile. Scroll, refresh, click, repeat.

After an hour of this, I don’t feel any smarter, wiser, content, or con- nected. I just feel empty. So I grab the remote to turn on the news: politics, vaccines, statistics, car crashes. I’m not sure I know more or less about the world when I finally let the screen go dark. Believe it or not, St. Ignatius knew a little something about this feeling. His vice? Adventure stories. He loved to read romantic and epic tales like those of El Cid and Camelot (Carey Wallace, Stories of the ). Sometimes I think this may not be too far removed from the gossip and reading-between-the-lines on social media.

Then St. Ignatius began to read Scripture and stories of the saints, and he noticed something. When he read the adven- ture stories, he felt empty and sad. When he read about Jesus and the saints, he felt at peace and joyful. St. Ignatius wrote in his autobiography that he “learned by experience that one train of thought left him sad, the other joyful. This was his first reasoning on spiritual matters.”

I think about this when I scroll and click. Why am I doing something that leaves me feeling empty and sad, fearful and jealous? This is not from God.

St. Paul knew about this too. He wrote to his friends in Galatia that if something leaves us full of hatred, jealous, angry, and makes us want to leave community, that isn’t from God. But we will know we are in harmony with God when something fills us with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22–23)

Self-control. It comes back to that, doesn’t it?

I think St. Ignatius understood this too. After years of indulgence, he found God. He knew he needed discipline so that he could get to know God better and hear God’s voice. He developed the Spiritual Exercises, a way to guide himself (and us) to cut through the distractions and have a deeper relationship with God.

Today I deleted the social media apps from my phone. I resisted the impulse to watch the news. Instead, I sat down in my big comfy chair with my Bible to read a bit of Scripture. I prayed through the Examen, one of the tools St. Ignatius gave us to guide us to a better relationship with God. I saw God everywhere: in my quiet after- noon walk, in the lunchtime conversation with my sons, and in the good work I finished that morning. When I stood up from my chair, I felt stronger—not defeated and empty as I had when I left the screens, but full of peace to pass on to someone else. www.ignatianspirituality.com

The Ignatian Way for the Ignatian Year

We are now beginning an Ignatian Year for the Society of Jesus and all who follow the ways of Ignatian spirituality. May 20, 2021 is the 500th anniversary of St. Ignatius Loyola’s injury during the Battle of Pamplona, which ultimately led to his conversion from soldier to . We here at IgnatianSpirituality.com will be celebrating the year through its conclusion on the Feast of St. Ignatius, July 31, 2022.

First up, we invite you to learn more about the elements of Ignatian spirituality through the Ignatian Way series. This video series, based on materials written by Brian Grogan, SJ, of the Irish Jesuits, has already been a popular feature of our site. But now take advantage of our new e-mail series to accompany the videos. Each week’s message will include a link to one of the Ignatian Way videos, along with related content for further exploration of the themes.

To sign up to receive material from the Ignatian Way series, go to www.ignatianspirtuality.com and click on “The Ignatian Way for the Ignatian Year.”

www.ladyofhopemaine.org Our Lady of Hope Parish 09 Pentecost Astonishment

A fundamental element of Pentecost is astonishment. Our God is a God of astonishment; this we know. No one expected anything more from the disciples: after Jesus’ death they were a small, insignificant group of defeated orphans of their Master. There occurred instead an unexpected event that astounded: the people were astonished because each of them heard the disciples speaking in their own tongues, telling of the great works of God (cf. Acts 2:6–7, 11). The Church born at Pentecost is an astounding community because, with the force of her arrival from God, a new message is proclaimed—the resurrection of Christ—with a new language, the universal one of love. A new proclamation: Christ lives, he is risen. A new language: the language of love. The disciples are adorned with power from above and speak with courage. Only minutes before, they all were cowardly, but now they speak with courage and candor, with the freedom of the Holy Spirit.

Thus the Church is called into being forever, capable of astounding while proclaiming to all that Jesus Christ has con- quered death, that God’s arms are always open, that his patience is always there awaiting us in order to heal us, to for- give us. The risen Jesus bestowed his Spirit on the Church for this very mission. Take note: if the Church is alive, she must always surprise. It is incumbent upon the living Church to astound. A Church that is unable to astound is a Church that is weak, sick, dying, and that needs admission to the intensive care unit as soon as possible! —Excerpted from Walking with Jesus by Pope Francis From Church to God By Tim Muldoon

It takes a great deal of slow, careful, thoughtful work to learn a language. First there must be the example of someone fluent in that language who acts as a model. Next, there must be careful listening, repeating of sounds that are foreign, and memorizing words and their unfamiliar nuances. Over time one builds small sentences to convey basic meanings. Months, even years later, one grows in the ability to write and speak sentences to convey ever more complex ideas: from “I like you” to “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”

We live in an age that suggests that the strictures of church distract one from the spiritual life—that church is all about rules, and spirituality is all about life and love. That opinion is wrong. Church—by which I mean the community of peo- ple rooted in a history of worshiping God—is indeed governed by rules, but so is language, and both take hard work to master. But the mastery, the virtuosity, the poetry, is liberating in its beauty. Immersion in the life of the Church is an immersion in the life of Christ writ large over human history. It demands careful learning. For that reason, early Chris- tians designated the period known as the catechumenate as a many-years-long initiation into the life of the Church. Learn the grammar of the Church’s life, its wisdom went, and you will be free. God is there in the unknowing; God is there in the learning; God is there in the deepening of wisdom, the poetry of the Church’s life. Universal Apostolic Preferences of the Society of Jesus 2019-2029 This month we began the International Ignatian Year 2021 – 2022, the 500th anniversary of interruption of the life St. Ignatius. A French cannonball shattering his leg began the process of his change from a man concerned with honor and glory and fame to a person alive with the love of God and a desire to “do great things” for Christ. Many people – Jesuits and others – have followed the path God opened to him. This year is not only a celebration of the past but an call to God to help us all see things anew in Christ. As this year of celebration approached the Society of Jesus summarized the call of the Spirit in four Universal Apostolic Preferences for the Society of Jesus and all connected schools, parishes and other works over the next decade. These were identi- fied through a fruitful process of discernment lasting almost two years. All Jesuits were invited to take part and many representational mission partners. The process concluded with a confirmation from Pope Francis in a special meeting with Fr. Sosa. The 4 Preferences are:

1. To show the way to God through the Spiritual Exercises and discernment; 2. To walk with the poor, the outcasts of the world, those whose dignity has been violated, in a mission of reconcil- iation and justice; 3. To accompany young people in the creation of a hope-filled future; 4. To collaborate in the care of our Common Home
