JUIZ DE DIREITO ANA MARIA ROSA MARTINS GOMES, notificada do despacho com a ref. nº 122584756, vem, em cumprimento do mesmo, apresentar a sua CONTESTAÇÃO o que faz nos termos e com os seguintes fundamentos: 1. A presente acção constitui um infundado e inaceitável ataque à liberdade de expressão da Requerida. 2. A Requerida, como é facto público e notório, é uma diplomata e política portuguesa, tendo há pouco tempo abandonado o Parlamento Europeu onde esteve de 2004 a 2019 e tem-se destacado, nacional e internacionalmente, na denúncia e combate à corrupção e à “lavagem de dinheiro”. 3. Parece desnecessário realçar a importância de a Requerida poder exprimir livremente as suas opiniões, por mais contundentes que sejam, tendo em conta que Portugal, para além de consagrar constitucionalmente a liberdade de expressão, é também signatário da Convenção Europeia dos Direito Humanos que, como é [email protected] · [email protected] · (+351) 213863771/86 Rua Rodrigo da Fonseca 24, 4º Dto · 1250-193 Lisboa jurisprudência constante do Tribunal Europeu dos Direitos Humanos, confere um lugar matricial à liberdade de expressão numa sociedade democrática. 4. A Requerida não tem rigorosamente nada de pessoal contra a Eng. Isabel dos Santos nem teve qualquer intenção de ofender os seus direitos de personalidade e nunca pretendeu ou procurou difamar, caluniar, rebaixar ou humilhar a Requerente. 5. Mas a Requerente não é, como modestamente se apresenta, “uma empresária, desenvolvendo a sua atividade profissional em diversos setores, regulados e não regulados, nomeadamente nos setores das telecomunicações, banca, energia, indústria e retalho, em Angola e em Portugal, mas também em outros países”. 8. E as referências, constantes da petição inicial, de que “a Requerente tem-se destacado, ao longo dos anos, no desenvolvimento da sua atividade e, tendo, inclusive, sido considerada em 2014, a empreendedora “número um” em África” ou que “em 2017, a revista “New African Magazine” divulgou a lista das 100 pessoas mais influentes de África, desse ano, e a Autora destacou-se na categoria de “Negócios e Finanças”, não esclarecem de facto quem é a Requerente. 9. Impugna-se, assim, tudo o alegado nos art.ºs 1.º a 5.º e 12.º da Petição Inicial e especialmente no art.º 5.º da Petição Inicial, isto é, que seja “do conhecimento comum” que a Requerente seja “uma profissional com reconhecida competência”. 10. A Requerida tem a responsabilidade, como cidadã informada e ex-deputada no Parlamento Europeu, de não ser conivente e de não deixar os portugueses continuarem a ser enganados pela Requerente e pelos advogados, profissionais de [email protected] · [email protected] · (+351) 213863771/86 Rua Rodrigo da Fonseca 24, 4º Dto · 1250-193 Lisboa Relações Públicas e outros meios que a mesma pode comprar e contratar para projectar a imagem de primeira bilionária de África em resultado da sua actividade empresarial. 11. Porque essa imagem não corresponde à realidade. 12. Está a Requerida absolutamente convicta, tal como muitos portugueses e angolanos, que a origem da fortuna da Requerente é resultado do abuso

    chapter 14 African Women Large-Scale Entrepreneurs: Cases from Angola, Nigeria and Ghana Miriam Siun, Akinyinka Akinyoade and Ewurabena Quaye Introduction This paper critically examines the road to prosperity for three African wom- en entrepreneurs of large-scale businesses within male-dominated fields of portfolio – investments, oil production and construction. Angolan Isabel Dos Santos, Nigeria’s Folorunsho Alakija and Ghana’s Dr. Theresa Oppong-Beeko are highly ranked among the wealthiest women in Africa. In fact, Dos Santos and Alakija are positioned as number eight and number thirteen in terms of personal wealth on the continent irrespective of gender, as contained on the African section of Forbes’ annual list of the world’s billionaires.1 Dos Santos, Alakija and Dr Oppong-Beeko have firmly established themselves and their companies in their respective industries, despite the challenges women face to enter these spaces. In some quarters, their individual trajectories to wealth calls meritocracy into question, as claims of patrimonialism and corruption is sometimes used to taint their accomplishments. This necessitates further studies on the obstacles for African women to become large-scale entrepre- neurs without personal connections to influential people/high profile leader- ship. In conclusion, this paper warns against uncritical praise of success stories on the basis of gender and takes a class-based approach to the study of women and entrepreneurship in Africa. In the mid-to-late twentieth century, Africa was afflicted with political and economic turmoil that made the continent unattractive to both domestic and foreign investors. Failure of most of its countries in attracting foreign invest- ment, coupled with capital flight as domestic savers sought investment op- portunities in more stable economies abroad further dampened the economic outlook (Mbaku, 2013).

    Anne Pitcher & Edalina Rodrigues Sanches The Paradox of Isabel dos Santos: State Capitalism, Dynastic Politics, and Gender Hostility in a Resource-Rich, Authoritarian Country ABSTRACT Throughout the world, the sons and daughters of many state leaders attract media attention for their exploits. Like other famous children of politicians, Isabel dos Santos, the daughter of José Eduardo dos Santos, the former president of Angola (1979-2017), is the object of much media scrutiny regarding her investments and lavish spending habits. We rely on a systematic study of newspaper articles by Angolan and international media, readers’ comments, social media and websites to examine the conflicting portrayals of Isabel from 2010 to 2018. This period covers celebratory depictions of Isabel during the growth of her business empire to her dismissal as head of Sonangol after her father left the presidency. We argue that the change in portrayals of Isabel over time offers insight into the dimensions of dynastic politics in authoritarian settings. Whereas her position as wealthy presidential daughter ironically reinforced patriarchal political oligarchy, her downfall demonstrates the limits of hereditary politics in Angola. Isabel dos Santos - daughter of President of Angola, Mr. José Eduardo dos Santos - had her first business venture as a "fake" partner of the Miami Beach bar in Luanda. She was brought into the business in 1997, since "the owner, Rui Barata, was having issues with health inspectors and taxmen. His solution: bringing in Isabel dos Santos, then 24, as his partner, with the idea, contemporaries say, that her name would keep pesky government regulators at bay. Her initial investment was negligible, according to a source with knowledge of the deal, and the restaurant thrived: Sixteen years later it’s still a weekend hot spot."1 2. Isabel dos Santos' subsequent venture into the diamonds business is contextualised in the following paragraphs. 3. In 1992 the government in Angola, led by MPLA, hired a group of former South African soldiers, who styled themselves as Executive Outcomes (EO), to at first advise, and later, assume operational command of the military campaign against UNITA during the civil war. At that time, UNITA controlled large territories of Angola's hinterland, including the diamond-rich Lundas region, which was their most important source of financing. MPLA turned to Russian-Israeli arms and diamond dealers to buy weapons and specialised tracking technology to bring an end to the murderous campaign of Jonas Savimbi, the leader of UNITA.2 They were, at different times and circumstances, Arkadi Gaydamak, Lev Leviev, Pierre Falcone, Sylvain Goldberg and Ehud Laniado.
