Year 5 – Autumn Term Frozen!

With a geography focus, this topic is a journey of adventure to the most extreme regions of our planet: the Arctic and the . Year 5 will uncover some of the amazing natural wonders of our world.

They will delve into the lives of the intrepid explorers who conquered the challenges of these harsh environments and discover the fate of those who were not so fortunate.

They will find out how people and animals cope in these hostile yet beautiful places and discover how modern life is changing these places forever.

Humankind versus nature - let the exploration commence!

The Antarctic region is found in the Southern Hemisphere and it is the world’s fifth largest continent. It is covered in an ice sheet that is up to 4.8km thick. It is the coldest, driest, highest and windiest continent on Earth. Temperatures can reach -89 ºc. There is no precipitation and wind speeds can reach 80km per hour in some areas.
