Brewster GMOA 54.480 Anna Richards was the sixth child of Anna Matlock and William Trost Richards (1833-1905), the I~ -t:t~r a well-known painter of New England and England. Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, Anna livecl' 'With her family in Great Britain between 1878 and 1880, where her father's watercolors and oils had gr~ ~t , success. While there, Anna began painting with her father, which she continued to do after the fa ~ 11 Y sd return to the United States. She also attended the Cowles Art School in Boston and in New York ~orke with John LaFarge and William Merritt Chase. During the 1890s and early 1900s Anna again traveled and lived in Europe, mainly England and P"""~ ris .. where she studied with Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. In 1905, while living and w o·~ ,_ ng m London, she married William Tenney Brewster, an English professor at Barnard College. The cou ~le settled in Westchester County, New York, traveling frequently to Europe and North Africa, as we ll ~8 throughout the United States. Like her father and many other American painters at the turn of the century, Anna worked directly f' ..-om nature, making small pencil and oil sketches which formed the basis for her final, large-scale wor<~· Her earlier watercolors show her father's influence, but gradually her style became more like the contemporary work of the tonalists and early impressionists, her brushwork became looser and b·~ ader and her colors warmer. -

From the Warden: 2000 in review The last year has been another year of remarkable achievement The Foundation Studies Program (FSP) has had record student at Trinity. As well as securing good — in many cases, outstanding numbers in 2000 — at present there are 671 students preparing — academic results, our resident students have: for undergraduate study, and (in a trial program) over 60 preparing • won the Holmes Shield for women's intercollegiate sport; for postgraduate study. Despite our record numbers, steering • won the Cowan Cup for men's intercollegiate sport for the Foundation Studies through a very uncertain environment in third year in a row, the first time any College has done this; international education is a major challenge for the leadership and of the College. • won the new Intercollegiate Shield for the Arts. The Greek and Latin halves of the Church each possessed their own independent liturgical and cultural customs which were part of the dispute that lead to the Great Schism, effectively separating the Church into independent Greek and Latin sides. While the West had retained liturgical expressions that differed from the majority Western Rite (in the form of the Italo-Albanian Catholic Church, which remained in communion with Rome after the official break with Constantinople), the Christian East was exclusively composed of Churches celebrating the Byzantine Rite for approximately nine hundred years. This changed in the latter half of the nineteenth century with the conversion of Julius Joseph Overbeck to the Russian Orthodox Church in London. -

The Association for the Study of Literature and Environment The ASLE Online Bibliography, 2000–2010 Editor's Note “Have you read . ?” “You should read. .” “Can anyone recommend good articles, essays, poems, or books about . ?” Sharing of bibliographical references must rank among the most frequent activities in any academic community. Informal exchanges of bibliographic information occur at every conference and on every e-mail list. On the listserv of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE), from its inception to today, long-established netiquette has called for folks who have posted requests for bibliographical references to compile the suggestions and post them back to the group. Listserv archives were (and are) available and searchable, but finding bibliographic information in those archives is not a trivial task. And in the early 1990s, academic bibliographies such as the MLA International Bibliography did not index many sources of interest to the emerging interdisciplinary field of ecocriticism. Accordingly, from 1990 to 1997, ASLE produced annual or biennial annotated bibliographies. Working with volunteer bibliographers, the editors of the ASLE Bibliography compiled entries in MLA format, accompanied by one-sentence abstracts, paragraph-length summaries, and keywords from a custom list of terms designed to reflect the work and concerns of ecocriticism. Those invaluable bibliographies were printed in an 8.5 x 11” format and sold to members to cover printing costs. Creating an annual, printed bibliography with few resources and a volunteer staff amounted to a Herculean task, and the fruits of that labor could be distributed only once every year or two. So, when the job of editor opened up in the late 90s, I began exploring with ASLE’s Executive Council the possibility of creating an online bibliography. -
