Introduction Welcome to the Flagstaff Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. We would like to acquaint you with who we are and with some of our history and beliefs. This publication introduces us, but it is only a beginning. Please feel free to ask us any questions you might have. Basic beliefs and practices of Friends When Friends are asked, “What do Quakers believe?” they may hem and haw as they search for an honest answer. Quakers have no written doctrine to which all are expected to adhere. There are, however, generally held beliefs among Quakers; a person who is unable to agree with most of them may not feel completely at home in a group of Friends. Quakerism began in the seventeenth century with George Fox. Then, as now, the Quaker faith was based on the belief that God’s will is continually and directly revealed to every person who seeks it. For this reason, Quakers are also sometimes called seekers. Although it is difficult to describe the will of God in words, Quakers refer to it as the Light, and devote their attention to minding the Light or seeking the Light. God is also said to speak to the condition of those who pay attention. ___________________________________________________ The majority of this booklet was prepared by the Fort Collins Friends Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. They have expressly waived all rights to their material, but asked that they be referenced appropriately. The Experience of Early Friends By Andrew Wright 2005 Historical Context The world of the early Friends was in the midst of radical change. The Renaissance in Europe had strengthened the role of science and reason in the Western world. The individual’s power to understand and make sense of reality on their own was challenging the authority of the Catholic Church. Until recently there had been only one church in Western Europe. Martin Luther’s “95 Theses” that critiqued the Catholic Church is generally seen as the beginning of the Reformation when western Christianity splintered into a plethora of various “protestant” churches. In order to fully understand the significance of the Reformation we must realize that political authority and religious authority were very closely aligned at this time in history. Political authority was used to enforce religious orthodoxy as well as to punish those who expressed unconventional views. Meditating on the intensity of feeling that many have today about issues like abortion or gay/ lesbian rights or end of life issues might begin to help us to understand the intensity of feeling that people experienced around religious issues during the Reformation. Many people felt like only the triumph of their religious group could secure their right to religious expression or save them from persecution. The notion of separation of church and state only began to become a possibility much later. The English Reformation and Civil War In England, the reformation developed a little later than in Germany and in a slightly different way. In 1534, King Henry VIII declared the Church of England independent of the Roman Catholic papacy and hierarchy. -

Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway Delaware Chapter 3.0 Intrinsic Resource Assessment The following Intrinsic Resource Assessment chapter outlines the intrinsic resources found along the corridor. The National Scenic Byway Program defines an intrinsic resource as the cultural, historical, archeological, recreational, natural or scenic qualities or values along a roadway that are necessary for designation as a Scenic Byway. Intrinsic resources are features considered significant, exceptional and distinctive by a community and are recognized and expressed by that community in its comprehensive plan to be of local, regional, statewide or national significance and worthy of preservation and management (60 FR 26759). Nationally significant resources are those that tend to draw travelers or visitors from regions throughout the United States. National Scenic Byway CMP Point #2 An assessment of the intrinsic qualities and their context (the areas surrounding the intrinsic resources). The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway offers travelers a significant amount of Historical and Cultural resources; therefore, this CMP is focused mainly on these resource categories. The additional resource categories are not ignored in this CMP; they are however, not at the same level of significance or concentration along the corridor as the Historical and Cultural resources. The resources represented in the following chapter provide direct relationships to the corridor story and are therefore presented in this chapter. A map of the entire corridor with all of the intrinsic resources displayed can be found on Figure 6. Figures 7 through 10 provide detailed maps of the four (4) corridors segments, with the intrinsic resources highlighted. This Intrinsic Resource Assessment is organized in a manner that presents the Primary (or most significant resources) first, followed by the Secondary resources. -

Quaker Attitudes towards Signs and Wonders I T is quite clear that not all early Quakers expressed their belief through signs, although a surprisingly large Inumber of Friends (many of whom remain unknown) did do so. One reason why so many were involved in the various types of signs and wonders may, perhaps, lie in the general support for this type of expression given by Fox, Nayler, Burrough, Farnworth, Howgill, Hubberthorne, Parnell, and other outstanding leaders of early Quakerism. If the practice of appearing as signs had not met with the approval of these powerful moulders of the new movement, it would never have become so widespread, lasted so long, or won such broad acceptance among early Friends.1 George Fox was himself drawn towards this type of behaviour, although he never went naked, dressed in sackcloth and ashes, blacked his face, or broke bottles or pitchers. A reading of Fox's Journal shows that he recorded a number of such cases (Robert Huntington, Thomas Ibbott, Richard Sale, William Simpson, and others), without making any condemnation of their various forms of signs. A close examination of his language shows, moreover, that Fox apparently approved these acts sometimes saying that these people were "moved of the Lord" to perform their signs,2 while at other times saying simply that they "were moved".3 A very interesting passage, following his description of Ibbott's sign of the Great Fire, shows that Fox believed that "the Lord has exercised his prophets and people and servants by his power, and showed them signs of his judgements".4 Elizabeth Harris (who was wont to appear in sackcloth 1 Cf. -

PA-6225 Location: 611 Meetinghouse Road, Upper Chichester Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania Present Owner: Concord Monthly Meeting, Religious Society of Friends Present Use: Meeting House used semi-annually for religious worship Significance: Chichester Meeting House is a well-preserved and unusual example of eighteenth-century Quaker meeting-house architecture in the Delaware Valley. Erected between 1769 and 1771, the building follows a plan with few contemporary counterparts. Most extant American meeting-house designs of the period place the main entrance(s) and elevated seating area known as the facing bench on the long walls. At Chichester, both features are located in the gable ends. Again rejecting convention, Chichester's designers partitioned the building in such a way as to exclude the facing bench from one of the two meeting rooms. This layout may reflect the influence of local domestic architecture. It may as easily represent an interpretation of English meeting-house design or testify to the relative status of Chichester's men's and women's meetings for business. In any case, the building's configuration deserves further study. Chichester Meeting House also exhibits distinctive features of a smaller scale. These include: a decorative water table that highlights comers and doors, a comer fireplace, an early iron stove, and a secondary, waist-high partition door. -

The building exemplifies a self-conscious effort to express Quaker values of simplicity and stewardship in architectural choices. Examining the changing meanings of simplicity as expressed in Quaker meeting houses, this article argues that contemporary Friends in the United States have given nontraditional meanings to the concept and now associate simplicity with environmental stewardship in personal and community life. -

PeterPhillips* ABSTRACT: From the late 17' century, the Religious Society of Friends ("Quakers") ob- served a method of resolving disputes arisingwithin congregations that was scrip- turally based, and culminated in final and binding arbitration. The practice of Quaker arbitrationgradually disappearedduring the late 19 th and early 2 0th cen- turies, andfew modern Quakers are even aware of it. This article traces that de- cline and notes similaritieswith mercantile arbitration. In both religious and mer- cantile arbitration,a defined community valued the goal of avoidinggroup disrup- tion more than the goal of vindicating individual legal rights. -
Quakers on Meeting for Worship for Business
The Quaker meeting community in decision making, support, organization, and relation to the wider Quaker community (among unprogrammed Friends meetings) Quaker decision making The Friends decision making process arises out of our experience and understanding of the Spirit and our relationship to it. It is grounded in worship and our intention to discern together how the Spirit is leading us as a body. Friends gather in the meeting for business and enter into worship, waiting to open into awareness of the stream “where heart and mind and will are united in God and with one another;” it is an intentional attention to the Inward Teacher, the Inward Light. In this spiritual consciousness, we are guided by the Light to discern the way of God in the matter at hand. The clerk of the meeting prepares an agenda, with input from the meeting committees, and facilitates the business meeting. Friends present will speak to the matter, from a contemplative alertness as led by the Spirit, careful to be brief, peaceable, and non-repetitive. They also listen carefully, patiently, and open to the Spirit’s movement. It is a process of discernment of guidance, rather than a sharing of opinions. We do not vote, but the clerk (and everyone) listens for an emerging spiritual unity on the Spirit’s leading for this group on this issue. The clerk tests for this sense of the meeting, and when the meeting is in unity, a minute is written on the decision, and the meeting moves to the next matter. If there is not yet unity, the meeting continues to seek the Spirit’s guidance together, perhaps with a time of silence. -
