Out of the silence, Clerk Heather M. Cook (Chatham-Summit) greeted Friends with prayer, asking Friends to open our hearts, listen in humility, act with cour- age, and deepen in faithfulness. She invited Friends to practice self-discipline when discerning whether to speak to the mat- ters coming forward. She introduced those at the clerks’ table and reviewed the agenda. 2010-11-02. The reading clerk called the roll, asking Friends to rise by regional meeting. All regions were represented. 2010-11-03. Andy von Salis (Brooklyn), of the host commit- tee of New York Quarterly Meeting (NYQM), welcomed us and brought greetings from the clerks of the quarterly meeting who could not be with us. This is the first time that NYQM has host- ed Yearly Meeting at the Flushing meetinghouse, the site of the first session of New York Yearly Meeting in 1696. 2010-11-04. Portions of the 2010 epistle of Intermountain Yearly Meeting were read. They sought the meaning of service in these challenging times: Is service different in the twenty- first century? Are the tools different? Are they, as a Meeting, called to engage in service? What are the gifts and challenges of giving, and of receiving? They also approved minutes on im- migration and the use of military force after years of heartfelt threshing and waiting for the Spirit’s leading. 2010-11-05. The Clerk reported on an American Friends Ser- vice Committee (AFSC)/New York Yearly Meeting (NYYM) joint statement “A Call to Understanding and Peace,” issued in August in response to the proposed Islamic Center in Lower Manhattan. It was sent by AFSC to the White House in Sep- tember, in response to a request for statements on the pro- posed mass burning of the Qur’an in Florida.     Introduction Welcome to the Flagstaff Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. We would like to acquaint you with who we are and with some of our history and beliefs. This publication introduces us, but it is only a beginning. Please feel free to ask us any questions you might have. Basic beliefs and practices of Friends When Friends are asked, “What do Quakers believe?” they may hem and haw as they search for an honest answer. Quakers have no written doctrine to which all are expected to adhere. There are, however, generally held beliefs among Quakers; a person who is unable to agree with most of them may not feel completely at home in a group of Friends. Quakerism began in the seventeenth century with George Fox. Then, as now, the Quaker faith was based on the belief that God’s will is continually and directly revealed to every person who seeks it. For this reason, Quakers are also sometimes called seekers. Although it is difficult to describe the will of God in words, Quakers refer to it as the Light, and devote their attention to minding the Light or seeking the Light. God is also said to speak to the condition of those who pay attention. ___________________________________________________ The majority of this booklet was prepared by the Fort Collins Friends Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. They have expressly waived all rights to their material, but asked that they be referenced appropriately.     History-Iowa Yearly Meeting 8/1/17, 114 PM BRIEF HISTORY OF IOWA YEARLY MEETING OF FRIENDS (CONSERVATIVE) A. QUAKER HISTORY THE ROOTS OF QUAKERISM The Religious Society of Friends had its beginnings in mid-Seventeenth Century England. The movement grew out of the confusion and uncertainty which prevailed during the closing years of the Puritan Revolution and which culminated in the overthrow of the English monarchy. During the long Medieval period, the English Church, like other national churches throughout western Europe, had been subject to the authority of the Pope and the Church of Rome. However, throughout the later Middle Ages dissident groups such as the Lollards in Fourteenth Century England questioned the teaching and authority of the Roman Church. All of northern and western Europe was profoundly affected by the Protestant Reformation. Its particular origin may be traced to about 1519 when Martin Luther began his protest in Germany. While Lutheranism supplanted Roman Catholic control in much of north central Europe, another Protestant movement led by John Calvin became dominant in the Netherlands, in Scotland, and among the Huguenots in France. The Anabaptists constituted still another Protestant element. In England, however, the Protestant movement had a somewhat different history. About 1534 King Henry VIII broke with the Roman church, with the immediate personal purpose of dissolving his first marriage and entering into another. As a result of this break with Rome, the numerous abbeys throughout England were closed and plundered and their extensive land holdings were distributed among the king's favorites. The Catholic church enjoyed a period of reascendancy during the reign of Queen Mary, only to be replaced as the established church by the Church of England during the long reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

    “Flavors” of Quakers in the U.S. Today It is hard to delineate clear cut branches of American Quakerism because different branches define themselves differently, and because there is much variation and overlap. You can sort Quakers in several ways: by our qualities and characteristics, by the major affiliating organizations we associate with, or by historical lineage (which group is an offshoot of which other group). These different ways of categorizing us will produce similar, but not identical groups. Following is a rough sorting. Liberal Friends Generally, liberal Friends practice unprogrammed worship, do not have formal clergy, and emphasize the authority of the Light Within. They value universalism, meaning they include members identifying with a variety of theological traditions, such as Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Wicca, and increasingly nontheism. You find them most often in the eastern and western parts of the U.S. and in college towns. There are two major groups of Liberal Friends: ● Those affiliated with Friends General Conference (see www.fgcquaker.org). These meetings ​ ​ often trace their roots back to the Hicksite side of the major division (see historic notes below) but there are other histories mixed in. FGC includes yearly meetings in the U.S. and Canada. ● Independent or Western Friends. Located mostly in the Western part of the United States, these Friends are sometimes called “Beanites,” because they trace their roots, to some degree, to the leadership of Joel and Hannah Bean, who came out of the Orthodox side of the major division, but parted ways. Independent Friends have no affiliating organization, but they do have a magazine, Western Friend (https://westernfriend.org).

    Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway Delaware Chapter 3.0 Intrinsic Resource Assessment The following Intrinsic Resource Assessment chapter outlines the intrinsic resources found along the corridor. The National Scenic Byway Program defines an intrinsic resource as the cultural, historical, archeological, recreational, natural or scenic qualities or values along a roadway that are necessary for designation as a Scenic Byway. Intrinsic resources are features considered significant, exceptional and distinctive by a community and are recognized and expressed by that community in its comprehensive plan to be of local, regional, statewide or national significance and worthy of preservation and management (60 FR 26759). Nationally significant resources are those that tend to draw travelers or visitors from regions throughout the United States. National Scenic Byway CMP Point #2 An assessment of the intrinsic qualities and their context (the areas surrounding the intrinsic resources). The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway offers travelers a significant amount of Historical and Cultural resources; therefore, this CMP is focused mainly on these resource categories. The additional resource categories are not ignored in this CMP; they are however, not at the same level of significance or concentration along the corridor as the Historical and Cultural resources. The resources represented in the following chapter provide direct relationships to the corridor story and are therefore presented in this chapter. A map of the entire corridor with all of the intrinsic resources displayed can be found on Figure 6. Figures 7 through 10 provide detailed maps of the four (4) corridors segments, with the intrinsic resources highlighted. This Intrinsic Resource Assessment is organized in a manner that presents the Primary (or most significant resources) first, followed by the Secondary resources.

  • Puente De Amigos
    Puente de Amigos Purpose Puente de Amigos Committee (Bridge of Friends) fosters a spiritual relationship, based on mutual respect, equality, and love between New England Yearly Meeting (NEYM) and Cuba Yearly Meeting (CYM) to which both meetings have been corporately called. Since 1991 the relationship with Cuba Yearly Meeting has been an important part of the religious life of New England Yearly Meeting, and the committee works to support the continuation of this ministry. Procedures The full committee meets for business 2–4 times during the year, including meetings at Annual Yearly Meeting Sessions. Puente de Amigos has an Executive Committee that makes needed decisions between committee meetings. There are also ad hoc Orientation and Discernment Committees formed to work with New England friends interested in representing NEYM in Cuba that can bring recommendations to the full committee, as there is a rigorous discernment process for those seeking a religious visa. The Puente de Amigos committee builds relationships with Cuban Quakers by arranging exchanges of religious visitors between the two yearly meetings and encouraging ongoing connection through pairings of Cuban and New England monthly meetings called sister meetings. The committee arranges for delegates from Cuba Yearly Meeting to attend NEYM Annual Sessions and to visit local meetings and participate in other Friends activities. It provides simultaneous Spanish interpretation at NEYM Annual Sessions, and offers a number of activities that highlight our relationship with Spanish-speaking Friends, such as hosting a “Puente table” at meals for those interested in meeting the visitors from CYM and facilitating a Spanish language anchor group.

How do they relate to larger social dynamics such as intractable conflict and tourism? How do the friendships change the dynamics within these communities? In this paper two friendship projects are analyzed in terms of the strategies they employ to navigate the dynamics of conflict and social inequality between the two states.

PA-6225 Location: 611 Meetinghouse Road, Upper Chichester Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania Present Owner: Concord Monthly Meeting, Religious Society of Friends Present Use: Meeting House used semi-annually for religious worship Significance: Chichester Meeting House is a well-preserved and unusual example of eighteenth-century Quaker meeting-house architecture in the Delaware Valley. Erected between 1769 and 1771, the building follows a plan with few contemporary counterparts. Most extant American meeting-house designs of the period place the main entrance(s) and elevated seating area known as the facing bench on the long walls. At Chichester, both features are located in the gable ends. Again rejecting convention, Chichester's designers partitioned the building in such a way as to exclude the facing bench from one of the two meeting rooms. This layout may reflect the influence of local domestic architecture. It may as easily represent an interpretation of English meeting-house design or testify to the relative status of Chichester's men's and women's meetings for business. In any case, the building's configuration deserves further study. Chichester Meeting House also exhibits distinctive features of a smaller scale. These include: a decorative water table that highlights comers and doors, a comer fireplace, an early iron stove, and a secondary, waist-high partition door.

English ministers visiting in America sided with one group of Friends and denounced the others as unsound. Thus it seemed reasonable and proper to recognize the yearly meetings called "Orthodox," and to ostracize the other branch called "Hicksite," which meant they were no longer to be thought of as Quakers. As other splits came in the United States, the British Friends chose in each situation to recognize one branch and ostracize the others.
