ABSTRACT This article presents both ethnoentomological notes on Nahuatl and Mixtec language terms as they are applied to Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) and distributional records for species collected during three projects carried out in the states of Guerrero and Puebla, Mexico. Some comparative data from other Mesoamerican and Native American languages are discussed. Indigenous common names are mapped onto current taxonomic nomenclature, and an analysis is offered of the logical basis for Indigenous classification: the exclusion of some cerambycids and the inclusion of other beetles in the nominal native “cerambycid” category. New state distributional records for the Cerambycidae collected in this study are offered for Guerrero: Bebelis picta Pascoe, Callipogon senex Dupont, Neocompsa macrotricha Martins, Olenosus ser- rimanus Bates, Ornithia mexicana zapotensis Tippmann, Stenygra histrio Audinet-Serville, Strongylaspis championi Bates, Lissonotus flavocinctus puncticollis Bates, and Nothopleurus lobigenis Bates; and Puebla: Juiaparus mexicanus (Thomson), Ptychodes guttulatus Dillon and Dillon, and Steirastoma senex White. COMUNIDADE DE COLEOPTERA EM DUAS FITOFISIONOMIAS DE CAATINGA NO ESTADO DA PARAÍBA, NORDESTE DO BRASIL: COMPOSIÇÃO, DIVERSIDADE, VARIAÇÃO SAZONAL E GRUPOS TRÓFICOS por ROZILEUDO DA SILVA GUEDES (Sob Orientação do Professor Paschoal Coelho Grossi - UFRPE) RESUMO A Caatinga é um importante ecossistema brasileiro, pela sua biodiversidade, endemismo e particularidades climáticas, no entanto, sua fauna de besouros é pouco conhecida. Diante disso, esse estudo avaliou a estrutura, variação sazonal e grupos tróficos da comunidade de Coleoptera de duas fitofisionomias presentes na região semiárida da Caatinga, amostrada por meio de armadilha malaise em duas fitofisionomias de Caatinga, sendo uma de vegetação xerófila e outra de floresta ciliar, durante quatro anos, semanalmente. Os resultados demonstraram uma rica fauna de besouros, composta por 383 espécies e 42 famílias. A floresta ciliar apresentou maior riqueza e abundância em relação à vegetação xerófila. Embora presente em região com temperaturas médias altas e prolongado período de escassez de chuvas a amostragem próxima da floresta ciliar não apresentou variação sazonal significativa para a riqueza de espécies e abundância de indivíduos de besouros, ao contrário do que foi constatado para o ambiente de vegetação xerófila, em que se registrou um padrão evidente de redução para ambos os parâmetros nas estações secas. A variação no número de indivíduos das espécies foi a principal responsável pela diferença constatada na composição da coleopterofauna, considerando em conjunto o período de estio e chuvoso, entre as fitofisionomias. Herbívoros, carnívoros, detritívoros e fungívoros foram os grupos tróficos i coletados, sendo registrado padrão sazonal dos grupos durante o período seco entre as áreas com aumento na abundância na floresta ciliar nessa estação, exceto para carnívoros. -

Development of new biocontrol agents of Bellyache bush and Parkinsonia Abstract This project pushed the prospects for biocontrol of the weeds bellyache bush and parkinsonia to a higher level. Previously, a significant amount of survey work had been done in Central America looking for potential biocontrol agents but the species resulting from those surveys had not been identified or prioritised. Our MLA funded project surveyed new areas of South America, identified the entire insect fauna and assessed their potential for release in Australia. Before this project, we had not identified any high potential agents, now we have three agents for parkinsonia that have a high probability of being suitable for introduction into Australia. We have been less successful with bellyache bush but at least we now know with certainty that this target weed has few prospects. -

INRODUCTION Beetles of the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longicorn beetles, are very important economically as many of these insects are injurious to living trees as well as to timber. After the publication of Gahan's monographic work (1906) in the Fauna of British India series no comprehensive work on the taxonomy of Indian Cerambycidae has been published. Stebbing (1914), Beeson and Bhatia (1939) and Beeson (1941) have contributed on the biolology and life history of many important species by taxonomic informations are still scattered in various journals published from all over the world in different languages. This is especially true for the subfamily Lamiinae which includes majority of the longicorn beetles and was not included in Gahan's fauna volume. In the present paper, descriptions, geographical distribution, additional locality data and biological informations wherever available on all the species known from Indian region of the genus Apomecyna have been provided. A key to the genera of tribe Apomecynini known from Indian region and another key to the Indian species of the genus Apomecyna have been included. Tribe Apomecynini Lacordaire 1872 The tribe Apomecynini is one of the 30 tribes of subfamily Lamiinae known from India and can be characterised as follows: Small to moderate in size, long to very long in form.
