The Advisability of High-Rise Construction in the City
E3S Web of Conferences 33, 01037 (2018) https://doi.org/10.1051/e3sconf/20183301037 HRC 2017 The advisability of high-rise construction in the city 1 2 3 Natalia Sergievskaya *, Tatyana Pokrovskaya and Natalya Vorontsova 1 Moscow State University of Civil Engineering, Yaroslavskoe shosse, 26, Moscow,129337, Russia 2 Moscow Polytechnic University, Bolshaya Semenovskaya str., 38, Moscow, 107023, Russia 3 Vyatka State University, Moskovskaya str., 36, Kirov, 610000, Russia Abstract. In this article there discusses the question of advisability high- rise construction, the reasons for its use, both positive and negative sides of it. On the one hand, a number of authors believe that it is difficult to avoid high-rise construction due to the limited areas in very large cities. On the other hand, a number of other authors draw attention to the problems associated with high-rise construction. The author of the article analyses examples of high-rise construction in several countries (UAE, Dubai "Burj Khalifa"; Japan "Tokyo Sky Tree"; United States of America, "Willis Tower"; Russia "Federation Tower") and proves the advisability of high-rise construction in the city. 1 Introduction Nowadays high-rise construction is becoming more and more actual in the world. This is due to the fact the urbanization urban space is increasing and there is also accelerated development of construction technologies and technology of engineering support of buildings. As it was considered in USSR and then in Russia, high-rise buildings have height of 75 m that is more 25 floors. As for other countries, high-rise buildings have height from 35 to 100 metres. -
Evaluating Skyscraper Design and Construction Technologies on an International Basis
EVALUATING SKYSCRAPER DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGIES ON AN INTERNATIONAL BASIS by Saad Allah Fathy Abo Moslim B.Sc., Mansoura University, Egypt, 1984 M.Eng., The University of British Columbia, Canada, 2000 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Civil Engineering) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) November 2017 © Saad Allah Fathy Abo Moslim, 2017 Abstract Design and construction functions of skyscrapers tend to draw from the best practices and technologies available worldwide in order to meet their development, design, construction, and performance challenges. Given the availability of many alternative solutions for different facets of a building’s design and construction systems, the need exists for an evaluation framework that is comprehensive in scope, transparent as to the basis for decisions made, reliable in result, and practical in application. Findings from the literature reviewed combined with a deep understanding of the evaluation process of skyscraper systems were used to identify the components and their properties of such a framework, with emphasis on selection of categories, perspectives, criteria, and sub-criteria, completeness of these categories and perspectives, and clarity in the language, expression and level of detail used. The developed framework divided the evaluation process for candidate solutions into the application of three integrated filters. The first filter screens alternative solutions using two-comprehensive checklists of stakeholder acceptance and local feasibility criteria/sub-criteria on a pass-fail basis to eliminate the solutions that do not fit with local cultural norms, delivery capabilities, etc. The second filter treats criteria related to design, quality, production, logistics, installation, and in-use perspectives for assessing the technical performance of the first filter survivors in order to rank them. -

Assad Henchmen’s Russian Refuge How some of the top financers and human rights abusers of the Syrian regime are funnelling money out of Syria into Russia, and possibly beyond 11 NOVEMBER 2019 Assad Henchmen’s Russian Refuge Global Witness estimates that prominent members of the powerful Makhlouf family, cousins of dictator Bashar al-Assad, own at least US$40 million worth of property across two Moscow skyscrapers. Some of the same family members have been key in maintaining al-Assad’s grip on power. Information about the regime’s assets and finances is notoriously scarce due to the terror fostered by al-Assad’s apparatus at home and abroad. Our investigation further shows that the loans secured against some of the properties could be for the purposes of laundering money from Syria into Moscow. The Luxury Malling of Shanghai: Successes and Dissonances in the Chinese City
1 1 Th e Luxury Malling of Shanghai Successes and Dissonances in the Chinese City A g n è s R o c a m o r a Introduction Th is chapter looks at the role of one particular type of urban formation in the redefi nition of Shanghai: the luxury shopping mall. In the 1990s and following China’s post-Cultural Revolution opening to the West as well as the party- state’s adoption of a socialist market economy, the city saw the emergence and rapid proliferation of luxury shopping malls. Multi- storey buildings hosting international brands such as Fendi, Chanel, Louis Vuitton or Coach are recurring sights, with Plaza 66, CITIC and Westgate Mall (known as the Golden Triangle of luxury malls) only a few among the still rising list of luxury shopping malls. Th ese malls are part of a wider phenomenon of urban redevelopment in Shanghai. Indeed throughout the 1990s the city experienced an unprecedented programme of urban renewal, economic restructuring and growth.1 Shanghai shift ed from a manufacturing economy to one focused on fi nance, real estate and the service sector.2 Th is urban and economic shift was refl ected in the restructuring of the spatial organization of the city, with skyscrapers, avenues and newly constructed roads central to its reshaping and globalizing.3 Informed by a series of visits to Shanghai in the course of 2014–16 4 and in dialogue with some of the extant literature on Shanghai and China, the chapter shows that to understand the presence of luxury malls in Shanghai one needs to look at the wider context of China’s embrace of both shopping malls and luxury, as well as at the city’s history as a cosmopolitan consumerist centre (fi rst section). -
