Columbian Congress of the Universalist Church for the World's COLUMBIAN CONGRESS. Adopted. 1803. We believe that the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments contain a revelation of the character of God, and of the duty, interest and final destination of mankind. II. We believe that there is one God, whose nature is Love, revealed in one Lord fesus Christ, by one Holy Spirit of Grace, who will finally restore the whole family of mankind to holiness and happi- ness. III. Ministers at the Congress, - INTRODUCTION, THE CONGRESSES held in the Memorial Art Institute of Chicago, by the World's Congress Auxiliary of the Colum- bian Exposition, during the six months of the World's Fair, attracted wide attention and are generally regarded as among the proudest achievements of the Columbian celebration. Never before in the history of the world has there been such an extended series of assemblies in the interest of the higher things of peace and civilization. The Congress Platform was for the time being the Forum of the World. The great subjects that engage human attention and by whose discussion from age to age civilization is advanced and the world moved onward, had ther e consideration and discussion. The program embraced a larger variety of topics than was ever before attempted in one general convocation. The great interests of Government and Jurispru- dence; Commerce and Finance; Science, Literature, Art and Music; Education, Politics and the Press; Reform, Political Econ- omy, Sociology, Ethics and Religion, with many associated topics, had ample discussion in meetings arranged for that purpose. Over 200 of these congresses were held, holding more than 1,200 sessions and addressed by nearly 6,000 speakers. Distinguished scholars of Europe, America and the Orient were represented either in person or by ^papers prepared especially for the occa- sion. It is estimated that 700,000 people attended these meetings during the six months, the Auxiliary Congress rivaling in interest and success the great Exposition itself. Hon. Charles C. Bonney, of Chicago, was the originator of the congress idea. Before any of the plans for the Columbian Ex- position had taken form, he came to the front with this splendid conception, afterwards worked out in the comprehensive spirit and wise administration of himself and associates. "The crowning glory of the World's Fair of 1893," wrote Mr. Bonney in 1889, "should not be the exhibit then to be made of the material tri- — x INTRODUCTION. umphs, industrial achievements and mechanical victories of man, however magnificent that display may be. Something higher and nobler is demanded by the enlightened and progressive spirit of the present age." The World's Congress Auxiliary, with its working motto, "Mind, not matter; men, not things," was the result of that conclusion. The moral and intellectual exhibit thus prepared, with its contributions to the welfare of humanity, and its revelation of the progressive spirit of our modern life forging its way ahead to the intellectual victory of the world, was as remark- able in its way as the marvelous artistic and mechanical displays so splendidly housed in the palaces of the White City. Grand as the Exposition was, and nobly as it redeemed the expectations of its projectors and the hopes of the American people, it had a worthy competitor in the World's Congress Auxiliary. The Con- gress will always be remembered in connection with its great associate, the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. The Religious Congresses held as a section of the Auxiliary in the month of September were perhaps the most notable of the Congresses. This is particularly true of the now famous "Parlia- ment of Religions," which extended through seventeen days, and was undoubtedly the most impressive and unique assembly of the Nineteenth Century, if indeed it was ever paralleled in the world's history. In this Parliament convened representatives of the great historic religions which were old before Christianity was born, and whose teachings for twenty-four centuries have been received by countless millions of the human race. It was an occasion of su- preme interest and certainly marked an epoch in religious history. Here men of the Orient and Occident met in friendly conclave to discuss the one paramount interest of all ages and climes Re- ligion, "not merely" as Dr. Barrows well said in his introduc- tory address, "as Baptists and Buddhists, Catholics and Confucians, Parsees and Presbyterians, Methodists and Moslems," but as "members of a Parliament of Religions over which flies no sectari- an flag, which is to be stampeded by no sectarian war cries, but where for the first time in a large council, is lifted up the banner of love, friendship and brotherhood." It gave added emphasis to the significance of the gathering that this Parliament assembled under the auspices of that Christianity which recognizes the Father- hood of God and the brotherhood of man, and is thus sufficiently inclusive to clasp a world in its wide embrace. INTRODUCTION. xf In the same weeks with this wonderful gathering were held also the series of denominational congresses, in which each church or denomination, in its own way, set forth its peculiar principles and the distinguishing points in its doctrinal teaching.and history. The papers and addresses contained in this volume were presented at the Congress of the Universalist Church, held September 13-15. The arrangements were made by a local committee whose names are elsewhere printed, appointed by the president of the Auxiliary, and with the assistance of an advisory council, whose names are are also given in the Appendix. This committee held several meetings in the autumn of i8g2,when the preliminary address was issued and the program arranged and published. Alluding to the proposed Congress, the address used the following language: "It will be a long coveted opportunity to make the world better acquainted with the genius of our faith. The best thoughts of our leading thinkers will not only be listened to on this great occasion, but will be placed in respectful com- parison with those of other leading religious thinkers, and circulated throughout the world. Let us, therefore, unitedly and with characteristic thoroughness, set forth the honorable history and sublime principles to which our church is conse- crated, in order that the reading and thoughtful portion of mankind may no longer be excused for ignorance regarding our aims and objects as a Christian organization, which stands second to none in the advocacy of moral and social reforms, and which is seeking to be a co-worker with all other Christian bodies in building the Kingdom of Heaven among men." That the opportunity thus indicated was duly improved the papers presented in this volume furnish ample evidence.

    ATR/100.3 Introduction to Evelyn Underhill, “Church Congress Syllabus No. 3: The Christian Doctrine of Sin and Salvation, Part III: Worship” Kathleen Henderson Staudt* This short piece by Evelyn Underhill (1875–1941) appeared in a publication from the US Church Congress movement in the 1930s. It presents a remarkably concise summary of her major thought from this period.1 By this time, she was a well-known voice among Angli- cans. Indeed, Archbishop Michael Ramsey wrote that “in the twenties and thirties there were few, if indeed, any, in the Church of England who did more to help people to grasp the priority of prayer in the Christian life and the place of the contemplative element within it.”2 Underhill’s major work, Mysticism, continuously in print since its first publication in 1911, reflects at once Underhill’s broad scholarship on the mystics of the church, her engagement with such contemporaries as William James and Henri Bergson, and, perhaps most important, her curiosity and insight into the ways that the mystics’ experiences might inform the spiritual lives of ordinary people.3 The title of a later book, Practical Mysticism: A Little Book for Normal People (1914) summarizes what became most distinctive in Underhill’s voice: her ability to fuse the mystical tradition with the homely and the * Kathleen Henderson Staudt works as a teacher, poet, and spiritual director at Virginia Theological Seminary and Wesley Theological Seminary.     Our History Tracing our Congregation from 1729 to Today ARLINGTON STREET CHURCH Unitarian Universalist Beginnings • Our community began as a group of Scots-Irish Calvinists gathered in a converted barn on Long Lane in Boston on November 15th, 1729. The inhospitable residents of Boston dubbed them derogatorily as “The Church of the Presbyterian Strangers,” and the name stuck. The building be- came known as the Long Lane Meeting House. • A real church was built on the site in 1744; in it, the Massachusetts State Convention met and ratified the Constitution of the United States on February 7th, 1788. When the street name was changed from Long Lane to Federal Street in honor of the event, the building became known as The Federal Street Church • In 1787, the congregation, wanting to be self- governing, voted to call Jeremy Belknap, a liberal Congregationalist, to lead them in adopting the congregational form of governance. Thus they left the required creed and rule of the Presbytery. • William Ellery Channing, often known as the Fa- ther of GatheredAmerican Unitarianism, served as Senior Minister at the Federal Street Church from 1803 to 1842. Under his leadership the congregation prospered. To accommodate the crowds that Channing drew, the thirdin meeting house, Lovede- and Service signed by the noted Charles Bulfinch, was built in 1809 on the Federal Street site. • In 1819 Channing delivered “The Baltimore Sermon,” which defined the new Unitarianfor the- Justice and Peace ology for the burgeoning Unitarian movement. Although Channing originally resisted formation of a new denomination, under the direction of his associate and later successor, Ezra Stiles Gan- nett, the move toward separation from the Con- gregationalists began.

    The First Bishop of Liverpool Churchman 69/4 1955 Revd O. R. Clarke Church people of Liverpool have been celebrating the seventy-fifth anniversary of the formation of the Diocese. It is seventy-five years since Liverpool became an independent see, with a Bishop of its own. Hitherto it had been part of the Diocese of Chester, which then included South-West Lancashire. But Liverpool was a great and growing city with a crowded, vigorous life. It was a leading centre of shipping with its miles of docks, and its lively cosmopolitan life. The link with Chester, for all but officials, could clearly be only a slight and tenuous one, and Episcopal government from so distant a centre meant little. A separate Diocese was needed. Action was taken, the needed funds raised, the legal obstacles surmounted, and the See safely launched, free and independent. To think of the founding of the Diocese is to think of the first Bishop, John Charles Ryle. “A man of granite with the heart of a child, a man whose name is better known through that part of Christendom where the English language is spoken than that of any other save Charles Spurgeon”—such was the generous tribute paid to him by his successor, Bishop Chavasse. Ryle was the first Bishop of the new Diocese, and rightly proud of the fact. His critics—and no man is without critics—declared that he would not allow the fact that he was the first to be forgotten. Yet such pride in his Diocese was natural and proper.

    Welsh disestablishment: ‘A blessing in disguise’. David W. Jones The history of the protracted campaign to achieve Welsh disestablishment was to be characterised by a litany of broken pledges and frustrated attempts. It was also an exemplar of the ‘democratic deficit’ which has haunted Welsh politics. As Sir Henry Lewis1 declared in 1914: ‘The demand for disestablishment is a symptom of the times. It is the democracy that asks for it, not the Nonconformists. The demand is national, not denominational’.2 The Welsh Church Act in 1914 represented the outcome of the final, desperate scramble to cross the legislative line, oozing political compromise and equivocation in its wake. Even then, it would not have taken place without the fortuitous occurrence of constitutional change created by the Parliament Act 1911. This removed the obstacle of veto by the House of Lords, but still allowed for statutory delay. Lord Rosebery, the prime minister, had warned a Liberal meeting in Cardiff in 1895 that the Welsh demand for disestablishment faced a harsh democratic reality, in that: ‘it is hard for the representatives of the other 37 millions of population which are comprised in the United Kingdom to give first and the foremost place to a measure which affects only a million and a half’.3 But in case his audience were insufficiently disheartened by his homily, he added that there was: ‘another and more permanent barrier which opposes itself to your wishes in respect to Welsh Disestablishment’, being the intransigence of the House of Lords.4 The legislative delay which the Lords could invoke meant that the Welsh Church Bill was introduced to parliament on 23 April 1912, but it was not to be enacted until 18 September 1914.

    Bishop J C Ryle Eric Russell Liverpool became a diocese in 1880. For over 300 years south-west Lancashire had been part of the diocese of Chester, but with the rapid growth in population due to the industrial revolution, the building of the railways and the development of the vast docks system on the banks of the Mersey, voices were raised advocating a further division of the ancient diocese of Chester and the creation of a new diocese centred on Liverpool. Earlier in the century the diocese of Ripon had been reconstituted and Chester lost its Yorkshire territory. Another sub-division was made in 1847 when the diocese of Manchester was created to meet the religious needs of south Lancashire. Chester was again reduced in size when the counties of Cumberland and Westmoreland were transferred in 1856 to Carlisle. The diocese of Chester over the years had been considerably reduced in area, but due to the movement of workers to south-west Lancashire to meet the demands of industry, the population was constantly increasing and making it more and more difficult for the Church to fulfil her ministry. Victorian Liverpool Liverpool in the closing decades of the nineteenth century was fast becoming the hub of trade and commerce in the north-west of England. Manufacturers in the great industrial centres of Lancashire and Yorkshire exported their goods through the port. Iron and steel, machinery, textiles, manufactured goods and pottery were among the numerous items exported, and grain, raw cotton, sugar-cane, tobacco, timber and meat were some of the imported goods unloaded at the docks.

Their primary concerns were education and employment opportunities, suffrage, the defense of black female morality, and the condemnation of lynching. The philosophy of black female leaders was that they received their education for theelevation of the race. They believed in the moral superiority of women, that the degraded state of the black race was a result of the degraded state ofits women, and that only thro.Igh the actions ofblack women would their lot improve. Few white women were supportive of.black causes. Even suffragists Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton pladed color, above principle in \an attempt to gain support of southern white women. Thus, black women either formedorganizations such as the National AssociatiOn of Colored Women or worked independently on behalf of their rade, often condemning the actions and attitudes of white women. Although the 20th century saw an increased interracial cooperation among women, distrust of white women still prevailed.

ABSTRACT This thesis explores the lives of four British Quaker women—Isabella Ford, Isabel Fry, Margery Fry, and Ruth Fry—focusing on the way they engaged in peace issues in the early twentieth century. In order to examine the complexity and diversity of their experiences, this thesis investigates the characteristics of their Quakerism, pacifism and wider political and personal life, as well as the connections between them. In contrast to O’Donnell’s view that most radical Victorian Quaker women left Quakerism to follow their political pursuits with like-minded friends outside of Quakerism, Isabella Ford, one of the most radical socialists, and feminists among Quakers remained as a Quaker. British Quakers were divided on peace issues but those who disagreed with the general Quaker approach resigned and were not disowned; the case of Isabel Fry is a good example of this.
