Their primary concerns were education and employment opportunities, suffrage, the defense of black female morality, and the condemnation of lynching. The philosophy of black female leaders was that they received their education for theelevation of the race. They believed in the moral superiority of women, that the degraded state of the black race was a result of the degraded state ofits women, and that only thro.Igh the actions ofblack women would their lot improve. Few white women were supportive of.black causes. Even suffragists Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton pladed color, above principle in \an attempt to gain support of southern white women. Thus, black women either formedorganizations such as the National AssociatiOn of Colored Women or worked independently on behalf of their rade, often condemning the actions and attitudes of white women. Although the 20th century saw an increased interracial cooperation among women, distrust of white women still prevailed.

ABSTRACT This thesis explores the lives of four British Quaker women—Isabella Ford, Isabel Fry, Margery Fry, and Ruth Fry—focusing on the way they engaged in peace issues in the early twentieth century. In order to examine the complexity and diversity of their experiences, this thesis investigates the characteristics of their Quakerism, pacifism and wider political and personal life, as well as the connections between them. In contrast to O’Donnell’s view that most radical Victorian Quaker women left Quakerism to follow their political pursuits with like-minded friends outside of Quakerism, Isabella Ford, one of the most radical socialists, and feminists among Quakers remained as a Quaker. British Quakers were divided on peace issues but those who disagreed with the general Quaker approach resigned and were not disowned; the case of Isabel Fry is a good example of this.

    ‘the truest form of patriotism’ 9 ‘A new kind of patriotism’?1 British women in international politics revious chapters have outlined the diverse contexts in which reformulations of patriotism and citizenship emerged. The fem- P inist movement produced arguments based on ‘separate spheres’ ideologies which held that women’s contribution to the public sphere would bring an increased recognition of humanity in international relations. In contrast, peace workers such as Priscilla Peckover based their arguments on how a full understanding of pacifism would lead to a revision of what was understood by the ‘best interests’ of the nation. The methods of organisation used by Priscilla Peckover, Ellen Robinson and the IAPA were arguably more collaborative than those of the Peace Society, because they managed to work with people and organisations with whom they had political or ideological differences. This chapter con- siders the issues involved in collaborative organisation in greater depth, with reference to the International Council of Women (ICW). The ICW was founded in 1888, and was intended to provide a point of international contact and focus for the feminist movement. It grew steadily across the globe and continues to function today, maintaining a formalised structure built upon the model established in its early years. Even in its first decades, however, patriotisms and nationalisms intruded on the ICW in unexpected and often counter-productive ways. For example, the International Council of Women found that some potential members were hostile to the prospect of organising inter- nationally. In 1890, Millicent Garrett Fawcett put it to the secretary of the ICW that the British and US women’s movements could have nothing to learn from one another.

    Bedraggled Ballerinas on a Bus Back to Bow: The ‘Fairy Business’ Anne Witchard I The Kingdom of Transpontus In May 1976, the New York City Ballet put on Union Jack, a production created by the former Ballet Russes choreographer George Balanchine (1904–1983). Its pretext was ‘to honor the British heritage of the United States on the occasion of its Bicentennial’.1 In reality, two hundred years of American independence from British rule was commemorated by an unexpected, if tongue-in-cheek, tribute to British imperial pageantry and Victorian variety theatre. Union Jack, a ballet in three sections, opened with a frenetically fast balletic translation of a Scottish military tattoo: sword dances, swirling reels, and highland flings. This was followed by a costermonger pas-de-deux, saucily performed by a Pearly King and Queen to music-hall ditties including ‘The Night the Floor Fell In’ and ‘Our Lodger’s Such a Naice Young Man’. Their two little daughters arrived on stage in a cart drawn by a live donkey. In the third section sailors danced high- spirited hornpipes and jigs to traditional sea shanties. The finale brought together the whole cast of seventy-four dancers, coloured flags in hand, to semaphore ‘God Save the Queen’ to the strains of ‘Rule, Britannia’ while cannon shots resounded and the Union Jack descended behind them. The backdrops for the ballet were Tower Bridge as it might appear in a picture book for children, a cardboard set modelled on Pollock’s Victorian toy theatres, and painted sailing ships atop jaunty seaside waves. Balanchine’s references for the ‘Britishness’ of his ballet might be traced back fifty years to a similar production, The Triumph of Neptune, which he choreographed for the 1926 winter season of Sergei Diaghilev’s Russian Ballet at the Lyceum Theatre in London.

    French Feminists 113 French Feminists at the International Council of Women, 1888–1914 Jean Elisabeth Pedersen This article grows out of my interest in the histories of the women in a large group portrait that American suffrage activist Susan B. Anthony kept hanging on the wall over the desk in her study in Rochester, New York. An engraved version of the same group portrait, entitled “The Woman’s International Council: A Group of Representative Delegates,” appeared as part of a double-page spread in Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper on April 7, 1888.1 The editors of the newspaper included this version as an illustration for a separate article on the following page entitled “A Group of Notable Women,” and the twenty-seven women in the portrait all participated in the founding meeting of the International Council of Women (ICW) by attending the founding international women’s congress that Anthony and the other leaders of the National Woman Suffrage Association sponsored in Washington, D.C., in 1888.2 The central portion of a similar portrait, perhaps taken from one of the same set of original photographs that served as the source Jean Elisabeth Pedersen is Associate Professor of History in the Humanities Department of the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. At times, the performers or audience were under coercion to act in a certain way, but at other times constraints on behaviour were more indirect, because the music hall created common understanding of what was acceptable or respectable. There is, however, a further complication to consider: sometimes insider notions of what is normative or appropriate come into conflict with outsider concerns about music-hall behaviour. These various pressures are examined in the context of rowdiness, drunkenness, obscenity, and prostitution, and conflicts that result when internal institutional notions of what is normative or appropriate come into conflict with external social anxieties.
