CONSERVATION PLAN OLD SESSIONS HOUSE 22 CLERKENWELL GREEN LONDON EC1R ONA EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1. The Old Sessions House is one of the finest and most important historic buildings in Clerkenwell. Constructed in the late eighteenth century as the Middlesex Sessions House for the magistrates’ courts, it is a high-status building intended to dominate Clerkenwell Green and its surroundings. In 1860 onwards it was re-modelled and extended to present grander elevations to the newly laid out Farringdon and Clerkenwell Roads. Following the relocation of the magistrates courts in 1920 the premises became the headquarters of Avery Scales, and in the 1970s the building was acquired as a Masonic Lodge who occupied the premises until 2013. The new owners, Ted and Oliver Grebelius are therefore only the fourth proprietors in a 235 year history. 2. This Conservation Plan evaluates the historic and architectural significance of the building and its surviving fabric. It sets out the risks and opportunities in the context of the building’s condition, status and current conservation policy. It makes proposals for the repair and enhancement of the building, including a strategy of phased work. It suggests how improvements can be made to the setting of the building within the surrounding environment of Clerkenwell Green and Farringdon Lane. INTRODUCTION 3. This Conservation Plan for the Old Sessions House, Clerkenwell Green, has been commissioned by Oliver and Ted Grebelius, who acquired the building in late 2013. The Plan aims to inform and direct an appropriate way forward to re-use this important historic building and its immediate environs. -

De Bruyn / Anti-Semitism, Millenarianism, and Radical Dissent 577 A NTI-SEMITISM, MILLENARIANISM, AND RADICAL DISSENT IN EDMUND BURKE’S REFLECTIONS ON THE REVOLUTION IN FRANCE Frans De Bruyn The status of Edmund Burke’s Reflections on the Revolution in France as a classic text in political theory can be ascribed to the thoroughness with which it articulates a philosophical argument for political conservatism and to its undeni- able rhetorical and literary power.1 From its first appearance late in 1790, readers have responded to the astonishing range of cultural, historical, intellectual, and literary reference in the Reflections (as, indeed, in Burke’s other writings on the French Revolution). John Thelwall makes the point tellingly, if disapprovingly, in reviewing one of Burke’s later antirevolutionary tracts: “The rage of Juvenil, and the playful levity of Horace, are not sufficient; and Billingsgate and the shambles are forced into alliance with the muses, the classics, and the sciences, to supply him with terms and metaphors sufficiently forcible to express the mighty hatred with which he labours.”2 Thelwall shrewdly identifies an important and some- times disconcerting feature of Burke’s rhetorical virtuosity: his ability to press into service the full compass of eighteenth-century cultural discourse, from the high, polite, and exalted to the low, popular, and scurrilous. There is much to admire in this eloquence, but its copiousness and impet- uosity sometimes find display in unattractive, indeed blameworthy, modes of ex- pression. An instance of this, infrequently remarked upon, is Burke’s intermittent deployment in the Reflections of a language of anti-Semitism.3 One critic who has drawn attention to this aspect of Burke’s text is Tom Paulin, who addresses the Frans De Bruyn is Professor of English at the University of Ottawa in Canada. -

Connotations Vol. 16.1-3 (2006/2007) Decadence and Renewal in Dickens’s Our Mutual Friend LEONA TOKER The plot of Dickens’s Our Mutual Friend focuses on the presumed death and ultimate reappearance of the jeune premier, John Harmon. It had been Dickens’s plan to write about “a man, young and perhaps eccentric, feigning to be dead, and being dead to all intents and pur- poses external to himself, and for years retaining the singular view of life and character so imparted” (Forster 2: 291), until, presumably, he could overcome his ghostly detachment. This, indeed, happens owing to the unhurried growth of mutual love between Harmon, posing as the impecunious John Rokesmith, and Bella Wilfer, the woman whose hand in marriage is the condition, according to his eccentric father’s will, for his inheriting the vast property that has meantime gone to the old man’s trusty steward Boffin. Thus Harmon, as well as the erst- while willful and would-be “mercenary” Bella, are reclaimed, re- deemed by love—in the best tradition of the religious humanism that suffuses Dickens’s fiction. As this précis of the plot may suggest, dying and being restored from death are both a metaphor for the literal events of the novel and a symbol of moral regeneration. As usual, Dickens partly desentimen- talizes the up-beat poetic justice by limiting its applicability: Betty Higden’s little grandson whom the Boffins wish to adopt and name John Harmon dies—his death symbolizes or, perhaps, replaces that of the protagonist; the traitor Charley Hexam is ready to march off, unpunished, treading (metaphorically) on corpses (including his father who had literally made a more or less honest living from sal- vaging corpses from the river). -

Charles Dickens's “A Christmas Carol”
CHARLES DICKENS’S “A CHRISTMAS CAROL” A lesson which emphasized the importance of imaginative sympathy, and of that `Fancy' which is to be discovered in the true use of memory. Memories of the past. Memories of childhood (DAVID COPPERFIELD. is a heavily fictionalized but emotionally truthful account of his own childhood). Memory was a form of inspiration, therefore, which linked past and present, unified humankind with the shared recollection of sorrow, and imparted a meaning to life....' Dicken's theme is man's inhumanity to child, and his social target is the new workhouses established on the Benthamite principles (see for example OLIVER TWIST (1837-1838)…. If in his later works his characters became less lively, this is less because they are deeper than because they have to fit into a social vision that is increasingly despairing. When critics accused him of melodrama and sentimentality he would characteristically reply that everything he wrote was true, it represented the way of the world. That in a sense is the theme of this introduction to Charles Dickens; there will be no attempt to provide a simple biography, but rather to outline the ways in which the very texture of Dickens’s life affected the nature of his fiction. Dickens was changed by his novels and by the creatures who stalk through them, because in the act of creating them he came to realise more of his own possibilities: 1. The boy who worked in a crumbling warehouse became the novelist who insistently recorded the presence of dark and crumbling buildings which haunt his fiction.
