ABSTRACT A theatrical portrait is an image of an actor or actors in character. This genre was widespread in eighteenth century London and was practised by a large number of painters and engravers of all levels of ability. The sources of the genre lay in a number of diverse styles of art, including the court portraits of Lely and Kneller and the fetes galantes of Watteau and Mercier. Three types of media for theatrical portraits were particularly prevalent in London, between ca745 and 1800 : painting, print and book illustration.

    CONSERVATION PLAN OLD SESSIONS HOUSE 22 CLERKENWELL GREEN LONDON EC1R ONA EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1. The Old Sessions House is one of the finest and most important historic buildings in Clerkenwell. Constructed in the late eighteenth century as the Middlesex Sessions House for the magistrates’ courts, it is a high-status building intended to dominate Clerkenwell Green and its surroundings. In 1860 onwards it was re-modelled and extended to present grander elevations to the newly laid out Farringdon and Clerkenwell Roads. Following the relocation of the magistrates courts in 1920 the premises became the headquarters of Avery Scales, and in the 1970s the building was acquired as a Masonic Lodge who occupied the premises until 2013. The new owners, Ted and Oliver Grebelius are therefore only the fourth proprietors in a 235 year history. 2. This Conservation Plan evaluates the historic and architectural significance of the building and its surviving fabric. It sets out the risks and opportunities in the context of the building’s condition, status and current conservation policy. It makes proposals for the repair and enhancement of the building, including a strategy of phased work. It suggests how improvements can be made to the setting of the building within the surrounding environment of Clerkenwell Green and Farringdon Lane. INTRODUCTION 3. This Conservation Plan for the Old Sessions House, Clerkenwell Green, has been commissioned by Oliver and Ted Grebelius, who acquired the building in late 2013. The Plan aims to inform and direct an appropriate way forward to re-use this important historic building and its immediate environs.

ABSTRACT The mechanical paintings of Matthew Boulton and Francis Eginton have been the subject of few scholarly publications since their invention in the 1770s. Such interest as there has been has focussed on the unknown process, and the lack of scientific material analysis has resulted in several confusing theories of production. This thesis’s use of the Archives of Soho, containing Boulton’s business papers, has cast light on the production and consumption of mechanical paintings, while collaboration with the British Museum, and their new scientific evidence, have both supported and challenged the archival evidence. This thesis seeks to prove various propositions about authenticity, the role of class and taste in the selection of artists and subjects for mechanical painting reproduction, and the role played by the reproductive process’s ingenuity in marketing the finished product.

Cette année, le guide recense plus de 550 pubs, dont 81 nouveaux établissements, situés dans tout le Royaume-Uni, depuis Kylesku en Écosse jusqu'à Perranuthnoe et Southwolt en Angleterre en passant par Cahersiveen en Irlande. Sous la direction de Michael Ellis, Directeur du guide MICHELIN, cette sélection montre que la qualité de la cuisine proposée dans les pubs ne cesse de s’améliorer, et que de plus en plus d'établissements choisissent de servir en priorité des produits régionaux. De nombreux pubs parviennent à relever le défi du rapport qualité-prix : « Les chefs n'hésitent plus à utiliser des pièces moins nobles afin de composer des menus à des prix plus abordables, notamment pour le déjeuner, souligne la rédactrice en chef du guide Rebecca Burr. Ils se montrent aussi plus souples que par le passé et acceptent plus facilement d'échanger les menus du bar et du restaurant. Certains établissements commencent même à proposer des petits-déjeuners, des brunchs et des pauses goûter l’après-midi.» Preuve de l’amélioration permanente de la qualité, deux nouveaux pubs se voient attribuer des étoiles MICHELIN cette année : le Hinds Head de Heston Blumenthal à Bray et le Red Lion Freehouse dirigé par Guy et Britt Manning, à East Chisenbury.
