Supervisor: Brad Vice, Ph.D. The object of this undergraduate thesis is to map the development of sequential art, comics, in the form of respectable art form influencing contemporary other artistic areas. Modern comics were developed between the World Wars primarily in the United States of America and therefore became a typical part of American culture. The thesis is divided into three major parts. The first part called Sequential Art as a Medium discusses in brief the history of sequential art, which dates back to ancient world. The chapter continues with two sections analyzing the comic medium from the theoretical point of view. The second part inquires the origin of the comic book industry, its cultural environment, and consequently the birth of modern comic book. -

TEEN AGE -A Construção Da Narrativa Gráfica a Partir Da Autobiografia
Growing up with Vertigo: British Writers, Dc, and the Maturation of American Comic Books

Salisbury to The Faculty of the Graduate College of The University of Vermont In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Specializing in History May, 2013 Accepted by the Faculty of the Graduate College, The University of Vermont, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts, specializing in History. Thesis Examination Committee: ______________________________________ Advisor Abigail McGowan, Ph.D ______________________________________ Melanie Gustafson, Ph.D ______________________________________ Chairperson Elizabeth Fenton, Ph.D ______________________________________ Dean, Graduate College Domenico Grasso, Ph.D March 22, 2013 Abstract At just under thirty years the serious academic study of American comic books is relatively young. Over the course of three decades most historians familiar with the medium have recognized that American comics, since becoming a mass-cultural product in 1939, have matured beyond their humble beginnings as a monthly publication for children. However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC. -

Homegrown: Austin Music Posters 1967 to 1982
Homegrown: Austin Music Posters 1967 to 1982 Alan Schaefer The opening of the Vulcan Gas Company in 1967 marked a significant turning point in the history of music, art, and underground culture in Austin, Texas. Modeled after the psychedelic ballrooms of San Francisco, the Vulcan Gas Company presented the best of local and national psychedelic rock and roll as well as the kings and queens of the blues. The primary 46 medium for advertising performances at the 47 venue was the poster, though these posters were not simple examples of commercial art with stock publicity photos and redundant designs. The Vulcan Gas Company posters — a radical body of work drawing from psychedelia, surrealism, art nouveau, old west motifs, and portraiture — established a blueprint for the modern concert poster and helped articulate the visual language of Austin’s emerging underground scenes. The Vulcan Gas Company closed its doors in the spring of 1970, but a new decade witnessed the rapid development of Austin’s music scene and the posters that promoted it. Austin’s music poster artists offered a visual narrative of the music and culture of the city, and a substantial collection of these posters has found a home at the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University. The Wittliff Collections presented Homegrown: Austin Music Posters 1967 to 1982 in its gallery in the Alkek Library in 2015. The exhibition was curated by Katie Salzmann, lead archivist at the Wittliff Collections, and Alan Schaefer, a lecturer in the Department of English Jim Franklin. Neal Adams was robbed of a briefcase on the subway recently. The briefcase contained a great deal of art in various stages, including breakdowns and finished art for Marvel and DC and a model for the ACBA membership card., Adams has frequently been late getting his work in and this has caused him to miss several already-extended deadlines. He may lose several jobs as a result. Green Lantern/Green Arrow 87 will be all reprint as a result. Gil Kane will do an origin issue of Ka-Zar and then John Buscema will take over. There apparently will be at least 4 Blackmark books by Gil Kane from Bantam, vzith the first one due to be reissued with a new cover. -
