He studied double bass at the Prague Conservatory with Josef Hrabe and also received lessons in theory from Johann Friedrich Kittl and August Wilhelm Ambros. He became a double bassist for the Court Orchestra at Stuttgart and later was appointed Kapellmeister. He composed orchestral and chamber works as well as lieder and several successful operas. The son of a diplomat, he spent his early years in Istanbul before going to Vienna to study music with Joseph Mayseder for violin and with Hoffmann for composition. He then toured Europe as a violinist. He later returned to Istanbul where he played the violin before the Sultan to whom he dedicated this Symphony. He mostly composed operas, chamber, instrumental and vocal works.

August 1994, Salzburg, Großer Saal des Mozarteums - Salzburger Festspiele Paul Gulda (Klavier), Hagen-Quartett ZUM WERK: Die konzeptionelle Idee besteht im Erwirken höchstmöglicher Gegensätzlichkeiten innerhalb von vier Satzteilen, wobei eine Intervallkonstruktion in freier Handhabung die „innere“ Verklammerung herzu- stellen hat. Das Notenbild liefert diesbezüglich „rein optisch“ erste Auskunft, das Klangergebnis soll akustisch dieses formbildende Wollen weitergeben. Hörzwänge, wie sie heute gerne durch mehr oder weniger geglückte „poetische Ausdrucksbezeichnungen“ oder gar „Programme“ beliebt sind, fehlen. Auch Richtlinien, Direktiven oder emotionale Bedrängung durch Satztitel gibt es nicht; die Empfindun- gen und geistig- bzw. musikalisch-bildlichen Vorstellungen soll der Zuhörer und Interpret selbst durch nachschöpferisches Wollen erleben. Einige „Randbemerkungen“ zu Form und Inhalt: Anfang und dritter Teil sind in lyrisch-ruhig-sanftmüti- gem Duktus erdacht, trotzdem sehr konträr, eigenwillig in den flexiblen Schichten und Linienzügen, und es soll bei der Reflexion ein gewisser imaginärer Schwebezustand ausgelöst werden, als Indiz für bewegende Seelenbekenntnisse. Die Sätze 2 und 4 wiederum setzen sich gewaltig ab. Durch eine stürmisch-variable Metrik-Motorik wird merkbar das thematisch lineare Material bloßgelegt, wobei teilweise schlagzeugartige Attacken des Klaviers die Metrikgliederung vorwärtstreibt. Im Schlußsatz ist das Repetitionsprinzip in den Streichern vorrangig, das Klavier kontrapunktiert fast ausschließlich durch zerlegte Klangpassagen. Immer mehr wird das Tonrepetitionsprinzip der Streicher „gebrochen“, wobei in der Schlußstretta durch die „accell. ad libitum“-Anweisung ein „Chaos“ heraufbeschworen wird, das schlußendlich plötzlich abbricht.
