DOCUMENT RESUME ED 292 153 CS 506 070 AUTHOR Burns, Gary TITLE The Bosstown Sound. PUB DATE Mar 88 NOTE 39p.; Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Culture Association (10th, New Orleans, LA, March 23-26, 1988). PUB TYPE Viewpoints (120) -- Speeches/Conference Papers (150) EDRS PRICE MF01/PCO2 Plus Postage. DESCRIPTORS *Bands (Music); Content Analysis; Discographies; *Music; Musicians; *Popular Culture IDENTIFIERS Media History; Music Ensembles; *Rock and Roll; *Rock Music ABSTRACT Based on the argument that (contrary to critical opinion) the musicians in the various bands associated with Bosstown Sound were indeed talented, cohesive individuals and that the bands' lack of renown was partially a result of ill-treatment by record companies and the press, this paper traces the development of the Bosstown Sound from its beginnings in the nightclubs of Boston in 1967 to its end in 1969. In addition, the paper provides complete discographies, including critical commentary, of records produced by bands associated with the Bosstown Sound. The bands of the Bosstown Sound include: The Apple Pie Motherhood Band, The Bagatelle, The Beacon Street Union, Bo Grumpus, Eagle, Earth Opera, Eden's Children, Sure Looks Real, The Ill Wind, Jolliver Arkansaw, Orpheus, Phluph, Puff, and Ultimate Spinach. Issue 142 AUGUST 2ND, 2021 Is there a reader among us who doesn’t dig ZZ Top? We mourn the passing of Joseph Michael “Dusty” Hill (72), bassist, vocalist and keyboardist for the tres hombres. Blending blues, boogie, bone-crushing rock, born-for-MTV visuals, humor and outrageousness – they once took a passel of live animals on stage as part of their 1976 – 1977 Worldwide Texas Tour – Hill, drummer Frank Beard and guitarist Billy F. Gibbons have scorched stages worldwide. As a friend said, “it’s amazing how just three guys could make that much sound.” Rest in peace, Mr. Hill. In this issue: Anne E. Johnson gets inspired by the music of Renaissance composer William Byrd, and understands The Animals. Wayne Robins reviews Native Sons, the superb new album from Los Lobos. Ray Chelstowski interviews The Immediate Family, featuring studio legends Waddy Wachtel, Lee Sklar, Russ Kunkel and others, in an exclusive video interview. I offer up more confessions of a record collector. Tom Gibbs finds much to like in some new SACD discs. John Seetoo winds up his coverage of the Audio Engineering Society’s Spring 2021 AES show. Ken Sander travels through an alternate California reality. WL Woodward continues his series on troubadour Tom Waits. Russ Welton interviews cellist Jo Quail, who takes a unique approach to the instrument. In another article, he ponders what's needed for sustaining creativity. Adrian Wu looks at more of his favorite analog recordings. Cliff Chenfeld turns us on to some outstanding new music in his latest Be Here Now column.

THE CIVICS OF ROCK: SIXTIES COUNTERCULTURAL MUSIC AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE PUBLIC SPHERE by Michael Jacob Kramer A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History. Chapel Hill 2006 Approved by Advisor: John F. Kasson Reader: Robert Cantwell Reader: Peter Filene Reader: Lawrence Grossberg Reader: Jacquelyn Hall © 2006 Michael Jacob Kramer ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT MICHAEL KRAMER: The Civics of Rock: Sixties Countercultural Music and the Transformation of the Public Sphere (Under the direction of Professor John F. Kasson) For the counterculture of the 1960s and 70s, rock music was not only mass entertainment, but also a form of public life. While many scholars have argued that rock was incompatible with civic participation, this book claims that in music scenes such as San Francisco, in poster art and dancing, on the radio and in print publications, rock served as a flash point for dilemmas of citizenship and civil society. As frequently as it deteriorated into escapism and hedonism, rock also created an atmosphere of inquiry in which the young might listen, think, move, and feel their way through issues of public and civic interaction, such as identity, belonging, power, and democracy. Even when exported by the American military to Vietnam or when circulating to youth movements worldwide, far from eclipsing public life, rock music transformed it into a mass-mediated mode of association
