From the Desk of the GM

Last night was an important night in the Fleet calendar – our AGM was held at the ANMM and attended by almost 100 of our members. This was a great turnout! The four main topics of discussion were the Strategic Plan 2014, future funding, marketing and Fleet communications. The first three are inexplicably linked, have more of an external focus and with adoption of the Strategic Plan, can now be progressed. There is much work to be done with these. The fourth is an internal issue and one which I believed had been markedly improved with the introduction of this weekly Fleet Forum in March 2012. It was a lively meeting but it is always important to the Board that our members feel that they are being heard. It was good to hear some of the areas in which we could improve. Thank you to everyone who attended.

Congratulations to our three new Directors - Andrew Ross, Steve Clifford and Phil Nott. Congratulations also to Martyn Low who was awarded an Honorary Life Membership, Allan Kilby as the inaugural recipient of The George Cook Shield and Jim Fitzpatrick who was awarded The Albert Cup.

In discussion with a number of Fleet Directors since the AGM, the concept of quarterly member’s meetings had been raised and we will pursue this idea. These would provide a valuable and much needed platform for discussion.

Great news to share regarding our 2015 James Craig voyage to Hobart! With formal Board approval given last week for James Craig to sail to Hobart in January/February next year, our selling of passenger places commenced. Before bookings opened, we had a list of 30 people who had already expressed interest in this trip. With this list and no paid advertising, we are proud to report that there are now 21 out of 24 passenger tickets confirmed. Congratulations team!

Volunteers seeing to Berrima 's every need

A little bit of scraping, a little bit of sanding for the hull. With the Everduer applied on the topsides and undercoat/primer yesterday, Berrima is now ready to receive her topcoat, probably today! What a great effort from Noakes and our volunteers!

And Berrima is no food for Teredo worm, which needed to be removed (evidence) from within the timber!

The work list is long and we know Berrima is in good hands!

Musing from Martyn (not anymore minute*)

Summers Daze

It is a summer ritual that when the temperature rises and the sun shines people head for the beach. They shovel and play with sand, get gritty bits in places that are not mentioned in polite company,

https://untrusted-app.verticalresponse.com/tmp_storage_proxy/vm-app08.sf/untrusted/9... 9/12/2014 SHF's Fleet Forum Page 3 of 5

they get scorched by the sun and go home exhausted saying what a great time they had. On Sunday, Phil & Lindsay followed this tradition with a few minor differences. On the Waratah, they shoveled coal, got the gritty bits, were scorched by the furnace and tried to tell us that they enjoyed themselves. Pull the other one guys!

Yours Traditionally Martyn

*Following one of our member's feedback regarding the last Fleet Forum newsletter, we needed to change the heading of this post. Here is an extract of Peter Morton's email: "Martyn is a shy and somewhat self-effacing chap, which is why I write on his behalf, and whilst perhaps a bit vertically challenged, he is certainly not minute. He is in reality a GIANT of a man amongst engineers (and even amongst certain deck crew).

Maybe it could be called “Musings from Martyn – my travels with Gulliver inside a boiler” – but don’t call him minute."

Speakers Bureau, talks in Scotland and England by Jon Simpson to the volunteers and members of the Clyde Maritime Trust on the 27 August 2014, aboard Glenlee . The Riverside Museum is a new museum that opened in 2011 and displays many of the transport artefacts from the older Kelvin Hall Museum. The relationship between the Clyde Maritime Trust and the Riverside Museum is similar to the relationship between the ANMM and SHF.

The talk on the restoration of James Craig and John Oxley was well received by over 35 Trust volunteers and staff and questions went on for well over an hour. To read more about it, click on the following link .
