My aim was to attempt to ‘get inside the head of an artist whilst he painted’. This was a fascinating experience, where I could almost feel the paint being applied and the creative emotion flowing onto his canvas. Martin is a brilliant artist – in this work he painted a section of the hull of the partially restored SS John Oxley, calling it Peeling Away Time.

Please take time to read these amendments set out below. An amended copy of the Plan has been placed on our website in the Members’ area. Please note that your Board recently adopted a Collections Policy and this also is now available for reading on the website. One of our Rozelle Bay neighbours, Waterway Constructions, has taken the initiative of holding an open day for local residents to showcase the activities of organisations that operate along its foreshores. “A Day on the Working Bay” is planned for Nov 15 and we will have our Rozelle site open for visitors to see what it is we do there. A great opportunity for us to embark on some locally focused PR.

    Victorian Heritage Database place details - 28/9/2021 POLLY WOODSIDE Location: 1-23 SOUTH WHARF PROMENADE SOUTH WHARF, MELBOURNE CITY Victorian Heritage Register (VHR) Number: H2116 Listing Authority: VHR Extent of Registration: All of the iron hulled barque known as the Polly Woodside. 1 Statement of Significance: The Polly Woodside was built in Belfast in 1885 by Workman Clark & Co Ltd for William J Woodside, and operated as a cargo vessel, initially carrying coal, nitrate and wheat between England and South America, and also visiting North America, Africa and Australia (Newcastle, N S W). In 1904 the ship was sold to a New Zealand company and renamed Rona (a Maori name) and until 1921 sailed mainly between various ports in Australia and New Zealand. In 1923 it was dismantled to become a coal hulk, and towed to Melbourne. The ship was temporarily requisitioned by the Royal Australian Navy during the Second World War, and used in New Guinea as a refuelling barge for navy ships, then returned to being a coal hulk in Melbourne. In 1968 the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) purchased the ship for one cent. It underwent extensive restoration, most of which was done by volunteers, and in 1978 was opened to the public, moored permanently at the 1875 Duke's & Orr's Dry Dock at Southbank. In 1988 the Polly Woodside was awarded the World Ship Trust Medal for supreme achievement in the preservation of maritime heritage. The Polly Woodside is a three-masted iron barque with a clipper bow and rounded counter-stern. The hull is of riveted wrought iron, with clinker built (raised and sunken) plates.

    2020 2021 Maritime Romanticism Created by Jake Tedesco January, 2021 Motivation Inspired by the artwork of Ivan Aivazovsky, students will be introduced to his maritime painting and the Romantic movement in art. In this project, students will draw a sailing ship, by following step-by- step instructions to create a vessel much like those that made the great oceans passable for exploration, transportation, and trade. In order to intensify the drawing composition, students will apply color by layering transparent washes of watercolor paints. Student Objectives • Introduce students to the marine art of Russian artist Ivan Aivazovsky. • Learn about the Romantic art movement. • Demonstrate skill in use of tools and process: pencil drawing and painting with watercolors. Historical and Cultural Connections The Romantic movement (or Romanticism) was an artistic, intellectual, and literary movement that spread throughout Europe at the end of the 18th century and was in its height during the mid 1800’s. It was considered a direct response to the Industrial Revolution. The movement focused on intense emotion as a source of inspiration. During this time, water was “left to speak for itself; the weather would play a huge part in what emotions were experienced from viewing a painting. “ For example, the sea could be depicted in many different ways. It could be painted as rough, stormy, dark, or calm, etc. Each of these evoking a different viewer experience. Ivan Aviazovsky (1817-1900) was a Romantic painter considered one of the greatest Marine artists in history. Born to an Armenian family living on the Black Sea, he later traveled to Europe.

Landscape photographs typically capture the presence of nature but can also focus on man-made features or disturbances of landscapes. A seascape is a photograph that depicts the sea, or an example of marine art. The word has also come to mean a view of the sea itself, and when applied in geographical context, refers to locations possessing a good view of the sea. A cityscape is a city viewed as a scene; an artistic representation of a city; an urban environment. A cityscape (urban landscape) is a photograph of the physical aspects of a city or urban area. It is the urban equivalent of a landscape. Townscape is roughly synonymous with cityscape, and it implies the same difference in size and density implicit in the difference between the words city and town. SL Still Life Still life photography is the depiction of inanimate subject matter, most typically a small grouping of objects. Still life photography, more so than other types of photography, such as landscape or portraiture, gives the photographer more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition. Still life photography is a demanding art, one in which the photographers are expected to be able to form their work with a refined sense of lighting, coupled with compositional skills. The still life photographer makes pictures rather than takes them. PO Portrait Portrait photography or portraiture in photography is a photograph of a person or group of people that captures the personality of the subject by using effective lighting, backdrops, and poses.
