Rich in motorsport history, where design and beauty are so important, Monaco is the perfect backdrop for a futuristic reboot of a racing classic – the Renault Alpine 110, celebrating its 50 th Anniversary with a new concept car...

01.40 ITV Alain Prost (in French) It speaks to all motorsport fans, especially in this generation that has been seduced by this Alpine which is magic by its design, its style and also by the performances of well-known French drivers in rally. Myself, I remember, I went to see the Monte-Carlo stages in the region of Chambery. It’s true the Berlinette is still a legendary car, as there are few. The proof with this concept is that, since it was announced, everyone is talking about the rebirth of the Alpine brand.

A guide to racing the Monaco Circuit

02.59 VO

Championship leader, Robin Frijns, has a guide to this famous street circuit ITV Robin Frijns #4 (NED) Fortec Motosports (In English) You arrive at St Devote first corner around 200 – 220kph you have to hit the kerb or else you go wide on the exit and hit the wall as the walls are very close here. The exit is very important because it goes up and you need the speed. Corner 3 is a long left-hander. If you are flying you have understeer and you smash into the wall.

Renault Sport Technologies Tél. : +33 (0)1 76 82 82 00 Z.A. Courtaboeuf Fax. : 33 (0)1 76 82 83 75 14, avenue des Tropiques Internet : www.renault-sport.com 03.31 Corner91 978 Courtaboeuf 4 has some Cedex - Francebanking in, so if you are in the banking you

can feel the grip and suddenly it grips the front so it’s a really nice corner. Corner 5 has a big bank in the middle of the corner which you have to get in but if you’re not in you just have no grip at all. Short hairpin... The tunnel is amazing also tricky at one point. The little chicane after the tunnel is tricky on braking because it goes down, its easy to lock a wheel... Then Tabac, another tricky corner – every corner here is tricky as the walls are there and it’s a really quick corner as well.

04.05 Then it’s Swimming Pool, also really quick but if you’re not going in like you should do, you’ll lose the rear in the middle of the corner.

Fast chicane, 4 th gear, about 180kph. Corner 15 and 16 is a very tight chicane which is hard to look for your apex and the exit is also difficult on power, the back comes out, it’s easy to hit the wall. Rascasse is also hard on braking because you turn AND brake, it’s easy to lock a wheel because the load is off the left-front. It’s first or second gear, then you go to corner 18 which is a really nice corner, you turn in, some understeer, then you go on the power then you go back off, it just snaps on the oversteer and you slightly go to the wall on the exit. Then – you just cross the line and hopefully you’re on pole!

Close Up on Jules Bianchi

04.59 VO

Coming from Nice, Jules Bianchi is practically at home this weekend for the Formula Renault 3.5 meeting in Monaco. The Frenchman knows he can count on the support of his family and fans.

05.13 Interview with Jules Bianchi (FRA) #8 (in French)

Renault Sport Technologies Tél. : +33 (0)1 76 82 82 00 Z.A. Courtaboeuf Fax. : 33 (0)1 76 82 83 75 14, avenue des Tropiques Internet : www.renault-sport.com Of91 course978 Courtaboeuf it’s Cedex always - France nice to drive in Monaco, it’s a famous track

with some great corners. It’s great to drive here. Then, as you say, I come from Nice, not far away from here. All my family will come to see me and obviously it’s pretty special to drive in front of your supporters. The pressure is always there; now of course with my family attending a meeting like this, that adds a little bit pressure but the main thing is to do a good job. That’s the focus. And I try not to put too much pressure on myself.

05.49 VO

It’s not the first time Jules races on the streets of the Principality. He has competed here the two last two years in GP2, with a podium in 2010. This experience will no doubt be useful for him for this weekend.

06.01 Interview with Jules Bianchi (FRA) #8 Tech 1 Racing (in French) Of course it’s always useful to know the track. It will be useful for me, clearly. I will be more confident during qualifying even if I couldn’t run this morning during Free Practice. I will already have my reference points but the car is different, the tyres are different, there are lots of things that are not the same between 3.5 Series and GP2.

06.20 VO

This year, he made a surprise switch to World Series by Renault from GP2 – a decision prompted by the arrival of the new Formula Renault 3.5 car which is now much closer to Formula 1.

06.35 Interview with Jules Bianchi (FRA) #8 Tech 1 Racing (in French) No, I think the 3.5 is now the direct competitor to GP2. There was no alternative. Since I run on Friday mornings in Formula 1, I couldn’t run in GP2 anymore. The 3.5 is a better car this year. It has evolved with the DRS. It has more power and more aerodynamic and mechanical grip. So I think this is a very good choice and I’m not at all disappointed with this choice.

07.00 VO

Jules Bianchi has a very busy schedule this season. Member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, he’s also the Force India’s reserve driver in and will do at least nine Friday-morning practice sessions. Is it hard to balance the two important, separate roles?

07.12 Interview with Jules Bianchi (FRA) #8 Tech 1 Racing (in French)

Renault Sport Technologies Tél. : +33 (0)1 76 82 82 00 Z.A. Courtaboeuf Fax. : 33 (0)1 76 82 83 75 14, avenue des Tropiques Internet : www.renault-sport.com No,91 978 I thinkCourtaboeuf we Cedex should - France just get things in perspective. When I’m in

Formula One, my thinking is about Formula 1 and I focus on the goal set by Force India, and here it’s different goal. I just try to keep perspective and to have two different spirits for both paddocks even if at the end it’s still racing. Formula 1 and here… it’s the same thing. So at the end of the day it’s always the same goal.

07.35 VO

By racing in Formula Renault 3.5, Jules hopes to follow Sebastian Vettel, the reigning Formula One World Champion, who gained his experience in World Series before joining Formula One

07.43 Interview with Jules Bianchi (FRA) #8 Tech 1 Racing (in French) A lot of Formula One drivers come from 3.5, and as a proof there is a World Champion who comes from here. So I think it’s a really good series.

Behind the scenes with Arden Caterham Team

08.12 VO

With cars competing in GP2 & GP3, as well as Formula 1 here in Monaco, it’s a busy weekend for the Arden Caterham team, headed up by Christian Horner’s father, Garry.

08.27 ITV GARRY HORNER (GBR) Arden Director (In English) We were interested in doing Renault World Series, Caterham were also interested. We talked to them and said why don’t we do it together and run one car apiece. There isn’t much of a link between Red Bull and Caterham. It’s just that we took a Red Bull driver - Lewis Williamson - who was with us in GP3 last year. From a team point of view it’s interesting for mechanics & engineers to interchange & experience and data.

We’ve grown our business considerably in the last 3 years. We have got quite a lot of employees. When Christian was racing, we had just a one car team, so business has grown a lot.

09.36 ITV Alexander Rossi #25 Arden/Caterham (USA) (In English) It’s a very difficult task for all the head management people of Arden, but they are 3 separate teams. I think Garry & Christian are doing a very good job. Christian’s priority is Red Bull, but Garry is overseeing all 3 teams and making sure they’re up to par and it’s a busy weekend for everyone. Everyone has the commitment and desire to win, and they’re willing to do whatever it takes. I feel completely part of the team and I have no worries they’ll be able to get everything done. I think it’s very important to make sure all the boxes are checked before you get in the car so you can focus on the job you need. And the mental capacity to drive round Monaco at pace is quite high so you need to have a clear mind and need to have your priorities in order - so to have a good support system around you is great. Arden Caterham has done a fantastic job making sure that when I get to the Pit-lane everything’s looked after and I can just do my job.

10.40 ITV GARRY HORNER He’s a very talented young driver. He’s got more experience of this because he’s done the category. It’s Lewis’s rookie season,

Renault Sport Technologies Tél. : +33 (0)1 76 82 82 00 Z.A. Courtaboeuf Fax. : 33 (0)1 76 82 83 75 14, avenue des Tropiques Internet : www.renault-sport.com 91 978 Courtaboeuf Cedex - France

he did 2 races last year, but it’s a steep learning curve. To come here for the second race, it’s not easy!

11.00 ITV Alexander Rossi #25 Arden/Caterham (USA) (In English) This is the one race where World Series runs next to Formula 1 so what better race to have! This is the true test of a driver, their ability & mental strength. We’re definitely looking for a good result this weekend.

15.30 (ROSSI celebration)

15.32 GRAPHICS – RESULT GROUP A From Group A – BIRD on pole, BIANCHI 3rd & FRIJNS 5th on grid

15.37 ITV Sam Bird #5 (GBR) ISR (In English) It was a case of trying to improve on the lap before, I knew there was a lot of improving to do still because I didn’t feel like my 23.1 was a good lap at all, so I was able to put together a much better lap with my 22.1 which still wasn’t as perfect as I’d want it, but it was enough to secure pole. It’s a very tight, twisty, narrow circuit where overtaking is genuinely extremely difficult even with DRS which World Series has this year, it’s going to prove extremely difficult to get past people. I am starting from the best position and we’ll see what happens.

16.10 GRAPHICS – RESULT GROUP B From Group B – ROSSI 2nd , MAGNUSSEN 4th on the grid

16.15 ITV Alexander Rossi #25 Arden/Caterham (USA) (In English) Obviously being on the front row of the grid at Monaco, there’s not much more you can ask for. We missed Pole by a bit, and I take my hat off to Sam he did a fantastic lap. I don’t think I could’ve found that amount of time. I think we maximised everything we had available to us, and being with a new team coming here for the first time they did an amazing job.

16.44 JINGLE – PADDOCK JOBS Close Up on Claire Magnant, DAMS team manager.

16.48 VO

The DAMS team has had a successful three years, including the Romain Grosjean’s title in GP2 Series last year. This allowed the Frenchman to go back into Formula One with Lotus-Renault this season alongside Kimi Räikkönen. Claire Magnant has been the DAMS Team Manager since 2009. It is unusual, in the somewhat chauvinist world of motorsport, that a woman has such an elevated, responsible – but Claire reached the top very quickly.

17.18 Interview with Claire Magnant (in French). I come from an engineering school, I’m an engineer. My dream was to work in motorsport, so I started as a data engineer in Formula Renault 2.0. But I thought it was a little too technical for me, it was really about data, computer, connecting the computer to the car, converting data… and I thought I would like to work instead in the team management department. I wanted to go to management school but I saw an appointment - DAMS were looking for a team co-ordinator. So I applied, I did a lot of interviews with Eric Boullier and Jean-Paul Driot, and I got the job. That lasted two years and after I was promoted as team manager in 2009.

17.55 VO

Being team manager involves supervising the daily organization of the team and the drivers. Has her gender ever been a factor?

18.06 Interview with Claire Magnant (in French) At the beginning, it was rather a disadvantage because it’s still difficult to progress when you are a woman and especially when you are young because I had just finished school and after two years of experience I was already team manager. At the beginning, it was difficult but now I have moved up and it is an advantage.

Renault Sport Technologies Tél. : +33 (0)1 76 82 82 00 Z.A. Courtaboeuf Fax. : 33 (0)1 76 82 83 75 14, avenue des Tropiques Internet : www.renault-sport.com 91 978 Courtaboeuf Cedex - France

18.23 Interview with (FRA) #28 DAMS (in French) She was very kind to me, she’s a girl it went well with her, I am very happy working with her and I hope I can carry on working with her in the future

18.34 VO

If Claire Magnant is an example for other women who want to work in important jobs with responsibilities in the motorsport world, it does not necessarily create opportunities.

18.45 Interview with Claire Magnant (in French) Not that much actually. I have the impression that women are still heading unfortunately for the press and marketing jobs and not for important jobs with responsibilities. But I’ve just had an intern who was really good, she would love to be team co-ordinator and why not team manager later. That’s what I want for her but it’s still not common. We have very few CVs for this job. We have many CVs for a mechanic or engineer job but little for the management of the team and the logistics.

19.10 VO

Until now, only one woman managed has assumed a such a key role in Formula One. This is Monisha Kaltenborn, chief executive officer of the Sauber team. Claire Magnant could soon be the second one

19.22 Interview with Claire Magnant (in French) Why not? It’s complicated because here I’m responsible for lots of things. François, the managing director, and I manage the whole organization of the team. I fear in Formula 1 the job would be very restrictive, so I don’t know. It really depends on the job but for now I enjoy working with DAMS and I want to continue learning - we have not yet learnt everything about single-seaters, and also in Endurance racing. So there is still a lot to learn.

24.16 ITV – Jules BIANCHI (in English)

I had to be really concentrated really close to the wall every time, and Sam was really quick so it was quite difficult for me to stay behind because when you are in the back you have a bit less grip but – anyway, he did a great race, I think we did a good job too because after Free Practice we were quite far away, we didn’t run at all. So I think P2 here is a good result.

24.45 ITV – Alexander ROSSI (in English)

At the beginning I was hoping to jump Sam into Turn 1 and actually ended up losing a position to Jules. It was very clear that the left side of the track was the dirty side and I just couldn’t get away as quickly. But then I figured I would just stay with them, and hopefully they would battle and such... but the pace that they had was insane, so basically I focussed on keeping my position. Kevin was a bit quicker than me through some stages of the race, but in the end it was about maintain the gap and finishing the race... and very pleased to do both!
