Specifically this study focuses on understanding changes in sediment dynamics due to renewable energy structures. Three overarching science ideas have emerged where NERC could provide a significant contribution to the knowledge base. Research into these key areas has the potential to help the UK with planning, regulation and monitoring of marine renewable installations in a sustainable way for both stakeholders and the environment. A wide ranging consultation with stakeholders was carried out encompassing regulators, developers, researchers and other marine users with a relevance to marine renewable energy and/or sediment dynamics. Based on this consultation a review of the present state of knowledge has been produced, and a relevant selection of recent and current research projects underway within the UK identified to which future NERC funded research could add value. A great deal of research has already been done by other organisations in relation to the wind sector although significant gaps remain, particularly in long term and far-field effects. -

Building on solid foundations, the company delivered improvements in its fi nancial effi ciency, in health and safety and in its customer service, positioning the organisation as one of the leaders in the UK gas industry. 4 Annual Review 2007 The company won a prestigious Utility Award for the work in delivering the new suite of computer systems which underpin daily operations. This strategy addresses Ofgem’s business plan guidance for us to provide information on our approach to enabling whole systems solutions in our RIIO-2 Business Plan. We have developed this strategy in conjunction with key whole systems stakeholders. Importantly, NGN is committed to supporting the achievement of the UK’s net zero emission targets and our Whole Systems Strategy sets out how we intend to contribute. The purpose of this document has been to assist us with: • determining our role in the whole systems landscape; • determining how we will interact with other stakeholders in the creation of an integrated energy system; and • defining the actions that we will need to take to deliver against our objectives. We also note the interactions between this document, our Environmental Action Plan, Innovation Strategy and Customers in Vulnerable Situations Strategy: • Environmental Action Plan – this is the primary regulatory document that sets out the environmental impacts of our business operations as well as short-term initiatives to reduce these impacts and our long-term strategy to contribute to the net zero emission targets by 2050, for the benefit of customers. • Innovation Strategy – this sets out our approach to delivering innovation in RIIO-2 (particularly in relation to enabling the achievement of our net zero emission targets and supporting customers in vulnerable situations), with a focus on the benefits provided to customers. -

The report presents an assessment of current academic literature and the latest industry reports to identify suitable technologies for generation of renewable energy from the Mersey Estuary, its surrounding docks and Liverpool Bay. It also contains a review of energy storage technologies that enable cost-effective use of renewable energy. The review is supplemented with case studies where technologies have been implemented elsewhere. -

Northern Powerhouse factsheet Key figures on the city regions in the Northern Powerhouse June 2015 Introduction The idea of a ‘Northern Powerhouse’ was first introduced in June 2014 by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, in a speech in Manchester. He made the case that the lack of economic and physical connections between the cities and city regions of the North of England was holding back their growth, with significant implications for the national economy. In the Chancellor’s own words: “the whole is less than the sum of its parts…so the powerhouse of London dominates more and more.” For Osborne, the solution to this challenge is the creation of a Northern Powerhouse – “not one city, but a collection of northern cities - sufficiently close to each other that combined they can take on the world.” Since the Chancellor’s initial speech, a raft of interventions have been announced to help turn the rhetoric of a Northern Powerhouse into reality – including the Greater Manchester Devolution Deal, Transport for the North, and the Northern Transport Strategy. With the creation of a Northern Powerhouse set to be a key priority for the new Government, this briefing sets out the current economic profile of the key city regions across the North and compares their performance with that of London and of the UK as a whole. This 3 year project, starting April 2017, is based on the principle of survey, test & trial necessary to secure HSE Exemption to GS(M)R and roll out the testing programme. 1.4.3. The Solution(s) it is looking to reach by applying the Method(s) The project provides a body of practical, referenceable data which is an essential pre-requisite to enable wider deployment of hydrogen and therefore delivery of cost-effective, non-disruptive carbon savings to the customer. -

PURPOSE OF REPORT 1.1 To update the Combined Authority on the work being conducted by Transport for the North, including; 1.2 An update on the work being done by both the Liverpool City Region and Transport for the North to make the case for Northern Powerhouse Rail and an enhanced High Speed 2 link to Liverpool. 2. RECOMMENDATIONS 2.1 It is recommended that the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority note the report. 3. BACKGROUND 3.1 Transport for the North and Northern Powerhouse Rail 3.1.1 Transport for the North (TfN) is the first statutory sub-national transport body in the United Kingdom, officially receiving its statutory powers on 1stApril 2018. TfN brings together 19 local transport authorities (including four Mayoral Combined Authorities and two Combined Authorities), enabling the North to speak with one voice on the transport infrastructure investment needed to deliver transformational growth and rebalance the UK economy. 3.1.2 The 2016 Northern Powerhouse Independent Economic Review (NPIER - https://www.transportforthenorth.com/wp-content/uploads/Northern- Powerhouse-Independent-Economic-Review-Executive-Summary.pdf) identified that transformed transport connectivity – both between the North‟s core cities and elsewhere across the North – would be a key enabler for transformed economic growth. 3.1.3 Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) has been identified as a key way of achieving the transformed passenger connectivity between cities, with the NPR conditional outputs emulating the levels of frequency and journey time achieved in economically successful areas elsewhere in the world.
