Very scary.” There had been whispers at home about the dangers of the revolution. Ladjevardian’s grandmother had helped women secure the right to vote and then become a member of parliament. Her father was also an MP at the time. But after that eventful day, those rumours turned into a harsh reality when her mother told her and her brother that they would go to Paris — just for a short while. “I had a really weird premonition that we were just never gonna go back,” she says. She was right. Her family spent two years in France, before moving to California to pursue the American dream. As a teenager, Ladjevardian perfected her English by watching Star Wars. Now 54, she talks to me from Houston, Texas, where in next month’s US elections she will embark on her own political quest with the Democratic party: she is campaigning to oust Dan Crenshaw, a freshman Republican in the second congressional district in Texas.

    Small Donor Public Financing Could Advance Race and Gender Equity in Congress By Nirali Vyas, Chisun Lee, and Gregory Clark PUBLISHED OCTOBER 15, 2020 Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law Introduction Voters’ demands for a more representative democracy have grown louder than ever. In 2018, they elected women and people of color to Congress in historic numbers.1 And in 2020, more women of color are running for Congress than ever before.2 This progress deserves applause, especially considering the longstanding barriers women and people of color face as candidates in raising the funds to compete. These barriers help explain why, even with the gains of 2018, these groups continue to be significantly underrepresented among congressional candidates. The problem is most acute for women of color. Over the past four general elections for the U.S. House of Representatives, women of color raised less on average than all other candidates, relied more on small donations than their white and/or male opponents, and made up only 4 percent of candidates even though they constitute nearly 25 percent of the country’s population, this analysis finds.3 (While complete data for 2020 are not yet available, they are not expected significantly to change these findings.4) “It’s really hard for women to run,” Veronica Escobar, a Latina House member elected in 2018, told the Texas Tribune. “And I think it’s even harder for women of color because fundraising is really such a huge component of running in a congressional race and many of us have limited networks.”5 This study shows that a small donation-matching public financing program could help minimize the disadvantages faced by women of color running for office — and enable all candidates to focus more on constituents and less on large donors while still raising competitive sums.

    CANDIDATE SPOTLIGHT June 2020 New Mexico Primary Summary Texas Primary Recap Gina Ortiz Jones As past Rivera Consulting, Inc. analysis has shown, college-educated voters have been highly motivated throughout the Democratic primary cycle, accounting for record turnout across several demographically distinct states. While vote share for people of color has primarily remained static or slightly below average, this environment presents a distinct opportunity to boost the political power of regions, districts, and communities that will benefit from motivated college-educated Democratic turnout. For the remainder of this year, Maria’s List will continue its strategy of funding the Southern progressive candidates and movement organizations that will deliver the turnout needed to elect Democrats to the White House, Congress, and state legislatures in November. Based on our deep democracy 2.0 research findings, the focus for the General election will be the following top five deep democracy states - Arizona, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Texas. By identifying congressional districts and county-level down-ballot races within these targeted states, progressive donors will be better able to intentionally boost turnout amongst people of color while benefiting from self-motivated college-educated voters in the 2020 cycle.
