Universidade do Porto. Universidade do Porto. • Exploring Representations of Early Modern German Women Book Collectors (1650-1780)
CURATING THE COLLECTOR: EXPLORING REPRESENTATIONS OF EARLY MODERN GERMAN WOMEN BOOK COLLECTORS (1650-1780) BY KATHLEEN MARIE SMITH DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in German in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Mara R. Wade, Chair Associate Professor Laurie Johnson Associate Professor Stephanie Hilger Professor Carl Niekerk Professor Tom D. Kilton, Emeritus ABSTRACT This dissertation examines representations of book collecting by German women in the early modern period in order to explore the role of gender in this activity. Portrayals of book collectors in the modern and early modern eras offer examples of how this identity is constructed, particularly in the underlying assumptions and expectations that determine who is defined as a book collector and what criteria are used to shape that decision. In the case of four early modern women--Elisabeth Sophie Marie of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (1683-1767); Elisabeth Ernestine Antonie of Sachsen-Meiningen (1681-1766); Caroline of Ansbach (1683- 1737); and Wilhelmine of Bayreuth (1709-1758)--the act of collecting is depicted as essential to their social status and an integral part of their lives. Finally, in an in-depth case study of an early modern German woman who was a book collector, Sophie of Hanover (1630-1714), this study analyzes how she represented her collecting activities and textual interaction as well as how she is represented in other texts. The way in which these early modern German women were represented and represented themselves as collectors reveals a great deal about the position of women within wider networks concerning the exchange of texts and information.

  • Juan Garaizabal. Memorias Urbanas
Juan Garaizabal. Memorias Urbanas Juan Garaizabal (born in 1971 in Madrid) is a conceptual artist specialized in the creation and transformation of interactive spaces as a means of artistic communication. He has experimented throughout his creative career with different areas. An inventor and a trained draughtsman with a degree in management, in the 1990’s he began to turn garages, warehouses, bunkers, and such into lofts, when no such concept existed in Spain. To furnish them, he enlarged the format of his drawings and installations. This process of gradual enlargement –still in progress– led him to unveil his first monumental public work in 2005 : he conceived as a curator a humanizing settlement of the landscapeby means of an outdoor installation, using grand format fixtures. This gave way to a conceptual installation which would intervene in important public spaces. In 2006 he finished his first solo conceptual art piece “Bosque de Flores”, a garden of giant flowers that was installed in the city of Valencia for the America’s Cup. The installation continues to illuminate the City of the Porcelain every night. In 2008 he was hired by the Municippyality of Bucharest to create the full ppjroject of their “White Night”/ “Noaptea Alba”. It was then when he developed the idea of Memoria Urbana (urban memory), the central theme of his present work. The Memoria Urbana projects focus on recovering and giving worth to architecture elements or historical buildings that have been lost in the course of time. Among these are an outline of the Old City of Bucharest, the Royal Palace of Valencia, the Bohemian Church of Bethlehem in Berlin, the Palais des Tuileries in Paris, Old London Bridge or Paço da Ribeira in Lisbon.

  • Representation and the Recurring Past in Post-Unification Berlin
CONJURED SPACES: REPRESENTATION AND THE RECURRING PAST IN POST-UNIFICATION BERLIN by KIMBERLY JEAN PHILLIPS B.A. (Hons.), The University of Victoria, 1997 M. A., The University of British Columbia, 2000 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Fine Arts) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA September 2007 © Kimberly Jean Phillips, 2007 11 ABSTRACT Behind the mask of new architecture rapidly transforming Berlin's visage in the years following Germany's reunification in 1990 lie profound anxieties over the nature and implications of the city's reconstruction in the face of an irresolvable past and an unclear future. A disenchanted and destabilized eastern population, resurfacing questions over the definition of "Germanness" and the German nation, and the sudden collision of two very different official narratives of the National Socialist and communist pasts frustrate the city's desire to present a unified identity in the first years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. To access this difficult terrain, my dissertation departs markedly from the focus of much of the published literature on the post-unification city and looks not to Berlin's new building projects themselves but rather to the more unstable spaces between architecture: those more marginal or unresolved sites and surfaces which, in states of flux, paralysis, or neglect, are more vulnerable to (and revealing of) the possibilities of appropriation and disturbance. This study considers three temporary, site-specific installations that for brief moments haunted such sites in Berlin during the first volatile years after 1990: Shimon Attie's 1991-1992 photographic projections entitled The Writing on the Wall, the 1993 simulation in canvas of Berlin's demolished Stadtschloss, and Christo and Jeanne- Claude's famed wrapping of the Reichstag in 1995.

  • Urban Memory and Visual Culture in Berlin Framing the Asynchronous City, 1957-2012
CITIES AND CULTURES CITIES AND CULTURES As places of turbulence and transformation, cities are sites of forgetting. Simon Ward And yet archiving and exhibiting the presence of the past remains a key cultural, political and economic activity in many urban environments, such as Berlin. This book examines the crucial role of visual culture (architecture, memorials, photography and film) in shaping Berlin’s urban memory culture in both East and West in response to the changing political, social and economic organization of the built environment over the past five decades. This memory culture continues to generate critical encounters in a global city whose spatial and temporal boundaries have disintegrated. Through these encounters, we, as denizens of a globalized world, might remember how place can be remembered.
