Santrauka. Nuo 2015 m. rugsėjo 1 d. įsigaliojo Danijos pilietybės įstatymo pataisos, lei džiančios turėti ir kitą pilietybę be Danijos pilietybės. • “The Wisest Radical of All”: Reelection (September-November, 1864)
Chapter Thirty-four “The Wisest Radical of All”: Reelection (September-November, 1864) The political tide began turning on August 29 when the Democratic national convention met in Chicago, where Peace Democrats were unwilling to remain in the background. Lincoln had accurately predicted that the delegates “must nominate a Peace Democrat on a war platform, or a War Democrat on a peace platform; and I personally can’t say that I care much which they do.”1 The convention took the latter course, nominating George McClellan for president and adopting a platform which declared the war “four years of failure” and demanded that “immediate efforts be made for a cessation of hostilities, with a view to an ultimate convention of the states, or other peaceable means, to the end that, at the earliest practicable moment, peace may be restored on the basis of the Federal Union of the States.” This “peace plank,” the handiwork of Clement L. Vallandigham, implicitly rejected Lincoln’s Niagara Manifesto; the Democrats would require only union as a condition for peace, whereas the Republicans insisted on union and emancipation. The platform also called for the restoration of “the rights of the States 1 Noah Brooks, Washington, D.C., in Lincoln’s Time, ed. Herbert Mitgang (1895; Chicago: Quadrangle Books, 1971), 164. 3726 Michael Burlingame – Abraham Lincoln: A Life – Vol. 2, Chapter 34 unimpaired,” which implied the preservation of slavery.2 As McClellan’s running mate, the delegates chose Ohio Congressman George Pendleton, a thoroughgoing opponent of the war who had voted against supplies for the army. As the nation waited day after day to see how McClellan would react, Lincoln wittily opined that Little Mac “must be intrenching.” More seriously, he added that the general “doesn’t know yet whether he will accept or decline.

XX a. Atsisakant itin gausios istoriografijos nuoseklaus vardijimo, straipsnyje mėginama „atrinkti ir suverti“ įvairių šalių diplomatų biografijas vienijančius segmentus: „eseistas“, „no velistas“, „rašytojas“, „poetas“, vertėjas“, „Nobelio premijos nominantas“, „Nobelio premijos laureatas“. Toks „vėrinys“ suteikia daug daugiau spalvų stereotipiniam diplomatų paveikslui, kartu jie – ne tik oficialūs atstovai bei kūrėjai, savo tautos kultūros puoselėtojai ir skleidėjai, bet ir pasaulinės kultūros aukso fondo pasididžiavimas. Renard The selection and preparation of white officers for the command of black troops in the American Civil War: A study of the 41st and 100th U.S. Colored Infantry Paul D. Renard ABSTRACT American Civil War officer preparation activities were rooted in the broader practices of antebellum military education as applied at West Point, other military academies, and the state militia system. The arrival of black troops in the Union Army led to a radical, if temporary, transformation in the Army’s process for the selection and preparation of officers—but only for the white officers who served with black regiments. Overtly political or casual processes of the early Civil War were replaced in many cases by formal examinations and the centralized review of results, operating in parallel with more traditional political patronage systems of appointment. This study uses the experiences of officers from several black infantry regiments, and particularly the 41st U.S.

  • In Quest of the Main Currents of Pennsylvania Literature*
IN QUEST OF THE MAIN CURRENTS OF PENNSYLVANIA LITERATURE* By E. GORDON ALDERFER IT WOULD be a mistake, in drawing the bounds for a study of Pennsylvania literature, to limit it too severely either to the so-called creative genres and formal modes of literary expression or to those writers whose lives were largely spent within our political boundaries. Certainly the private letters of James Logan to Thomas Story, for example, have the depth and dignity to warrant their inclusion, as do the choicest public papers of James Buchanan or numerous examples of private diaries. And as far as personalities are concerned, Philip Freneau, Edgar Allan Poe, John Greenleaf Whittier, Bronson Alcott, Walt Whitman and others were hardly more than transients in Pennsylvania, but they contributed to the collective force of Pennsylvania's creative history. What we are really seeking here is more than a mere chronicle of names, works and dates. The subject matter involves more than a museum collection of scientifically measurable objects. Here we are tangling with forces out of which the measurable history of events evolves, and those events in turn cast their spell on the spirit of man and stir up new impulses and ideas. A thrust-and- balance, charge-and-countercharge movement. To mirror this spirit- ual evolution, the changing shadows of man's mind, no pat critical formula will suffice. Admittedly, sheer instinct must play a large part in the process- not only in drawing the boundaries of the study, but in evaluating and interpreting its substance. Those of us who know Pennsylvania *In part the substance of this paper was included in the author's remarks in a panel discussion on "Pennsylvania's Contribution to the Arts" at the meeting of the Pennsylvania Historical Association at Carlisle, October 22, 1949.

OLDROYD ACKNOWLEDGMENT Editor is most grateful to the various authors who THEhave willingly given their consent to the use of their respective poems in the compilation of this volume. It has been a somewhat difficult problem, not only to select the more appropriate productions, but also to find the names of their authors, for in his Lincoln collection there are many hundreds of poems which have appeared from time to time in magazines, newspapers and other productions, some of which are accom panied by more than one name as author of the same poem. In a number of instances it has been difficult to ascertain the name of the actual owner of the copyright, the poems having been printed in so many forms without the copyright mark attached. The Editor in particular extends his grateful acknowledg ment to the Houghton Mifflin Company for permission to reprint the "Emancipation Group" by John G.
