Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) Perhaps the greatest and most famous portrait painter of all time, Rembrandt van Rijn was a master of observation, chiaroscuro and, perhaps most importantly, brutal honesty, as seen in his most famous works, the self-portraits. Critics and scholars disagree over how many he undertook, but whatever the actual number, it is a staggering collection including approximately 45 paintings, 30 etchings and seven drawings. These depict the ravages of time on the artist’s face without any sense of vanity, and are heartbreaking if seen in succession. His Biblical scenes and etchings are also superb, but it is those portraits that are his legacy. Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) Virtually ignored in his own time, Vermeer is now truly considered an Old Master. Like many from the Golden Age of Dutch Painting, Vermeer’s fascination was light, and the faithful and beautiful reproduction of it on canvas. This can best be seen on his most famous work Girl With a Pearl Earring, in which the interplay of light upon the various fabrics and the wonderful reflection shining on that pearl earring make it one of the masterpieces of western art. -

XT H E WAL LACE COLLECTION Frans Hals: The Male Portrait 22 September 2021 - 30 January 2022 #TheMalePortrait Frans Hals (c.1582/3–1666) is one of the greatest masters of the Dutch Golden Age, praised by his contemporaries for his capacity to paint lifelike portraits that seem ‘to live and breathe’. In autumn 2021, The Wallace Collection will celebrate Hals’s most famous and beloved, yet still enigmatic, painting The Laughing Cavalier (1624). The historic purchase of The Laughing Cavalier in 1865 by the 4th Marquess of Hertford (1800– 1870), the Wallace Collection’s principal founder, was instrumental in the revival of Frans Hals during the 19th century. Prior to this, Hals had been lost to obscurity. At a sale in Paris, Lord Hertford sensationally outbid Baron James de Rothschild (1792–1868) paying the astronomical sum of 51,000 francs for the picture (more than six times the estimate). The publicity around the sale led to the immediate fame of the painting and of Hals, causing prices of his works to soar. This iconic image has never been seen together with other works by the artist and will form the centrepiece of Frans Hals: The Male Portrait - the first ever show to focus solely on Hals’s portraits of men posing on their own – placing The Laughing Cavalier within the broader context of Hals’s depictions of male sitters. The exhibition will bring together over a dozen of the artist’s best male portraits from collections across the UK, Europe, and North America, making this the first major international loan exhibition at the Wallace Collection. -

Verdonck, however, is no bourgeois man, but a dolt destined for the poorhouse. We know this because of a contemporary print made after Hals’s painting, and because of the way Hals observed genre conventions of low subjects. CLEAR II Baroque and Rococo Visual Arts Packet by Jeremy Hixson 1. A lifesize peacock dominates one of these objects, which also features a dragonfly sitting on a mushroom and an owl in a cage and which was designed by James Cox. One style of these objects is the "tete de poupee", which are named for their appearance in profile and which were decorated with its creator's namesake Boulle marquetry of inlaid brass or pewter arabesques in a turtleshell veneer. JeanJacques and Philippe Caffieri did the bronze work on one of these objects housed in Versailles and designed by ClaudeSimeon Passemant; that piece is topped by a transparent globus which displays a rotating model of heavenly bodies. A painting of the "Flight into Egypt" by Francesco Trevisani appears on the front of a "nocturnal" example of these objects, which was designed by Pier Tommaso Campani for Pope Alexander VII and which uses a lamp in the back to shine through carved numbers in a rotating dial. Barend Oortkras designed the second clock mechanism and Nicolaus Derck poorly cast the second set of 38 bells, including the 7,000 pound Quint Bell, for this cathedral's carillon after the originals were destroyed in a fire in 1756. Harman van Boles designed this cathedral's large gilt spire, which dominates the skyline of the city in which this cathedral is located and which is topped by the figure of an angel holding a cross, which serves as a weathervane. -

Following the extraordinary circumstances of 2020, the Wallace Collection is delighted to announce its revised 2021 exhibitions programme, which centres on two of the Wallace Collection’s most revered paintings from the permanent collection, and masterpieces of Flemish and Dutch art - Peter Paul Rubens’s Rainbow Landscape and Frans Hals’s Laughing Cavalier. As works of exceptional international renown, these two works will, for the first time, both be seen in the broader context of their authors’ oeuvre alongside pendant and similar works. He is notable for his loose painterly brushwork, and helped introduce this lively style of painting into Dutch art. Hals was also instrumental in the evolution of 17th century group portraiture. Hals was born in 1580 or 1581, in Antwerp. Like many, Hals' family fled during the Fall of Antwerp (1584-1585) from the Spanish Netherlands to Haarlem, where he lived for the remainder of his life. -
