Ghost Stories with Randi Ewing New! ONLINE: Tuesdays, October 6–November 10, 5:30–7pm • $78 In the preface to The Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton, Wharton suggests that “there are no ghosts, but only tellers of ghost stories.” Only the writer, she says, can bring the ghost into the room. In this class, we’ll aim to conjure ghosts by becoming tellers of ghost stories. Participants will read ghost stories and examine other authors’ use of structure and frame, tension and point of view, in order to coax their own ghosts onto the page. In Short: Writing Flash Nonfictionwith Suzanne Fernandez Gray New! ONLINE: Tuesdays, September 8–29, 5:30–7pm • $52 In this class we’ll explore the merits and restraints of flash nonfiction and read examples of great work. Each session will work around a particular theme and the readings and prompts will reflect that theme. For example, we might focus on nature; activities like walking or traveling; and stories associated with objects. Students will write at least one original flash nonfiction piece to share (two if the class is very small) and get detailed feedback from the instructor and peers. During the last class, we’ll also do a quick overview of free newsletters and outlets that publish short nonfiction and discuss how micro essay techniques can apply to longer pieces. As more and more people are working to break into the freelance writing market—whether to augment their income or to replace their day job—we’ve got the real 4-1-1 on what it takes to have a successful career as a freelance writer. Come learn how to get started; where to find jobs and what kind of jobs are out there; how to pitch to magazines/newspapers and how to write a query letter; how to find sources and interview subjects, including what tools to use to document your interviews; and finally, how to get paid and take care of the business end of freelancing. Making History Read Like Fiction with Fiona Young Brown 1x class New! Writing What Is: A Writing Circle for BIPOC Womyn with LeTonia Jones & Tanya Torp New! ONLINE: Saturdays, October 3–November 7, 10am–noon • FREE The purpose of this circle is to offer a safer space for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) womyn to write and share our truths. It will also serve to build a strong BIPOC womyn’s writing community. Each session will include writing prompts, time for sharing and encouraging feedback from classmates. One week of the 6 weeks series will also feature writing instruction by a professional BIPOC womyn writer. This class is for nonfiction writers. Limit: 10 participants. Writing the Stories of Your Life with Sylvia Lovely ONLINE: Wednesdays, November 4–18, 6–7:15pm • $39 ($33 for Good Foods Co-op owners) Join Sylvia Lovely for a three-part seminar series on how to write the stories of your life. From cave wall hieroglyphics to the great literary works, we are hard-wired to describe and understand our lives and the times in which we live through stories. Some say, “I do not have a story.” Not true. Perhaps your story is about a difficult time in your life with lessons learned, maybe about a moment of triumph, how you adapted to the pandemic or are processing your role in our country’s ongoing struggle for social justice, or even simply a small act that holds significant meaning to you. In this course, participants will examine the multitude of ways in which separate poems can be connected to create an organic whole, from repeated images and phrases, to different points of view, to thematic similarities. Philomena Speaks: Contemporary Persona Poems of Monsters and Myths with Eileen Rush ONLINE: Thursdays, October 8–22, 5:30–7pm • $39 New! Voices From Home with Misty Skaggs New! Young Women Writers Project Applications available November 15 • FREE application process & program Young women in grades 9–12 are invited to apply to a series of intensive workshops focused on self-expression taught by experienced women writers.
