Submissions from those registered must be received by Monday, November 9. Receive feedback on your first page from a panel of authors, editors, and/or agents. Upon registration (which will open approximately two weeks before the event), please submit your first page (250 words/one page max; double-spaced, 12-point font; with the genre typed at the top of the page) of your work to [email protected]. Submissions will be accepted via email up until three days before the event, and pieces read at the event will be selected at random. A reader will read your piece aloud so it remains anonymous. We will get through as many submissions as possible. Time is limited. Even if we don’t read your piece, you will still benefit from listening to the feedback of others’ pieces. Through hands-on writing exercises and discussion of contemporary fiction, we will examine such nuts-and-bolts elements as voice, point of view, mood, and plot. ONLINE: Tuesdays, October 6–November 10, 5:30–7pm • $78 In the preface to The Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton, Wharton suggests that “there are no ghosts, but only tellers of ghost stories.” Only the writer, she says, can bring the ghost into the room. In this class, we’ll aim to conjure ghosts by becoming tellers of ghost stories. Participants will read ghost stories and examine other authors’ use of structure and frame, tension and point of view, in order to coax their own ghosts onto the page. The class, led by fiction writer Randi Ewing, will have a workshop component and is welcome to writers of all genres and levels.
